Most, if not all of this is easy enough to verify.

There are laundry lists of artists going back centuries who created something new by appealing to a goal they aimed for, not the audience who may or may not like it. They likely did not sit down and mathematically calculate it, and probably didn't concern themselves whether they were following any rules when they wrote it either. It has never mattered with a true composer that is not commissioned, who likes the music they write, or if it is not popular, as long as they like it because they are writing for the art and their own goals.

They understood from the get-go that if they write for someone else and the population they do not have to like it because it is a paid job then, not for art or to like what they're paid to do. A good musician can appreciate something else that is good even if they do not like it. The generation is irrelevant.

When cavemen played music they didn't have a house, so definitely there were no Windows or DAWS

I’m well versed in blues, rock, and most of the dance genres, my stuff is a mixture of that, my influence, it spans more decades than my age.

Music production and writing is way more sophisticated today than it’s ever been.


It’s usually a good few years later that all that great current music from back when is a tad easier to understand for ol’ fogeys, try this absolutely magnificent track from 30 years ago, if you don’t get it, you don’t get it, got it.

 

These are based on the knowledge that the products produced will also be sold. Once you've identified a hyper or trend, you increase production to serve the market. Nobody does mass production if there's no market for it. Otherwise, it's overproduction that has to be sold cheaply abroad, sometimes at cost. The overproduction from the USA after the war was sold cheaply in Europe.

 

I can't choose any of the two choices. Some of my stuff is liked, others not. So choosing either yes or no, would be inaccurate. Add "Some of it" to the list.

 

It's a fine enjoyable competent piece of work, the voice leading is very good, it could be excellent though, also think the voices are only adequate, better choir tones would improve the sound quality, try some of the amazing Bulgarian choirs and i might be up for bangin' dance collab with you.

It's not a matter of mixing and mastering. The issue goes back to before that. It's a matter of attitude towards music in the first stage and having deep musical literacy in the second stage. Today's generation does not have a good attitude towards music. This stems from their youth and naivety. Unfortunately, they have also created a powerful shield around themselves that does not accept anything from anyone other than themselves. They show a lot of irrational and negative emotional behavior, and adults are afraid that uncontrollable behavior will come from their young people, which will cause today's generation to fall into eternal ignorance and remain in it because no one dares to approach them. The elders can't find any way to advise the younger generation.

 

They generalize and simply devalue an entire generation. They devalue others to enhance their own. Please show us an example of what you are doing to combat the problem in a purely practical way? Please post your references as to what qualifies you to criticize others.

 

Hello @Balisani , I hope everything is going well with you. I think you didn’t quite get the point of my comment. There’s no doubt about the symbolic importance attributed to academies for becoming the last stronghold defending a broad education, not just focused on what the job market needs or says matters. I agree with you regarding the presence of mentors and their role in passing on knowledge, and how significant that is in musical evolution. Yes, even self-taught musicians learned from predecessors and mentors through oral tradition. The problem, in my view, isn’t the university or the whole bunch of philosophers, mathematicians, or conservatory-trained composers like Kodály, Stravinsky, Bartók, Boulez, blah, blah, blah...

I totally agree with your statement "You can't love music and not be an elitist in a way". In my case, I was a popular musician for 14 years, then went to study composition and conducting at the academy, but I kept my love and appreciation for popular and mass music, which is why I was always criticized there (they called me the devil’s advocate because I worked with composition for documentaries, animations, advertising, and finally video games). Even though I always gave zero fucks about the academy’s elitism, on the other hand, I’m eternally grateful for all the methods, compendiums, books, scores, and live performances of my music with orchestras and chamber groups that the academic environment provided me. Today, even outside the academy, I keep reading scientific articles, books in the field, studying scores, and using scholastic processes in my current work.

The real problem is coming to a forum focused on popular music and culture and dumping resentment just because mass culture simply doesn’t fit what’s “good, pretty, and fancy.” Again, no problem at all with the institution of the academy itself, but everything against the pedantry that seems to afflict those who come to a popular culture and music forum just to troll. In short: it’s more about how to do things right. If you’ve ever followed any of the thousands of recurring posts our pal fTRoLLster here, you know he does not present a single example of the tradition he covertly defends, uselessly belittling styles, genres, and even members' compositions in favor of a concealed superiority.

Put in the simplest way, from my point of view, all anyone has to do is ask anyone who their favorite artists are, even if they have over 100. They are still being elite in their probably unknown way, choosing that 100 or so above all else. I believe people gravitate towards what they like the most, and I am pretty sure that is very normal, no matter the age bracket. Cheers.

 

I like everything you do S. You have your own approach to everything and write whatever you feel at the time. That is a good way to write. I just watched the Cate Blanchet movie 'Elizabeth' recently, and this took me there. I enjoyed it.

Seriously I don't give a blip about this 'new generation' thing, the most important thing is that I'm having great fun doing what I do during my spare time.

 

I don't think I even know anyone under 30 at this point, let alone what they like. Nor do I care.

Things are pretty rough, especially in big cities. People hardly notice each other anymore and if they do, it's more as an obstacle. Everyone seems to be mainly preoccupied with themselves. Self-centeredness and selfishness are spreading. The cause: neoliberal competitive behavior is growing into everyday culture and making us increasingly lack solidarity. The media and advertising promote the egomaniacs, who gain too much influence.

I have spoken to many people affected in the public sector, in sport, in schools, in hospitals, with researchers and politicians. They all report how the egomaniacs are spreading. The problem is neglected in politics and the media. It is therefore high time to rethink and take countermeasures, both with a different policy and with each and every one of us. Otherwise, we will soon be living in a country where everyone is out for themselves and the only thing that counts is what is profitable.

The term "egoists" is already defined in the Brothers Grimm dictionary with a quote from Jean Paul: "Egoist, egoist: however, the egoist enjoys the greatest degree of domestic happiness, namely his own." In his recent book, child psychologist Dr. Stephan Valentin analyzes today's generation of children and young people and emphasizes the fatal danger that the next generation is increasingly becoming such "egoists." Lacking any ability to work in a team, overwhelmed by the constant pressure to perform from parents, school, and society, the younger generation lacks the ability to integrate well and successfully into a group, to engage socially actively with peers, and to feel empathy and compassion for others.

But who is to blame for the plight of the growing generation? Is it the overly ambitious, support-obsessed parents who try to make up for the deprivations of their own childhood with their own offspring? Is it a relentlessly performance-oriented school system that offers the individual little time to develop important social skills and, through the massive use of grades and assessments, virtually pushes the individual student into the role of the selfish and ambitious loner? Or is it contemporary society itself, in which, as we all know, only the strongest survive, in which compassion, social and altruistic commitment are negatively valued as pure luxuries, and in which the monthly salary payment alone determines who is "successful" in life in the eyes of the majority?

According to Valentin, all of the above factors are crucial in determining how well and whether a child develops social skills and avoids pursuing the solitary path of the selfish egoist. While the author does not fundamentally reject or demonize computers, television, and new media in general, Valentin does recommend using them in a targeted, time-limited, and consciously positive way. As an enrichment alongside playing with peers, but never as a replacement for it. Valentin's book reads smoothly, is written simply, and without excessive technical vocabulary. It is a recommended guide for parents who are not only concerned about their children's grades, but also want to promote their offspring's social behavior and social skills.
