Playing the piano or any other musical instrument is like playing a game. Games can be of two types: either like children's games, full of fun, or like the games of adults in economics.
There are no specific rules in children's play, and it is because of this lack of rules that children are always happy because they do whatever they want. But the situation is different in the adult game. One wrong move can lead to heavy losses or to prison.

As someone who has been posting here since 1980, can you show us how you move your fingers on these?

You must have learned a lot of techniques since 1980. Can you show the members those techniques? It would probably be one of the best instructional videos. Suppose you don't have any songs in mind beforehand and you want to create a song on the spot.

Pardon my ignorance. I learned something new today.
Interesting that they use es and is suffixes for everything but B. Why is B special in German?

No - the AI is buried in the garden!

I have stored some knowledge on my own hard drive that I use myself or have recommended to others.

Musical instruments are like living things. Learning to play them takes a lot of time. Most pianists (of course, those who compose their own pieces and are not just performers of other people's pieces) are usually old, and this is because they have spent a lot of time learning their musical instrument in depth.
Learning how to play a musical instrument is one thing, learning how to create individual music with the instrument is another. Many pianists are just performers and have not created great works themselves because they have focused only on playing. Learning both aspects is very time-consuming and requires a lot of resources.
If learning is done correctly, which usually doesn't happen, we will reach the stage of internalization. This means that learning to play musical instruments requires several steps, like different levels of a game. Each training corresponds to one stage, and deep individual thought is required at all stages. Many people don't spend time on all the steps and only go through the first ones.

If you're interested in traditional "classical" technique I'd have a look at Taubman lessons, Denis Zhdanov, Josh Wright and tonebase.

You do not need notation to play or write music. It is useful though if you wish to write for real Orchestras because they won't have the patience to wait for you to teach every one of them their parts by ear with 64 or more of them.

    • George Shearing was a wonderful composer and virtuoso and blind so notation was irrelevant.
    • Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles were both blind so notation had nothing to do with their skills as writers or performers.
    • Nobuyuki Tsuji is considered a great composer and virtuoso and is blind
    • Lennie Tristano was blind and a great jazz/Latin composer and virtuoso.
    • Tommy Emmanuel does not read a note of written music and is a respected guitar instrumental composer and recognized in the top ten virtuosos on acoustic guitar...
There are plenty more but the point is, find something that teaches you to play the way you want to learn to play - that is the smartest, not the hardest path. You can use notation or not, whatever works...You can be whatever you want to be, nobody else can decide that for you.

Go into YouTube and ask for "learn to play piano" - I'm sure you'll find some online thing that will work for you.

The OP's question is a bit ambiguous. Does he mean playing the piano, how to play other people's pieces on the piano, or becoming someone like Beethoven? Is his requested videos just about how to play ready-made pieces, or the player be a composer as well?

They were mostly active in jazz. In jazz, everything is right and nothing wrong.

    • Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles are Motown/Soul and R&B
    • Nobuyuki Tsuji is Classical
    • Tommy Emmanuel is Country music
    • Lennie Tristano was Latin trained and moved into jazz
    • George Shearing was taught by ear playing accordion and piano and moved into jazz
Are you FOSTER? You are behaving like it because you definitely do not know their history and you obviously know very little about jazz.

Just start playing, I did. I'd been strumming the guitar for about six years (learned the basic fundamentals at 12 years old for about 8 months from a teacher or two after school) and had written a song about my cat Thomas but knew nothing really about theory. When a freshman at college I discoved the piano practice rooms in the music department after wandering around after my Music Appreciation 101 course one day and just sat down and banged away. After a few sessions of doing this and most definitely pissing off the music majors trying to learn their required pieces, I heard an amazing singer in the next little practice room that blew my mind. It was if Mahaiia Jackson was working out or something. It turns out the young woman who called herself Pee Wee was a dwarf and was about 4'3. I had seen a poster for a musical competition that was coming up in a few weeks and just blurted out, "I'll write a song and we can perform it at the competition" and she said, OK. I did write what I titled The Caterpillar Song (which I now sadly forget outside of the first few lines...damn) and we beat out about 15 acts that night and split the $100 prize.

Now after 45 years of no formal training or tutorials have a few good days at the old ivories when I get lucky. https://whyp.it/tracks/257012/nana-noodle.

    Go for it!

I wouldn't go as far as that. As a beginner he doesnt have to know about scales or how to modulate from one key to another.
BUT I totally agree on the notation thing. And thats not that hard to learn. I guess your suggested link comes with the sheets? Then thats the way to go!

That performer has already memorized all of Beethoven's piano sonatas from sheets and has them all in his head.
There are two ways to look at making music. One is like building a simple sandcastle that kids build on the beach. Another is like building a real castle that is supposed to protect the city.
