It's better to fade out than burn away.

Hope I die before I do a coda.

Edit: I love me a coda, the longerer the betterer.

One of my favourites...@ 1:33 .. just leaves you wanting more coda.

Punctuations have little to do with music. Punctuations are useful for writing, constructing sentences. These terms and punctuations were proposed by several theorists in the 20th century for some works of composers of a certain period, but later the vulnerability of these models for describing other works was revealed. Punctuation marks such as:
    ampersand
    apostrophe
    brace
    bracket
    bullet
    colon
    comma
    curly brackets
    dash
    ditto
    exclamation mark
    exclamation point
    full stop
    hyphen
    interrobang
    inverted comma
    parenthesis
    period
    question mark
    quotation mark
    scare quotes
    semicolon
    slash
    space
Music must be explained in the language of music, but unfortunately this language cannot be expressed in writing.

The fade out is not a choice, that’s a technique imposed by the medium: in the era of 7” the time on the vinyl was limited to 3 mins or so. If the song went on beyond that, you had to fade.
    Today, fade out is outdated

    This way:
    TA-DAAAAAA!!!!!
Seriously, every piece deserves its own closure.
I like unsettling ending, Gary Wright above is an example.
Or think of the 3° movement of Howard Hanson - Symphony N°2, it seems quietly ending, then then an abrupt "doubt", then again quiet.
    Love that.

Every piece of music is made up of many parts. Some have fewer parts, some have more. I said in one of my posts that I wish the problem was only in the final part. All parts of music should have a certain order and be in very precise relationship with each other. Creating precise order is a very complex task. Those who compose music must believe in this order, otherwise there will not be the necessary continuity between the different parts and the listener will be confused. In pop music, creating order is not a big concern. Because in the lower parts, the drums or a repetitive chord progression do this, and whatever the upper parts of the music are, they will come together because of the power that the lower parts have in creating order. Like a magnet under a paper, bringing together the pieces of the song. If this magnet moves away from the paper, the iron filings will no longer be able to align in a specific order and the song will fall apart. This is what is done in popular music. But in non-popular music, the creation of order is done by other forces, and the different parts of the music are joined together by other elements. The final part, which is supposed to be the musical conclusion, is also controlled by other forces.

I prefer to have a created ending, but there are times a fade out is needed.

good question but it's so open ended we could talk about it forever.
if you are making a club oriented track, obviously you need some kind of outro for mixing. but then you see tracks like lust (by velocity) where the bpm go crazy towards the end. then you have tracks that completely change or introduce new elements towards the ending. or tracks that keep adding stuff and then go to a complete boom, end on the tonic, etc. etc. then there are also more experimental tracks like lithiummelodie 1 (by jan jelinek) that end in weirder ways. these are a few off the top of my head. there's also the classic final melody on the final chorus of the final part of the track; the real slim shady's flute-like sound appears only towards the end and still has a lot of power in the context of the track. etc. etc.
no point in talking without a genre i think.

yeah music has changed a lot from proper lengths of 3-4 to even 5 mins for radio play (i know the older 60s stuff for example was shorter), i think a lot of it, is attention span, stuff like tiktok, spotify, etc has ruined that, you can skip through and you want quickly to hear the main melody/the hook?!

The whole lets build tension thing from intro and release the tension in the outro? was replaced by the drop maybe?
Anothe reason, looks like the overall song struture has changed a lot? But i cant think of a particular reason right now?

Another point, most of the music (pop? only) is simple and crap? (i dont know if that is correct? Maybe its just a lot different today, since the people, the generation has changed? See point one again!)

Sometimes club oriented tracks seems to go for a specific, there is for example intro mixes, which are for dj set intros. And the outro thing you descibre, those fit perfect at the end of the dj set, due to having an accelerated bpm for ending the set.

But atleast they thought of outro or endings, compared to a boring fade out ...

In general - it could be that they want not to return to the resolved state of the melody? Wanting the listener to play it again?

Landing on the resolved tone, can feel very finished i guess?

    Just a few thoughts ...

The reason for the emergence of different genres of music is mostly due to either boredom and lack of enjoyment of previous genres or ignorance of the existence of previous genres. In both cases, new concepts have been created that may not be analyzed by previous methods of analysis and in some cases are completely opposite to what was before.
But there is one thing, and that is that people's nature usually hasn't changed much throughout history and they enjoy certain things. For example, if you look at the films that were produced in the 80s or 90s, most of them had strong stories and each part of the story had specific elements, and people were used to following the story in the style of the 80s and 90s. Today's films don't have clear sections and the themes aren't very identifiable. The music of previous decades was inspired by stories and literature and had specific sections. If the music produced today does not have specific and traceable sections, it can be said that today's music has distanced itself from the literature and storytelling of past generations and perhaps the only name that can be given to it is genre-free music.
