What's your opinion of Way Out Ware/AIR Music Tech Timewarp 2600? I didn't know it existed until a couple of days ago, but the whole "the only ARP 2600 emulator originally endorsed by the inventor Alan R. Pearlman" thing got me interested. I'm guessing it's an older piece of software that AIR has bought from Way Out Ware (or maybe they bought the whole Way Out Ware company?).

I've never had my hands on a real ARP 2600, and I'm not really a vintage analog synth connoisseur, so I wouldn't know if it's an accurate emulation or not. You seem to know a thing or two about analog and hardware synths though!

The "Korg - ARP 2600" sounds great. Korg always delivers quality. Cherry Audio has a cheap, bad-sounding engine, made for quick money in the budget sector. The other company is called GForce, which has made a name for itself with a lot of love and attention to detail. They're also reasonably priced. www.gforcesoftware.com

Cherry Audio has taken the same path as Arturia's business path.

I think it's the most difficult answer you could get.

First, everyone has some amount of subjectivity.

Then there are several models, some better than others (by words of J.M.Jarre, who I think knows pretty well the matter - if I remember he once said gray meanie is the best of all).

Then again, I think some owner of real synth could be biased like: hw always sounds better than the virtual thing, even, - and I don't give for granted -, if a vst could be undistinguishable from the original.

This thread got me interested in trying out Cherry Audio's software version of the iconic Yamaha CS-80, and I can say unequivocally without a shadow of a doubt that it certainly doesn't weigh as much as the original.

I like Lowdown. A lot. The rest... meh? Nothing wrong with them, really; on par with Arturia, as mentioned. I deeply dislike the organ, one of the worst Hammond clones out there imo but that's licensed, not made by them.

the reason why Arturia do the same thing. Their original plugins are very nice, with only a few exceptions.

The GX-80 is pretty good, way better than any of the other versions especially the softube one which sounds terrible

Cherry Audio had a ton of their synths given away in Humble Bundle releases over the past couple years so I picked them up.

I think I bought Memorymode and the Miniverse at intro prices ($40 each I think), and only the former impressed me much.

Still, because of the bundle releases I have like 8-10 of their synths for ~$120, and they provide good value for money in that case.

They don't touch the likes of U-he in terms of sound quality, and aren't versatile (like serum) or unique (like Dawesome Synths) and I don't recommend buying them for full price.

They're ok. Wouldn't call them bad though. Maybe bordering on bad when purchased for full price.

Couldn't agree more. I have never been super impressed with Arturia synth emulations and I don't understand why some people love them.

I have a friend I do mastering for who lives by them, but he does enough creative processing to make them sound alright. Sometimes they just sound bad though depending on the patch.

I'm totally with you on Arturia's emulations, I am not impressed. On the other hand I really like using Pigment, and of their hardware side have a Polybrute and a Drumbrute Impact which I enjoy greatly.

My audition of the Cherry CS80 didn't go well as it seemed that the sonics had no personality and it was just getting by with gui hypnosis and contrived marketing, at best but a poorly mimic of what the original could sound like .

    • 1) No, I don't know, and no, I wasn't assuming. I said: "I find it helps greatly, with a lot of these "simulation" or "models" of vintage synths, to run them through amps." That's not assuming.

    • 2) I'm sorry you haven't got the money, but we're all musicians here: it's a struggle for most of us. Some of us are professional however, it helps - we can ask bandmates, or just try it out at the gig.

    • 3) If you're not gigging, or playing/rehearsing with a band/ensemble at school, does that mean you're a DJ or bedroom producer? Are you monitoring through speakers or cans? My point being: try listening to these plugins differently, in a different environment.
