    I want a version of this that still is connected to google translate. I'd be fine switching to firefox for many uses, but often spend much of the day reading webpages in languages I don't understand, and firefox's version is not great

    Firefox Translation --> https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/website-translation

    Firefox has added new translation features that allow you to seamlessly browse the web in your preferred language. As you navigate the site, Firefox continuously translates new content in real time. The translation feature was rolled out gradually and has been available for all users since Firefox version 118. A new Translate selection feature has been added starting in Firefox version 128, that enables you to highlight and translate selected text.

    Yes it can get involved. With chrome it was not only enough to stop the browser updates but the extensions as well. The info is out there and readily available.

    As far as FF goes it's not a real big deal to update it. It's telemetry and updating are quite easily silenced. I have found that by applying older versions of the browsers to get around any age incurred limitations will greatly extend the longevity without having to fully update to latest (most important with chrome). If you don't want your working profile all messed up, simply back up your profiles before installing the newer browser bits. Then apply the offline stand alone installers to get the newer browser bits. Once you're done you can restore your regular profiles and skip along your merry way with your regular profile completely intact. It's still a chore to have to re-secure the new browsers and shut down all the telemetry and updaters again.

    Using the above tactics I have extended browser life way past that time period.

    For chromium based browsers (but not chrome itself I use the linguist addon which does *offline* translation (which means translations without google knowing what sites you are visiting). It's not automatic, you click on the translate button when you need it.

    There's a much better extension called Translate Web Page (TWP) for firefox. I only realized firefox added their own because I accidentally turned TWP in favor of the new inbuilt translator. Spent a while on the rusky track wondering why the english translation was way more broken than usual.

    I recently made the switch to Brave and as a former Chrome user the switch was a walk in the park as Brave has the same framework or fundament like chrome. Thus, the adjustment to the new browser was really effortless.

    I'd recommend Brave to anyone and especially to Chrome users. You won't regret it, promise!

    I use Floorp as a browser (firefox based) and Ad Nauseam as my adblocker. It's based off of ublock but it's designed in a way that fakes impressions by giving out free (fake) clicks to every ad that appears before blocking it. I highly recommend Ad Nauseam, it works on Chrome too just need to install it manually as Google has banned it from their store because it actively harms advertisers.

    You can also just use the uBlock Filterlists in Braves build in adblocker, though they keep supporting manifest v2. i have a little server that fetches uBlock & Easylist every hour. you can use the filterlist if you want: http://82.165.127.8/filters.txt
