try turning off enable monitor. you are probably monitoring the input because of that.

    no sound on Cubase playback
    - Turn off the monitor? (the little yellow speaker button)
    - Or turn off the record arm button (the red one)

    or:
Go to the top menu and click on Devices. Then click on VST Connections.
See if your audio device is showing there.

It sounds like you're experiencing an issue with playback and metronome output in Steinberg Cubase, despite the settings appearing correct and the VST responding to MIDI input. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

    1. Check Audio Interface and Output Settings:
      • Audio Device Setup: Go to Studio > Studio Setup > Audio System and ensure your audio interface is selected as the ASIO driver. If it’s set to a generic driver (e.g., Generic Low Latency ASIO Driver), switch to your interface’s specific driver.
      • Output Routing: In Studio > Audio Connections > Outputs, verify that the stereo output is correctly routed to your audio interface’s outputs (e.g., Stereo Out to your interface’s main L/R outputs). Ensure the output channels match your physical setup (e.g., speakers or headphones).
      • Sample Rate and Buffer Settings: Confirm that the sample rate in Cubase matches your audio interface’s settings (e.g., 44.1kHz or 48kHz). Mismatched sample rates can cause playback issues. Also, check the buffer size; a high buffer can introduce latency but shouldn’t mute playback.
    2. Metronome Settings:
      • Go to Transport > Metronome Setup (or press C to toggle the metronome). Ensure the Metronome Active box is checked and that the output is set to an active audio output (e.g., Stereo Out or a dedicated click output if configured).
      • Check the volume sliders for the metronome (both audio and MIDI click if used). If using an audio click, ensure the click sound file is loaded and not corrupted.
      • Test with Use MIDI Click enabled/disabled to see if one works better than the other.
    3. Track and Monitor Settings:
      • Since the channel meter isn’t moving during playback, confirm that the recorded audio or MIDI is actually present on the track. Open the event in the Sample Editor (for audio) or Key Editor (for MIDI) to verify data exists.
      • Ensure the Monitor button is enabled (orange speaker icon) and that the track is not muted or soloed incorrectly. Also, check the Inspector to ensure the track’s output is routed to the correct stereo output.
      • Verify that the VST Instrument (if used for MIDI tracks) is correctly assigned and outputting to the expected bus.
    4. Playback and Transport Issues:
      • Transport Panel: Ensure the transport is playing (press Spacebar or check the Play button). Sometimes, the playhead might be stuck or in a section with no data.
      • Check if the Cycle mode is enabled unintentionally, restricting playback to a specific loop range with no audio/MIDI data.
      • Go to Transport > Sync Setup and ensure no external sync settings are interfering (e.g., MIDI clock or timecode issues).
    5. Audio Interface and System Check:
      • Test your audio interface outside Cubase (e.g., play audio from a media player or YouTube) to confirm it’s outputting sound. If no sound, check your interface’s control panel, cables, and physical connections.
      • Restart your audio interface and computer to reset any driver glitches.
      • If using headphones, ensure they’re plugged into the correct output jack, and check the interface’s mix knob (if applicable) is set to prioritize DAW output over direct monitoring.
    6. Cubase-Specific Troubleshooting:
      • Reset Preferences: Corrupt preferences can cause issues. Close Cubase, rename the Cubase preferences folder (found in C:\Users\[YourUser]\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Cubase [version] on Windows or ~/Library/Preferences/Cubase [version] on macOS), then restart Cubase to regenerate default settings.
      • Update Drivers and Cubase: Ensure your audio interface drivers and Cubase are up to date. Check Steinberg’s website for updates or patches.
      • Test a New Project: Create a new project and record a simple audio or MIDI track to see if the issue persists. If the new project works, the issue might be project-specific (e.g., corrupted project file or routing).
    7. Common Culprits for Sudden Issues:
      • Recent Changes: Since this happened “out of the blue,” consider if you updated Cubase, your audio interface drivers, or your OS recently, as updates can introduce compatibility issues.
      • Background Processes: Ensure no other applications (e.g., Zoom, Skype, or other audio apps) are hijacking your audio interface.
      • Routing Conflicts: If you’re using complex routing (e.g., sends, groups, or external effects), simplify the project by bypassing effects or resetting the routing in Audio Connections.
    8. Further Diagnostics:
      • If the VST responds to MIDI keyboard input but playback is silent, the issue might be with the track’s playback chain rather than the input. Check the MixConsole to ensure no faders are down, and no plugins (e.g., EQ or compressor) are muting the signal.
      • If you have access to the Control Room (available in Cubase Pro), verify its settings aren’t overriding the main output.

ok,so what ive noticed is i have a 4/4 kick pattern in the previously saved track.
itst he only track i can hear output from, butthe kick is not playing back 4/4 even though its programmed at the correct places.
the first 2 play in time, the 3rd one hits off beat and the 4th one is fine
    weird

What soundcard do you use? Does it have maybe a monitor knob or something that is affecting the playback? Maybe it is turned too much on the left or right, etc.I remember having some kind of issues when i was using SSL 2+ or Audient, in my past.
