Saw the new Current update for Mac and the libraries and it made my brain go bonkers cause I don’t wanna have all that space on my internal drive eaten up, is there a way to put the Current library on an external drive so I can only install the plugin to try out and browse the new patches? I could symlink but I don’t know if a windows link would work in Mac and vice versa and I’d rather have it be plug and play like how Omnisphere or Falcon or HALion can set and see contents on external drives.

 

There is nothing a plugin can do on macOS to prevent you from using a symbolic link. Symlinks are resolved by the operating system at the filesystem level, not by the plugin itself, so the plugin has no control over whether a path is a real folder or a symlink. Unless the developer specifically writes code to reject non-default locations. Almost no-one would do that.

 

So a symlink is a symlink no matter which operating system is used? For me there’d have to be two separate links because the same potential library is going to two different folders since the location is different on Mac and windows, even if the library is actually in one same spot. Still wondering if a symlink will still work to keep from a portion up to the entire Current library on the external drive

 

Moving the Sound Library

Overview

All presets, samples, and wavetables downloaded from the Stream are stored in the “Factory” folder within Current’s application support directory. If you’re downloading a large amount of content, this folder can become quite large, so you may want to move it to an external drive or another location.

Note that no user presets or samples are stored in this folder.

Moving the factory folder

Follow these steps to store this content library in a custom location on your computer or an external drive:

1. Quit your DAW to ensure no instances of Current are running.
2. Locate the “Factory” folder at the following paths:
macOS: Mac HD/Library/Application Support/Minimal/Current
Windows: C:\ProgramData\Minimal\Current
3. Move the Factory folder to your preferred location.
4. Open Current and select “Locate.” Then, navigate to the folder’s new location.
5. Restart your DAW so the changes apply to all instances of Current.

Locating the factory folder

If the Factory folder is has been saved in multiple locations, you can choose the desired one by selecting “Locate Factory Folder” from the global settings dropdown.

I answered about MacOS. But if you intend to setup file sharing between the Mac and the PC, you just need an ethernet cable linking them. Or a network switch. When you setup the sharing, you will enter the IP address (that you assign them on your LAN like 192.168.xx.xx) in either one direction or both. It's simple.

To give you an example, my DAW Mac has all my external drives connected to it, and my win10 laptop is offline and connected via ethernet to the Mac. I have shared folders on the Mac, and the pc can go in there and access, read and write to any of those folders. This is why my Audiogridder can load any windows plugins I want, with very low latency compared to running Audiogridder so the (emulated) Windows is not also loaded onto the Mac. Giving the full CPU power/RAM of the PC to the plugins in Audiogridder which then makes them accessible in Logic.

A symlink across your network is no different than a shared folder. It's easier to do from the Mac for me, because it's unix-style command line interface in the shell. But you could do it on Windows with powershell or something, piece of cake. The sample content is loaded into RAM by the synth or sampler loading it. The only added latency is whatever it always is over the wire. But Logic detects that latency and corrects it with no user interaction anyway, like it always does. No nudge tool needed.

Yes just symlink the Current library folder to C:\ProgramData\Minimal folder

.Install Current & the library to default location = C:\ProgramData\Minimal folder

.Go to C:\ProgramData\Minimal folder then cut & paste the Current folder
to your external drive.

.Create a Symlink to C:\ProgramData\Minimal folder by doing the following -
Run cmd.exe as administrator then copy & paste the line below & press enter
mklink /d "C:\ProgramData\Minimal\Current" "F:Current"

If your external drive letter is different e.g. it's D instead of F
then just change "F:Current" above to "D:Current"

A Symlink will now be created for the Current folder on your external drive (F: )
to C:\ProgramData\Minimal folder

So Current has a more straightforward way to see its relocated library? I will try it out later
