The soundtrack of "Stray" really adds a lot to the atmosphere and immersion of the game, so I'm excited to share and discuss it here. Can't believe nobody has mentioned Outer Wilds yet. A one-of-a-kind game, with a truly stellar soundtrack that elevates the experience.

Playing this as a kid on ps1, it definitely had a different, more sombre atmosphere and it was largely due to music.

Take a listen to e.g. tracks Dimensional Temple, Creepy Caverns, Spirit Bog, or Gorgon.

 

These games soundtracks on Playstation sparked my interest in electronic music when I was a kid, like many I assume.
OST's from Megadrive (Genesis) games such as Sonic, Street of Rage 2, Shinobi 3 or Earthworm Jim where good but this was "Real" Music.

Edit : GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas on the PS2 all deserve a spot for allowing kids to discover a lot of classics.

this girl ive been dating has been playing this game a lot recently, so i cant take credit for playing it: but i keep noticing the music slaps when shes playing it. whoever they had writing the soundtrack for this went hard

those are just some but the music in this game is heat. it has a bunch of different genres too with all original music made for this game, not like a bunch of licensed tracks; its also looped and extended well in the game also. i wanted to see if anyone else posted it cause ive been vibing; but i guess ill share - the sound team of this game was cooking

 

I started playing games in 1985, lol, so tons of examples come to mind, but here are a few…

The Chaos Engine (1993) by the Bitmap Brothers. Music by Richard Joseph and others.

Jurassic Park (1994), the Amiga version, the first level specifically:

Lost Eden (1995) on the PC had some amazing Enigma-inspired ethnic tunes by the recently passed Stephané Picq. This is just one:

Command & Conquer (1995) is mostly remembered for Frank Klepacki’s industrial tunes, but he also drops a nineties club tune in ”Radio”:

…and of course anybody who played C&C Red Alert (1996), remembers ”Hell March”:

NIN / Trent Reznor’s score for Quake (1996) is pretty iconic:

And one final seni-modern example. I still can’t get over how astonishingly good Yugo Kanno’s score to Nioh (2017) is. It is so unbelievably gorgeously composed. It sounds like it’s a real orchestra too, but of course these days you can’t be sure. Just one track:

 

The Ori games are so good. Great atmosphere and music is excellent.

@naitguy Yes, "Ori and the Blind Forest" is an absolute masterpiece in terms of graphics and music.

 

@Grape Ape i used to work at a taco place where a dude would play persona songs, definitely some jams!

 

They released a enhanced version of the Heretic and Hexen games.
In this restoration you can choose the orginal midi soundtrack or the newer versions by Andrew Hulshult.
A nice edition for old boomers like me.

 

@macros mk2 yeah ive been looking into it more (she also surprised me bought me the vinyl of the soundtrack ) and apparently the Persona games are widely known for having some of the best music in gaming which i didnt know

idk if id play it personally but i like watching it, aside from the music the story is really well written too
