I think many of you are a little crazy in saying you would have made a different decision. In fact, the only one less detached from monetary reality is Splice. Spitfire's customers will probably find elsewhere to buy their sample-based instruments. That's why they have him saying he is "staying". They hope the customers will stick with him out of loyalty or some silly idea like that. But really, he is probably just going to be there for a "transition period" of whatever length of time.

They (Spitfire) as a company, are selling software, computer files, and tech support. Staring down the barrel of AI in an unpredictable situation.
That company could be worth nothing in a few years, and no-one can concretely know otherwise. Whatever they walk with after taxes is guaranteed money in the bank. Sure, they probably have some ironclad no direct compete clauses; but they will likely not prohibit doing any, and all; other work in music or software engineering.

Let's just say, to use a number; every license Spitfire sells is an average of $300. To make that $50 million on sales, that would be 166,000 licenses to sell. Good luck with that.

 

I thought by the title that they were going out of business or splitting up like Tonehammer did. Nah, just cash that check and walk away.
I mean how bad could an aquisition be? Opcode anyone?

I used to use Labs but it was buggy and always lost connection to the libraries I had downloaded. Wasn’t worth the hassle.

Never used their libraries, but had so much trouble with their original LABS free libraries, which I think were a 'taster'...?

They were good, but the amount of emails I had to send to support, as they kept dropping and losing the samples, which they agreed with, and re-vamped them, and started charging for them?

Deleted them, waste of time

 

When starting a business, it's always about acquiring new customers and building a good reputation through good support and quality. When money runs out and profits plummet, everything possible is monetized and costs are cut wherever possible, naturally at the expense of the customer.

 

"So, how does it feel to be here, now... you know...as we're on the cusp of bending you over and giving you "what fer"?
Is it a little bittersweet? err.. Tell me how you feel about it?"

It's all so cringy, I can't help myself.
The sleaze just drips off it like "F the Customer" brand syrup.

 

It’s good to see an intelligent take on this

 

Goals have simply changed.

The people who start companies today and those who did so a few years ago think differently than the generations before them.

Today, people set up a company to make it a financial success and then cash in as soon as possible (even if they claim the opposite).
Greed is king!

In the past, entrepreneurs simply worked without thinking about selling the company and it was always immanent that children and grandchildren would continue the work.

That is now a thing of the past.

In Spitfire's case, this means that the management team and the owners of Spitfire will take money and retire.

Splice will squeeze the maximum out of the company with minimal investment until in the end there is only the brand name left and the intrinsic value of the company has been sucked up.
