Hashish and hemp are purely plant-based and come from the hemp plant.

Coke comes from the coca plant; locals chew the leaves, and others process it chemically.

Heroin is produced semi-synthetically, with morphine as the starting substance.

Morphine is obtained as an extract from raw opium, the dried milky sap from the seed pods of the opium poppy.

Psilocybe is a purely plant-based substance from the Psilocybe mushroom genus.
Fly agarics are also a purely plant-based substance.

LSD comes from ergot, a derivative of naturally occurring ergot alkaloids.

As we can see, nature has provided us with some amazing plants. But chemists have found a way to chemically alter many things.
The dose makes the poison; alcohol is great for disinfecting and preserving food.

Ecstasy also produces acute effects that can range from unpleasant to dangerous, depending on the dosage and composition of the pill. Common, unpleasant effects include: dizziness, nausea, sweating, dilated pupils, jaw grinding, and dry mouth.
    The more dangerous effects include:

    - Rapid heartbeat, - Increased body temperature and dehydration, - Severe anxiety (horror trip), - Depression, - Psychotic disorders, - Kidney and liver failure, - Circulatory collapse

The thing with MDMA, and all other drugs to be fair, but particularly MDMA is that it is quite safe when used sensibly - it's actually quite difficult to die off even when abused in most cases. Most deaths are from allergic reactions (some people die from eating peanuts), adulteration, combining with other drugs or user error like drinking too little or too much water (drowning is the cause of death in that case, not ecstacy).

I spent 15 years of my life participating/working in the techno/trance scene where the most ridiculous amount of drugs you can imagine were being consumed and I never witnessed or heard of a single person dying from ecstacy in the scene I was around. That was the 90s into the 2000s, at the peak of ecstacy use. I was based in Manchester, UK, which had thousands of party heads going at it full on, every weekend, year on year for a very long time. Some are still at it 30 years later...

Of course, in order to avoid any chance of danger/complications, by far the best course of action is to live 100% clean. No drugs (including caffeine and alcohol), strict exercise regime, calorie/nutrient controlled diet, avoid vehicles, don't ride a horse, don't play sport, watch TV or go on the internet, and definitely don't participate in politics in any form. That should reduce the risk of death quite considerably, provided the air we breath, the food we drink and the water we drink is free from pollutants, we can stay warm, dry enough and aren't subject to a deadly virus' or war that wipes us out. But yeah, don't take MDMA, it's dangerous.

Edit: That last paragraph reads a bit pedantic. I don't mean to be, I'm just attempting to illustrate that life itself isn't free from danger and that some perspective is necessary when it comes to proportional risks. MDMA is a very low risk drug in comparison to many, many others.

But your suggestion to avoid complications is an absolute pipe dream; no one lives the way you suggest. The only positive thing about techno back then was that many people danced—that is, they were physically active and prevented the lack of exercise.
As a young person, I used to go dancing a lot on the weekends, even though I'd worked all week. Today, young people are idly glued to their smartphones and computers. The biggest and best drug is intelligence.

So they save their money for drugs and use the money they save to travel the world or buy a musical instrument.

    Back to the original thread...

In the 70s, in my neck o'th'wood. This was quite a thing.

I worked a Northern Soul festival a few years ago and met quite a number of the people involved in that scene. Great people and so absolutely obsessed and dedicated to their genre it's unreal. It's amazing how they've kept that scene together until this day. They have a saying of "Keep The Faith", which they certainly have.

Today, and proof that not all 70 year olds dance like Trump...

Not arguing with that remotely. prescription drugs in some cases can be far more dangerous. But there is a danger just like a gun by the person who uses it.
I've never heard of anyone being stoned to death on ganja though :hahaha: - No I do not use ganja.I had my last drink and joint 20 years ago and I was never a heavy user of either which is why it was not difficult for me. I have never used hard drugs either, I saw what it did to other musicians I toured with and that was enough for me to stay right away from them.

I am not bothered, you took the time explain your logic in interesting and friendly discourse, and I do not disagree that it is low risk. Like anything, more often than not, people are their own worst enemies. Some people unfortunately, know that they shouldn't do something in binging excess, but do it anyway. I am confident we have both met some of those people.
