Hey everyone, first post here so I thought I'd introduce myself before I end up in any random conversations...looks like there's tons of great info and advice here that I could definitely be a part of. I've been using Cubase for at least 25 years as my primary daw, I've noodled around with most others but cubase is the only one that really has almost everything I'm trying to do in it by default.

In any case, any of you who are using cubase legit pre v11 might already know that the usb eLicenser system is being completely discontinued. I'm currently on cubase 10.5 pro with a usb dongle and simply can't cross-grade to 11 before the deadline at the end of May, and once that day comes I can no longer upgrade, I have to start over and buy it all from scratch...I'm a pretty broke musician and I already sunk close to a grand into cubase along the way, as well as using some 'other' versions in the past, like the infamous sx2.3. That was on Win though and I'm converted to Mac now. To sum things up I was trying to find an alternative solution to upgrading for hundreds of dollars right now to keep me going until I have what will be a big chunk of money again, and in hunting I came across this forum. I like the looks of it, I think I can learn and help with plenty here.

Anyways, if anybody is curious what kind of stuff I do I dropped my band camp in my profile blog link, or just look up Christl Math on any streaming service. I look forward to hearing other people's work!

There were shared versions of Cubase Artist, Elements, and eXTended for v.10 and 11. They have various limitations you'd expect. No versions of Pro. Cubase 12 Pro was where they changed things and versions of 12 Pro started being "shared". To use them, you have to disable SIP (System Integrity Protection). There are a few methods to run 12 Pro,without disabling SIP; but that is less common practice. Most users just disable SIP. How any of them will run will just depend on your Mac and MacOS versions.

Thanks for the info, seriously. I was on top of it after some hunting and am now at the point of Cubase Pro v12.0.20 VR crashing to the desktop upon license checking it seems. I DO also have cubase 10.5 installed as well, but I've never had conflicts while having multiple versions of cubase installed simultaneously before. I'm hunting through the forums more in search of tip or answers, if you have any please drop a line! Thank you regardless.

    You can:

If you are still using eLicenser-based products, the end of the service will have several important implications:

    • You will still be able to update your eLicenser-based product to the latest version. However, it is essential that the eLicenser-based product is registered in your MySteinberg account.

I use Logic, but I do not remember (and cannot find now) a R2R release of Cubase 12. Cubase 12 Pro was released by VR for Mac. You have to disable SIP because it obviously writes to system file locations which are protected by SIP. All the VR Steinberg releases require SIP disabled, or one of the keychain code signature types of methods. It's just a lengthy process, so most people just disable SIP and get it over with.

R2R will generally not release anything which has to tamper with system files.

Thanks Timer, I was already aware of this, but my problem is a bit deeper. I spoke directly to Steinberg about it, part of my license is corrupt and unfixable until I buy a new usb dongle from Steinberg and then they gave me a lengthy list of instructions to follow to get it to work...but what THAT does is allow me to update to v11 or up so I can still get cross grade discounts for the next ten years or whatever they decide, BUT, even if I do all that I'm just broke atm, too poor to be able to afford a 300$ upgrade before the end of May unfortunately (oh how I'd love to!)

and clone, I did go through the SIP disable process and rebooted a few times after installing etc, haven't figured anything out yet and the crash dump file means very little to me, I'm not a coder more of an all around A+ tech though so I have the basic knowledge needed for you know, plenty of advanced stuff, thank you for the tip though...this used to happen to me a lot when I first started using Macs about 13-14 years ago whenever I would install like a cubase update or a pro-tools update...final cut...everytime the fix was to update the rebindings, but I don't think that's even a thing in Mac OS anymore (I'm on Catalina btw)

upload the crash dump report somewhere and add a link here or send a pm with it. Or just paste it into a spoiler tagged section of your post.

Include the relevant machine specs if it is stock, or any sort of upgraded parts like GPU, etc. Did you upgrade to Catalina by using OCLP? The usual stuff like that.

I do not know of anyone who has had a legit version of Cubase installed on a machine, who then later switched to VR versions. Most people using it were not using Cubase prior to installing VR version. Or trying to run them side-by-side. Cleaning up all of Steinberg detritus might be very important.

It's kind of funny they are trying to schlep you into buying a new dongle, when they got rid of it themselves two versions ago because people hated it.

thanks, I shut down for the night already but I will do that stat in the morning…but, if all I had to do was buy a new usb dongle to transfer my license I would be fine with that, it’s like 30$ and legwork, but in order to transfer the license to a soft license you NEED to be running v11 or up, which is the real shaft for me. People cross grade from lower versions constantly, and this is just cutting such a huge chunk of people off unless they upgrade immediately.

Your Cubase 10.5 Pro license will remain on the USB dongle after May 20, 2025, and will continue to work—as long as the dongle doesn't break and your system is supported.

Sorry I see you're on Mac now and not sure about Cubase with Mac.
If you can use Windows again then head over to see our sister and download either Cubase 13 or 14 Pro R2R... you will need to install the latest:
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64)
    TEAM R2R Root Certificate
TEAM R2R Steinberg Silk Emulator v1.3.0
Restart computer after the changes and then install
    Cubase 14 R2R
