what's up guys, recently emerged some opportunities to perform live in some clubs ... that's great, except for the fact that I do not know how to play live ... I know the theory of beatmatching and stuff, just the basics ...
And as I have no money to pay a dj school I would ask for video tutorials, some e-books, tips and tricks, anything to help me learn to play live ...
is very important to me, I can not lose more opportunities ... thank you!

I have some friends who work with event promotion and know some djs and organizers, and asked one of them showed me a demo of a track, not mixed neither mastered just to get a sense of what it would sound good played on club speakers ... to my happiness, the answer was positive, he rather liked the music, just warned me to invest in some pads and ambiences in order to fill the bottom of the mix ... this happened a while ago, even i have posted a topic here of how to make "invisible pad" ...
finally, he called to warn me that if I wanted he could try to fit in at a party to see how I'd do ...
always made music for fun, only this year I decided to invest in it as a job so I need to learn to play live ...

Sounds good, I'd definetely take advantage of the opportunity and learn all you can online about the process. To dj you should keep in mind the key signatures of the track, the bpm, and find some dj software or blen manually use a wave editor daw of sorts. Never played live so can't offer to much advice. Only played at some parties. Where are you from btw?

Try downloading the "Ask Video Traktor 201" video tutorial from the Audioz website, its a pretty good one.

    Cheers!

How you choose to do it, will define you as the dj/live performing actor/artist. Just try to stay positive, have fun and to always practice. You can also practice and pretend as if you were performing at a club in front of people and record yourself mix/mixing. Through this will enable you to go listen again to your mixes and examine your strengths and weakness to help you with building your act up. :dancing:

Are you to play just original music or dj using other tracks?
The difference is going to decide what you need to learn.

We all have to start from somewhere. You'll never see a "best DJ" to be a "best DJ" since forever. Once, they were weak as well, so your point is irrelevant. What that promoter did for him is actually a kind act, giving a chance to someone who never played live before. He gave him an opportunity.
Also, take Dyro as an example, he was just a producer before and Hardwell took him under his wing and tought him how to "behave" live, but this "teaching" process didn't took them tons of years. It took him only a few hours(or maybe a few days as a max) to explain him how to use the decks live  , so don't take it so dramatically.

Everything anybody has posted is just plain wrong and very disrespectful to real D.J.s

he actually thought I was dj and was starting to produce my own music (which is most common i guess) ...

but with a good mix and some hits on your soundcloud you get several small opportunities that can become great ... it's not hard to get gigs nowadays, it's hard to stand out!

thanks bro, helped me a lot ... I searched for tutorials of traktor from groove3, sonic academy, but to no avail ... I'm downloading this one ... looks good, thank you!

Both my tracks and the tracks a want to play in my set are big room and EDM...

Neither Dyro was *no* , but he plays on EDC now (in even less than a year from when he started to actually play live)
You said about this guy "but he's not a DJ", wait, do we have to born with a pair of headphones on our ears straight from our mother's pu**y in order to be called "DJs"?
I know DJs from Australia DJing from more than 8 years in their local clubs, but they never played on the big festivals nor being famous. Even Van Der Corput(Hardwell) said about Dyro that "his productions was fresh, so i explained him the equippment telling him that he have to play live as an artist from now on" because that Dyro was just a bedroom producer before. If your music rocks, you can be even a 1 day old DJ with a pre-recorded session on a USB stick into your CDJ 900 Nexus and you can rock the ravers acting like you was DJing since forever, who cares, as long as your music rocks? There's famous producers out there which use the "DJing" term just as a rigging opportunity, while they're actually just talented producers and nothing more.

So the lesson to take away here is play what the e-tards think is flavor of the month with no real skills = mad money?
Damn, i have been doing it wrong all along!

What happens if the next guy turns a crate into aural confetti and makes you look like a jukebox?
Now that i would pay to see!

I'm still not seeing what "BS Moral" is present in wanting people to aspire to being more than the guy who presses play at the start of the set...

For the op, learn to beatmix, heads and tails at least, have a look at theory surrounding mixing in key, probably the first few times you are just going to play songs you like end to end.
If you get a real taste for it, the other things mentioned will be a basic toolbox of sorts to begin from.

They don't need to pick avici over carl cox, they can have both!
