As someone who worked as a tech for a studio that had a G, and later on a 96 channel Duality, my advice is you don't want a console haha. A massive pain in the ass to maintain. If you really need analog, just get two or three of these.

As far as software, Alex B's Brown and Black eq's are insane, as well as his channel dynamics and buss comp. Nebula only, but worth it.

If I had a decent amount of money but had developed expensive tastes like SSL hardware, I'd get one of their little analog summing mixers, like a Big Six. 3 grand new or you could find one used for less. If 18 inputs aren't enough, I'd get a couple of 24 channel patchbays. You know what doesn't need to go direct into the board, and you do not need to spend a ton of money for extra channels for those things.

Don't they make an "E-series inspired" 19" channel strip now? There's also the 500 series modules.

I'd definetively go for a few 500 series dynamic modules (the channel ones), it's the only thing i like about SSL anyway, hardware or plugin.

SSL is great for mixing, but I track with the sound of Neve/API (mostly Nebula).

LOL don't forget aside from regular maintenance, you're also going to need to budget a rather large electrical bill every month just to power the thing, you'll likely need new AC ran in the room you're keeping it in, and the power supply rack often needs its own room and AC ventilation as well.

There's a reason 'home studios' don't have large format consoles like these installed (and the ones that do go broke fairly quickly unless you can pull in some very high paying talent)..

I prefer the sound and compressor of the 4000G but prefer the EQ of the 4000E.
