Great musicians are often very creative with song endings. One of my favourites is ELO's Mr Blue Sky. The song is in F but it resolves on a long C note. Also the ending has one of the most misheard lyrics right at the end where many people hear the robotic voice saying 'Mr Blue Sky' but in fact it's saying 'Please turn me over'.

I play it safe and pay for the silence from a reputable supplier. You can't be too careful these days.

The best possible ending is to have around a 7 minute song and then have it sort of be an aural "fuck you"

The best possible ending is to mimic with drums the sound of an incoming train for 3 minutes straight and then abruptly cut off the song as the lyrical subject gets run over:

Eh, it depends... Genesis had the audacity to end a 24 minute epic (Supper's Ready) with a fade and it was quite effective. And they even faded it live, how many bands can do a convincing fade out live?

Fade outs, to me, are effective when they're fairly long and become hypnotic. Like the song never ended it's still going on out there, somewhere... it just went over the hill...

let me be more specific, the most music i listen to has a structure with intro and outro by drums or sometimes even by melodics.
and i really really hate those 2:30 min pieces from recent pop music and then imagine they putt a fade out on these ... its ewww.

first you cant come up with a conviencing song structure, landing on such a short play time and then you use a fade out?

Lets just say if your piece is long enough (5-6 atleast) its already to fade it out. (thats just my opinion!)

    Fade
    Cadence
    Stop
    False ending followed by fade
    False fade followed by cadence
    Crescendo to crossfade next song
Someone walks into the studio with fresh brewed tea.
    Medley-fy it to another song.
    Diminuendo al fine
    ritardando Da Capo al fine
Da Capo and repeat forever... (this one's still playing in my head)
    Drummer walks oiff without notice
    Power failure

    With a bang of course!

Sure, I've no access to a cannon like the 1912 Overture, but any loud noise will do. Does wonders to wake people up after a 40 minute ambient drone.

Venue fire... good one! Frank Zappa is one of the few people to pull that off.
