I have the latest Cubase 14 from the sister site installed along with a couple of the VSTs, like Groove Agwnt, HALion, Padshop etc. I have some libraries and addons installed too. Using Steinberg Library Manager (SLM), the addons all show up and there are no conflicts etc, and I let it remove any duplicates it found. I also have let it optimise the Content folder for me.

However, when I open HALion, Padshoop, Grooev Agent agent, the addons do not show up in the instruments in Cubase. Any ideas why this is, or is there something I've missed?

If your Steinberg libraries and add-ons are not showing up in HALion, Padshop, or Groove Agent within Cubase 14 despite being visible in the Steinberg Library Manager (SLM), there are several potential causes and steps you can take to resolve the issue. Below, I’ll outline the most likely reasons and solutions based on common issues with Steinberg products, including insights from relevant discussions and support resources.

    Potential Causes and Solutions
    1. Improper Library Registration in Steinberg Library Manager
      • Issue: Even though the libraries appear in SLM, they may not be properly registered with Cubase or the VST instruments if they were moved, installed incorrectly, or not updated to match Cubase 14’s requirements. SLM must recognize the correct file paths for the .vstsound files, and Cubase needs to see these registrations.
      • Solution:
        • Open SLM and verify that all libraries are listed under the correct tabs (e.g., HALion, Groove Agent, Padshop). Check the file paths by clicking the "Details" button to ensure they point to the correct location of the .vstsound files (typically C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Content\VST Sound on Windows or /Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Content/VST Sound on macOS).
        • If any libraries show a "⛔" symbol or are marked as missing, use the "Locate" or "Move" function in SLM to redirect to the correct folder. Alternatively, move them to a temporary location and back using SLM to force re-registration.
        • If you’ve optimized or moved the Content folder, ensure SLM is pointing to the new location. Manually moving .vstsound files outside SLM can break the registration.
    2. Licensing Issues (eLicenser or Steinberg Licensing)
      • Issue: Some libraries, especially older ones or those from third-party manufacturers, may require an eLicenser dongle, even with Cubase 14’s Steinberg Licensing system. If the license for a library or plugin isn’t activated or recognized, the content won’t load in the instruments. Note that the eLicenser service was discontinued on May 20, 2025, which may affect older products.
      • Solution:
        • Open the Steinberg Activation Manager and ensure all your products (Cubase 14, HALion, Groove Agent, Padshop, etc.) are activated under your Steinberg account.
        • If you’re using older libraries tied to eLicenser (e.g., Groove Agent 5 or HALion 6 from Absolute VST Collection), connect your USB eLicenser dongle and launch the eLicenser Control Center to verify that the licenses are present.
        • If licenses are missing, contact Steinberg Support with proof of purchase to recover them.
    3. Corrupted or Incomplete Installation of Libraries or Plugins
      • Issue: The .vstsound files or plugin components may be corrupted, outdated, or incompletely installed, especially if you downloaded them from a third-party source or used an unofficial version (e.g., from a “sister site”). Cubase 14 may also require updated versions of libraries compatible with its architecture.
      • Solution:
        • Uninstall the affected plugins (HALion Sonic SE, Groove Agent SE, Padshop, etc.) via Windows Control Panel (Programs and Features) or macOS Applications. Look for entries like “Steinberg HALion Sonic SE 3 Component,” “Steinberg Groove Agent SE 5 Component,” or their Content counterparts.
        • Reinstall the plugins and their content using the Steinberg Download Assistant (SDA). Navigate to Cubase > Cubase Pro 14 in SDA, and ensure you download both the instrument and content files for each plugin.
        • After reinstalling, open SLM to register the newly installed content. Close SLM, then launch Cubase and open a project to check if the libraries appear.
        • If you suspect the libraries are from an unofficial source, download official versions from Steinberg’s website or SDA to ensure compatibility.
    4. MediaBay or Preset Browser Issues
      • Issue: Cubase’s MediaBay or the preset browsers in HALion, Groove Agent, or Padshop may not be refreshing correctly, causing libraries to appear missing. This can happen if the MediaBay database (mediabay3.db) is corrupted or if the plugins aren’t scanning the correct preset locations.
      • Solution:
        • In HALion or Groove Agent, open the preset browser, click the “All Instrument Sets” button, and check if the libraries appear. If they show but are unloadable (e.g., with a “⛔” symbol), force a rescan by selecting the “Kits” tab and ensuring “All Instrument Sets” is selected.
        • Delete the MediaBay database to force a rebuild:
          • Close Cubase and navigate to C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Cubase 14_64\MediaBay (Windows) or ~/Library/Preferences/Cubase 14/MediaBay (macOS).
          • Delete mediabay3.db and restart Cubase to rebuild the database.
        • If presets still don’t appear, open the plugin’s “Load Panel” (right-side panel), select the “Kits” or “Presets” tab, and manually browse for the libraries.
    5. Non-Standard or Moved Library Locations
      • Issue: If you moved .vstsound files to a non-default location (e.g., an external drive or custom folder), SLM may not recognize them unless the move was done through SLM. Non-standard locations can cause HALion, Groove Agent, or Padshop to fail to load libraries.
      • Solution:
        • Open SLM and use the “Move” function to relocate .vstsound files to the default location (C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Content\VST Sound on Windows). Avoid manually moving files in File Explorer/Finder.
        • Alternatively, create a symbolic link (symlink) to trick SLM into thinking the files are in the default location. For example, on Windows, use the Command Prompt (run as Administrator) to create a symlink:
          cmd
          mklink /J "C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Content\VST Sound" "G:\YourCustomFolder\VST Sound"

This links your custom folder to the default path.
        • After setting up the symlink, restart SLM and Cubase to register the libraries.
    6. **Compatibility Issues with Cubase 14MOUSE
      • Issue: Some libraries may not be compatible with Cubase 14 or the versions of HALion, Groove Agent, or Padshop installed. For example, libraries designed for HALion 6 may not work seamlessly with HALion 7 or Cubase 14 without updates.
      • Solution:
        • Check Steinberg’s website or SDA for updates to your libraries to ensure compatibility with Cubase 14 and the latest plugin versions.
        • If incompatible libraries are detected in SLM, remove them by selecting the library in SLM and clicking “Remove” to avoid cluttering the preset browser with unloadable content.
        • If you’re unsure which libraries are compatible, consult Steinberg’s support page or contact their support team.
    7. Cubase 14-Specific Issues
      • Issue: Cubase 14 may have specific bugs or quirks related to library recognition, similar to issues reported with Cubase 12 where VST Sound libraries triggered “missing library” warnings despite being available.
      • Solution:
        • When Cubase prompts about missing libraries on startup, select “Remove” to unregister old paths without deleting files. This may resolve the issue without affecting library availability.
        • Ensure you’re using the latest Steinberg Download Assistant (version 1.32 or higher) to update libraries to Cubase 14-compatible versions.
        • Check for Cubase 14 maintenance updates via SDA, as Steinberg often releases patches to fix library-related issues.
    8. Plugin or Cubase Cache Issues
      • Issue: Cubase or the plugins may be using an outdated cache, preventing new libraries from appearing in the instrument browsers.
      • Solution:
        • Reset the plugin cache in Cubase:
          • Go to Devices > Plugin Manager in Cubase.
          • Click “Rescan All” or “Reset and Rescan” to refresh the plugin and preset list.
        • Clear the plugin’s internal cache by closing Cubase, deleting any temporary files in C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Cubase 14_64\Cache (Windows) or ~/Library/Preferences/Cubase 14/Cache (macOS), and restarting Cubase.
    9. Potential Issues with Unofficial Software
      • Issue: You mentioned installing Cubase 14 from a “sister site,” which may imply an unofficial or cracked version. Such versions can cause library and licensing issues, as they may not properly integrate with Steinberg’s licensing system or SLM.
      • Solution:
        • If using an unofficial version, consider switching to a legitimate copy of Cubase 14 purchased from Steinberg or an authorized reseller. Unofficial versions may lack proper integration with SLM or Steinberg Licensing, leading to missing libraries.
        • Download official .vstsound files via SDA or Steinberg’s website to ensure compatibility and proper registration.
    Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Plan
Here’s a concise plan to systematically address the issue:

    1. Verify SLM Setup:
      • Open SLM and confirm all libraries are listed with correct paths and no “⛔” symbols.
      • Use the “Move” function to relocate .vstsound files to the default folder or create a symlink if using a custom location.
    2. Check Licensing:
      • Ensure all plugins and libraries are activated in Steinberg Activation Manager.
      • If using eLicenser-based libraries, verify licenses in eLicenser Control Center.
    3. Reinstall Plugins and Content:
      • Uninstall HALion Sonic SE, Groove Agent SE, and Padshop components via Control Panel/Applications.
      • Reinstall using SDA, ensuring both instrument and content files are downloaded.
      • Open SLM to register the reinstalled content.
    4. Refresh MediaBay and Plugin Cache:
      • Delete mediabay3.db and rescan plugins in Cubase.
      • In HALion/Groove Agent, manually check the preset browser and select “All Instrument Sets.”
    5. Update Software:
      • Ensure Cubase 14, SLM, and SDA are updated to the latest versions via Steinberg’s website.
      • Check for library updates compatible with Cubase 14.
    6. Test in Cubase:
      • Open a new Cubase project, add HALion, Groove Agent, or Padshop as VST instruments, and check the preset browser for libraries.
    7. Contact Steinberg Support:
      • If the issue persists, contact Steinberg Support for a remote session using “Steinberg Remote Support” (TeamViewer QuickSupport). Provide proof of purchase for faster assistance.
    Additional Notes
    • Default Folder Importance: Using the default VST Sound folder (C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Content\VST Sound on Windows) often resolves detection issues, as SLM is designed to look there by default. Avoid version-specific folder names (e.g., “HALion6” or “GrooveAgent5”) to ensure compatibility across plugin versions.
    • Manual Installation: If you have third-party .vstsound files, double-click them to open SLM and register them. Ensure they’re placed in the default folder before registration.
    • Common Error Messages: If you see errors like “some audio files are missing” in HALion or “VST Sound Library not found” in Cubase, these often indicate path or registration issues, which the above steps should address.
    If the Issue Persists
If none of these steps resolve the issue, it’s possible that the libraries or Cubase installation are corrupted, or the use of unofficial software is causing conflicts. In this case:

    • Consider a full reinstall of Cubase 14 and all plugins using official installers from SDA.
    • Schedule a remote support session with Steinberg Support for in-depth diagnostics. Download the Steinberg Remote Support tool in advance.
    • If using an unofficial version, purchase a legitimate copy to ensure proper functionality and support.
If you can provide more details (e.g., specific library names, error messages, or whether you’re on Windows/macOS), I can tailor the advice further. Let me know if you’d like help with any specific step, such as creating a symlink or navigating SDA!

In the instruments in Cubase? What does that mean? Those plugins you mentioned have browsers (Mediabay and File Folder) in them where the content shows up, are you referring to the browser in the plugin, as opposed to the instruments in Cubase? Can you take a screenshot to show what you're talking about, it's easier to help when everyone is on the same page.

    Is this what you're missing?

I've had the exactly same behaviour some weeks ago, when I installed a newer version of Cubase (if memory serves it was 14.0.30 Steinberg original licensed version).
The only way to restore the correct behavior after I lost patience was to restore my system from the previous day's backup. :suicide:
(Before this short-circuit action I had of course reinstalled Cubase, Halion, Lib Mgr, Activation system... - without success)

AND THEN a few days later, when I tried it again it was the same ... but after I installed the latest Version of Nuendo both, Nuendo and Cubase worked as intended again (or the instruments within respectively).
    Why: IDK :dunno:

Since then even after the update to 14.0.32 no problems.
But now I care to have a bottle of Holy water in reach when I install Steinberg updates

Sometimes, apparently not today, I have had to wait a bit or click on the All thumbnail at the top to get them to show up. Today as per usual, everything showed up like normal. I have never ever, in the 20 years of using Cubase had to delete and recreate the mediabay database file. It seems to help for some people, I'm not sure what's up with their system versus mine.

Yeah, sorry. I meant when I load the instruments into Cubase, nothing shows up in the instruments. Nothing shows up in standalone mode either. This is HALion 7's browser:

    upload_2025-7-14_19-5-50.png

However, in SLM, there's libraries installed by dragging into SLM, which has then removed duplicates and optimised, and they appear to be installed correctly and recognised, bit as above, none of these show up in HALion's browser (and same for Groove Agent, Padshop, Backbone etc too):

If I click on "Browser" in HALion, it seems "see" them, but not sure why they're not showing up in the MediaBay?!

This is a fresh install with the latest Cubase 14.0.32 and I have the libraries backed up on an external drive, which I normally copy into the default location in ProgramData\Steinberg\Content and then drag into SLM to register them all (which SLM appears to do as above screenshot).
