Hi all, Hope you're doing well. I made this remix of Californication by Red Hot Chili Peppers yesterday. I'm still very new to music production - I've actually been doing it for only the last few months and I don’t have many people I can share my work with for feedback yet. https://soundcloud.com/patrickbarryjames I’d really appreciate it if anyone here could take a listen and let me know what you think. In particular, I’m curious if anything jumps out as sounding off, muddy, or unbalanced in the mix. Feedback on the overall vibe, genre blending, or anything else you notice would also be super helpful. Happy to also answer any questions should anyone have any.. I’ve tried to throw in a few elements from different genres to keep it interesting. I’m using Ableton 12. Thanks in advance for your time and ears Edit: I've thrown in a remix of Patti Smith's Because the Night in there for anyone who wants to have a listen. Its very rough around the edges but I just tried to throw a bunch of paint at the wall. Last edited: May 12, 2025 at 9:45 PM
Mix wise, In the last track the compressor on the vocals is really pumping, The ratio is probably set too high, and release is too fast, which causes level dips. Solution: take them back and use a plug like Trackspacer to create space for the vocals.
The bass and synth compete in some parts, and there's something like a tom? Also try to level/mix the sounds,
