Can anyone explain this to me? I was wanting to try the new X-Stream, but the stand alone isn't putting out any sound. It's weird because I was like hmm wonder if UVI Falcon produces sound, it did yet nothing for Halion. I made a short video on it. I don't really understand this ASIO driver crap. I try to use FL Studio ASIO in Fl and it produces no sound, only if it's set to direct primary driver.

Availability X-Stream is available for free by registering through the Steinberg website and runs with HALion 7.1 or the free HALion Sonic 7.1 update. Source: www.steinberg.net/press/2024/x-stream/

WORKED OUT : Download and install from Download Manager
    Don’t open Cubase
Instead open Activation Manager, activate there…
    Run Cubase, works.
Just weird that it didn’t activate from within Cubase, had to close it first…

How to download correctly Steinberg's new free synth X-Stream

If you select an ASIO driver from the list, the ASIO driver should also be installed.

Perhaps the instrument is not properly activated.

Ah, good to hear it works! No sound in standalone mode? Do you really need standalone mode?

In Advanced tab you should see the IO available for that kind of ASIO drivers. If you click on control panel you can select your card. Then you can select it on the "speaker" list on the main window.

We're all getting lazier... everything's geared towards speed, always fast, fast, fast. When you mix illegal and legal products, there are almost always conflicts. They're probably like many others here, addicted to new plugins; every now and then you just need something new and fresh.

mmm i don't have FL ASIO installed, there isn't an app to select io? looks like it is using wrong outputs, many times these asio drivers select digital outputs instead of analog or headphone output if you are on a laptop.

Is FL ASIO only on the FL installer?

I have a rule of thumb for myself:
Either only cracked software or only purchased software from the same manufacturer.

Both usually lead to disaster. Have you tested whether your other Steinberg products are still working?
I only have two Steinberg products installed: Retroloque and Modell-E.

You can see it here too, listen to the one thats distorted and choppy compared to the others. It does not sound like that when it's using the FL Asio is souunds crsip and smooth. The problem is I can't get it to use FL ASIO, and when you load Asio4All v2 it crashes so I'm stuck using only the primary driver

@scguy83, you're unbelievable! I think I've told you five times already that you need a USB audio interface. It provides a high-quality driver (the interface between hardware and software) and fantastic converters. They're always much better quality than ASIO4ALL, etc.

When you get an audio interface, you install it, then select your USB audio interface in your DAW, and that's it—you won't need to change anything for life. There's only this one driver that supports your music.

What you're doing is clicking randomly and then wondering why it crackles, pops, hisses, or makes other noises.

Why do I need an audio interface – and what it really brings?

What does an audio interface actually do?

An audio interface forms the bridge between your analog sound world—such as microphones, instruments, or speakers—and the digital audio world of your computer. It performs two essential tasks: First, it converts analog signals, such as your voice or a guitar signal, into digital audio data that your software can process. Second, it significantly improves the sound quality of your recordings and playback, as it operates much more precisely and with less noise than a conventional onboard sound card.

Whether you're recording vocals, playing a keyboard, or adding sound to a YouTube video – an audio interface ensures that your audio signal is processed without loss, with rich detail, and cleanly.

Onboard sound card vs. audio interface: What are the differences?

Although modern computers come with integrated sound cards, these are designed for simple multimedia applications – not for professional music or speech productions.

Three main disadvantages are particularly significant: First, onboard sound cards often lack ASIO support, resulting in noticeable delays during recording and playback. Second, the sound quality is considerably limited, as the built-in converters usually deliver only mediocre results. Noise, low dynamic range, and a restricted frequency response are the consequences. Third, there is a lack of connectivity options – microphones, guitars, or external effects can often only be connected with additional adapters, or not at all.

Anyone who wants to do more than just make simple voice recordings will therefore eventually need an external audio interface.

    Which audio interfaces are recommended?

Choosing the right audio interface depends on your budget and intended use. For beginners up to €150, models like the Behringer UMC22 or the M-Audio M-Track Solo are recommended. Both offer ease of use, acceptable sound quality, and are well-suited for initial voice or music recordings.

In the mid-range price bracket (around €200–500), the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and the Audient iD14 are among the favorites. Both offer high-quality preamps, stable drivers, and intuitive operation. The iD14 also features a scroll control function, allowing you to adjust software parameters directly on the device.

Those with higher demands or who work professionally should opt for the top-of-the-line models. The RME Babyface Pro FS impresses with excellent converter technology, extremely low latency, and robust construction – perfect for high-quality mobile recording. The Universal Audio Apollo Twin combines high-quality sound conversion with integrated DSP processors that enable latency-free operation with UAD plug-ins – a true professional tool.
