I have yet to download a single VSL release yet. Still waiting to buy some hard drive space. My apologies for not reading the NFO… I have a hunch the Piano player will be on Santa’s sleigh.

 

I have a full Synchron Pianos Bundle, but I still haven't shared it, and it doesn't fit with the logic I used earlier: if I have something and I can share it - I share it immediately.
I'm waiting for a cracked piano player, otherwise it's impossible to intercept the license

Like many here I'm struggling for disk space. Just out of interest, and considering it may well be coming, what is the total size of that Pianos Bundle? I'd like to plan ahead

 

For the Synchron Piano Bundle, standard is 155gb and full is 349gb (according to VSL website).

 

VSL is sometimes written incorrectly due to file sizes. It is better to look at the sizes in the Vienna Assistant.

Concert D-274 - 75.18Gb,
Fazioli F308 - 104.55Gb,

The list is increasingly becoming confusing to many people. Here is my take on the VSL catalogue in easy language.
The whole VSL catalogue consist of.
1. The synchron series, which is basically their bread and butter orchestral recording done in a traditional set up in STAGE A. The prime series is basically a teaser comparable to free products of other developers. Few articulations and very basic MIC position.

The standard is actually the main library with most of the normally used playing techniques with multiple MIC positions which is considered standard among all developers, like close, decca, etc. Most of the other developers like Project SAM, Audio Imperia, MSS etc have this type of library or equivalent.

Then there is the full series with sample sets for each additional mic positions like the 3D mic etc, which may also include some exotic playing techniques. This is not generally made by most developers as 11 mic positions may not necessarily provide tangible benefit for target customers in terms of size, affordability etc.

Now the whole orchestra is recorded by VSL in this set up. Strings, Brass, Woodwinds, Percussion, Piano, Harp etc. with all playing techniques and with upto 11-12 MIC positions
Strings as ensembles, chamber sizes, sections, divisi, and solo violin, viola, cello etc. Brass too, Woodwinds, percussion and others.

Now they applied the marketing policy.
For eg. In strings from the FULL library, they took out the exotic playing techniques and gave only essential MIC positions and call it standard. Even more cut to few techniques and 2-3 MIC, prime series. Solo recordings are sold as solo instruments with same technique. Brass, woodwinds and percussion, piano etc too the same way. In brass and woodwinds, they decided to keep it as whole package, no solo marketing policy. But in percussion due to wide variety of instruments used they again went the strings way.. They sold Timpani as different package. If they used three timpani of different size or playing technique they will sell that differently too, mallets as different. They also sell other less common instruments as separate package. Most developers never do that. All in all it is to say that what Hans zimmer percussion is sold as a single package, VSL percussion is sold like solo instruments, not literally, but figuratively.

2. The BBO series is basically the same synchron orchestra recorded in only tutti, meaning large size ensembles in high and low configuration. No individual instruments, sections or divisi. Only combined patches. Since the section size is large, some MIC positions loses their necessity. Who cares about 4 far MIC positions, when a wall of sound hits. SO the size of the library becomes less, due to less MIC positions and leaving out of many playing techniques, which becomes irrelevant in large sizes and when two instruments of different timbre play simultaneously.

3. The Studio series is their old original recording, the original VSL orchestra product, recorded decades back in the Silent stage. It has a more dry sound, Which many like due to their ability to mix and layer easily with other products from other developers. The Studio series samp[les are remastered and made into products which can now run in the synchron player. So they gave it a new name, the STUDIO series.

Besides this there are some boutique and niche products like duality strings, Elite strings. Which are not new recordings. But samples taken from both new synchron and old silent stage, and packaged and promoted as a separate Novel product for varied customer taste. In duality one get both synchron strings and studio strings albeit in 50-50 size to make a complete string orchestra. The advantage is you can blend both the samples to find a deserved type of sound.

Are you sure that duality strings and elite strings are not new recordings? They should be new recordings and duality should be their flagship product at the moment

 

What I meant is not the samples from the Old library itself. Yes The recordings are done new, but whether it was done specifically for duality as claimed is too far fetched. For creating the synchron series they had multiple sessions in Stage A and for some products in Stage B too. My point is a technical one. I mean samples from synchron stage A are chopped and matched with a similar small size recording done in B. What they did in reality only, they knows for sure. If their claim is to be believed that duality is similar simultaneous recording, even then it means nothing. It only makes their editing work easier in assembling a library.
The library is not a performance. It is a chopped up, fragmented recordings, multiple RR of the same Phrase, multiple attempts of different articulations, multiple dynamic layers. Even the session may be different.
I mean every library is basically build this way, except some like those by performance samples.
Undoubtedly the product is good and the functionality is great, but to believe their claim of synergy, on face value, technically seem too improbable to be real. At most in realistic terms I would take it as small size recording done in one sessions simultaneously along with a normal large syncron stage recoding.

 

They say that the conductor, via video screen, was conducting both Stage A and B, so the performance of the players has a certain intention and consistency between the two stages. That should be the key when combining both stages.

 

Yes that might be true. But even then the final assembly of sampling set for a note has too many variations as I said earlier. Multiple RR, articulations, dynamics etc. So in a real world scenario nothing tangible is achieved from the session. Eventually both sets will be chopped up for each RR, dynamic layer and articulation. I for myself don,t attach much importance to this type of claims. If I like the ,functionality its ok. If you are a legit buyer than I would suggest that its a good buy. You don,t need Synchron PRO, if you had other string Libraries already

 

I don't compose classical music (but I use strings in my music) and I've only used Elite strings briefly and quickly compared it to Spitfire Chamber strings so I can't speak in detail about this libraries, I just wanted to ask if they were new samples or not

If someone makes a thorough list of what people do not need if they have specific versions. Looking at Synchron Strings Pro FULL, I would be amazed if there were not several other libraries that were made available that are no longer necessary.

I only suggest this because if you downloaded everything, you will have over a terabyte easily. I know some people have said something here and there, but a single list with all that are not necessary if certain libraries were already in their possession i.e.. This would be very useful.
