I'm extremely talented, but my talent is dwarfed by my laziness.

 

I have some talents, but the day only has 24 hours. I think we should put the community more at the forefront again and complement it. What good are 30 guitarists to me if I can't find a piano player? It's a good thing that 8.2 billion potential musicians live here...!

Most people who talk about music professionally have no idea about music.
People who make music themselves don't talk much; they prefer to do it!

Regarding the Giacomo Turra fiasco (I didn't know who this was until 5 minutes ago) I think the phrase "The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources" comes to mind.

I definitely just thought of that phrase just now by the way, and it definitely wasn't a misattributed Albert Einstein quote

 

I know I'm repeating a bit of what some others have said, but I've always had an issue with people throwing around the word "talent", when they really should be saying "skilled" most of the time.

The only musical ability that I see portraying pure talent (not practicing or learning beforehand) is singing.

I have met some people who can basically hit pitches nearly perfect, change notes gracefully, have decent projection, and internalize rhythm well, with basically no practice. I would consider that talent.

I've never seen someone who can sit down at a piano, or pick up a guitar and just play the instrument to even a moderately acceptable degree without any training. Maybe drumming can be a bit of an exception to this, but singing is the only real exception I can think of.

Almost all of us speak and use language though, so that could be considered a form of training for singing in a way. Also if we consider talent to be part of the ability to learn things quicker than others, that can change things.

Idk, let's bring back the word "skilled" in favor of "talented".

 

I guess talent comes into play if you start to compare really. Like if you have two people, and they start learning a skill at the same time, the one that progresses faster, given they put the same amount of effort in, is more talented. Or maybe he/she just has better learning skills. I am not so sure anymore.
Then again, there is a difference in how much work is needed to achieve the same result for different people, so there seems to be something that you could call talent. It might be something else entirely though, and we just call it talent, because we don't know the actual reason.
But some people find it easy to learn a new language, and others struggle with it. Same with math or whatever. Maybe it all comes down to upbringing and the amount of attention that we received when we were young and how much our parents supported us. But we prefer to call it talent, because it makes it less unfair.

No this would, in my opinion come down to learning ability, whereby talent is meant to be a natural (some would argue a God given) skill, which I don't think really is much of a thing.

Take Michael Jackson for instance, he was widely acknowledged as one of the the greatest singers/performers of all time, however he had the helping factor of his dad beating the piss out of him as a child if he made an error.

If we all had that luxury maybe we'd all sing and dance like Michael did
