"Proprietary spectrum control" is just a filter applied in the signal path after the PCM oscillator - so exactly in the same way everybody else (e.g. Roland etc.) were doing this. Nothing unique here, even back in 1990. And "proprietary" means they had to write their own code (instead of using any open source code).
The 99 was the ”flagship” back then. It had better effects, more keys (76 vs 61), and a larger PCM ROM. You could also import small user samples. I remember people making some really nice user patches for it, like one famous Rhodes set. The basic technology was the same: the idea to combine samples with FM.
I've got my finger on a few SY77-85-99 in eBay but /hopefully/ this (SWAY) could turn the table @_@ BUT... I could cheaply use DEXED plus any WT VST -_-
well not so easy SY77-99 could use samples as an FM modulator as remember right in software we got only Tracktion F.'em that is more closer to SY's
Or just play this: Surge XT --> https://surge-synthesizer.github.io - Description: Semi-modular open-source synthesizer with FM engines. - Special features: Extremely flexible, combines multiple synthesis methods. - System: Windows, macOS, Linux KORG Opsix Native v1.3.1 (WiN and macOS)-R2R --> www.korg.com/us/products/software/opsix_native/ FM Synthesis Demystified // The Basics with Korg OPSIX Last edited: Jul 21, 2025 at 1:34 PM
Close but that would be a quite a bold statement. 8bit DWG's of DW8000 are pre-calculated mathematically generated waves that are used as are DCO more closer to PPG wavetables than PCM\AWM like Romplers type
Yes that would be quite a work for the developer: firstly PCM could be copyrighted, than he will have to decode the PCM part of the EPROMs because Yamaha are known to encrypt PCM part of their wavetable ROMs. As I see he is also struggling to do the EG's right, SY series had whole bunch of them, different and depending on the type of synthesis you use. Doing envelopes right is more important than being 100% closer in sound. I wish him a good luck Wavecards for these synth series are easy accessible on the net https://www.sector101.co.uk/waveblade.html interesting will this project be capable reading them Last edited: Jul 21, 2025 at 2:09 PM
Yes, Sway reads all those Yamaha waveroms, the SY77 core waves, and the Yamaha expansion cards just fine, and has done for ages. Obviously Sway can't officially bundle them for copyright reasons, but if you have them, you can use them in Sway.
Some time ago there was an attempt to mimic the complexity of SYseries synthesis in Reaktor SY-66: https://www.kvraudio.com/news/weirding-module-releases-sy66---free-fm-synthesizer-for-reaktor-19428 https://www.native-instruments.com/en/reaktor-community/reaktor-user-library/entry/show/9885/ if someone is interested in a long gone ensemble PM me. While trying remembering the name of this ensemble I found funny project made in SynthEdit: https://www.fiedler-audio.de/mf77-fm-synthesizer-mit-rcm-wavetable/ Last edited: Jul 21, 2025 at 2:32 PM
Unfortunately, he hasn't found anyone to continue the project. I advertised it years ago in the hope of finding someone to finish programming it. Here's the original text from his website! Publication At this point, I would like to expressly encourage anyone interested to contribute to the further development of the program. The sources can be found below as a ZIP file. The program is expressly released as an unfinished version under the Creative Commons CC-by-nc 3.0 license. This, of course, only applies to my part in the project. Brands and technologies such as the VST interface from Steinberg are not affected. The condition for republishing is: The synthesizer must be offered free of charge. Please mention my name as the original author and, of course, add your name as a co-author.
Saw this a while back on KVR. I think it was a passion project. Haven't heard anything since. The page looks the same, from what I remember. I see it's gone into beta. Pretty cool.
That is rather a hassle, I suppose. But, it's weird because, if memory serves, binary-dumped AWM were optionally useable if placed in a dedicated file directory within your system (I believe he said something about an Application Support/Programs Folder?). And about that website you provided; what I wonder is how that website was able to upload a track of all the AWM samples onto SoundCloud without any copyright nonsense meddling with that whole initiative. Let's just hope the internal AWM ROM dump can see the light of day considering Yamaha hasn't been all that crazy about their legacy media as far as I'm aware unlike Roland and KORG. All that being said, I'm hyped! Edit: I hadn't look hard enough, thank you @dnky. Last edited: Jul 21, 2025 at 3:59 PM
?? All these things are available already, and have been for years, including the SY77 waverom, and Sway uses it just fine, as already mentioned above. This page is linked to from the Waveblade page above: https://app.box.com/s/is32xq2gyssjs8w0wznmdo7xr17tyvh9?page=1 The SY77 waverom is on page 2 on the downloads (called "SY77 WaveROM + Drums for Waveblade.zip". All this stuff is available, and works in Sway, and other apps that read the Yamaha dump format. The only thing we don't have is an SY99 waverom dump - this will contain all the 77 stuff, but probably has extra samples.
My bad, from a more hasty glance, I presumed that only the 1st party extra ROMs were provided. Thank you very much!
Alright, now that I've got the roms in hand (thanks again dnky, heh), I've got the TG77 factory presets in that .T01, .T02, .T03 format. Seeing as though SWAY is gonna obviously go the sysex route, has anybody have an idea what to make of the preset files? I have tried to find some info on the matter, apart from strange, obscure conversion methods. The source of said factory presets here, under the factory.zip file which contains both the SY77 and TG77 factory presets, respectively. Hope this helps someone's preset expedition! There is no known software that can extract or convert the SY55’s internal ROM waveforms into SysEx dumps. Yamaha SY55 Editor and Librarian - Midi Quest for Macintosh and Windows https://squest.com/Products/MidiQuest13/Instruments/YamahaSY55/index.html SWAY SYSEX COMPATIBILITY - Sway can work with SY55/SY77/SY99 SysEx: - Load SY55/SY77/SY99 patches from SysEx dumps Sway load Yamaha SY55 SysEx dumps Yamaha-SY55_TG55-Soundbanks-Collection - Free https://dreyandersson.com/blog/yamaha-sy55-soundbanks/
AS I remind these T files are some sort of Disc Images. The Sy 77 had an internal floppy disc...me is not sure for the moment but I think there was a Software for converting them
From goole search: But to me the biggest improvement was the use of custom samples, not possible with the 77. You could transfer them by floppy or by MIDI SDS, in or out. Actually I loaded samples to SoundForge 3 directly from commercial floppies. Plus you had new FX chips including Aphex Aural Exciter, etc. Dexed is more a DX7, but I think you knew already. Yeah it was called Reatime Convolution Modulation, samples were used as modulators for FM operators, as I said, I could'nt get any usable sound starting from INIT but that was my limitation.
