That was the age people were searching for new ways to do anything...flares, post 60s afro haircuts and long hair everywhere, satin shirts and way more...
LSD was huge in the 60s and 70s. There are plenty of articles out there on the web if people really find it interesting.
Some are over-exaggerated, some are completely inaccurate and some are truly 'if only they knew'.

At the Woodstock festival, a policeman came up to a hippie with a sniffer dog and said, “This dog tells me you’re on drugs...”
He said, “Am I? You’re the one talking to dogs.”

Cheech and Chong were a huge comedy duo for the drug culture of the 1970s too. People gravitate towards "The Dude" from Big Lebowski but they were doing the same thing , funnier and better 20 years earlier.

Drug use in Germany in the 1970s was no higher than it is today in 2024.
In fact, current data show an increase in drug use in recent decades:

    Current situation:
In 2021, 9.6% of adults (18-64 years old) in Germany consumed illicit drugs within the last 12 months.
Cannabis is the most commonly consumed illicit drug, with a 12-month prevalence of 8.8% among adults in 2021.

The use of cocaine and other stimulants is showing an increasing trend.
The 12-month prevalence for cocaine rose from 0.6% (2015) to 1.6% (2021) among adults between 18 and 59 years.

    Historical context:
In the 1970s, drug use in Germany was less widespread than it is today.
The drug consumption boom in the Federal Republic of Germany only began after the 1970s.
In the GDR, access to illegal drugs was very limited, and there was no comparable drug boom to that in the Federal Republic.

    Development over time:
Since the early 1990s, an almost continuous increase in the consumption of illegal drugs has been observed.
The prevalence rates for the consumption of illegal drugs, especially cannabis, show a similar trend over the last 20 years, with an almost continuous increase.

In summary, it can be said that drug consumption in Germany is significantly higher today than in the 1970s. The data show a clear trend towards increasing consumption of illegal substances over the past decades, with a particularly strong increase since the 1990s.

It seems Germany was a lot smarter with drugs in the 1970s than America, Australia, NZ and England.

The main problem for Germans is and has been alcohol; it is freely available and socially accepted.

My only memories of dancing in the 1970s look something like this. Though I think that there's a fair argument to say it may not legitimately qualify as "dancing"...

I love seeing it - the hairstyles, the clothes, the dancing style...!

Alicia Bridges - I Love The Nightlife (1978)

Disco diva Alicia Bridges scored big in 1978 with her chart-topping hit "I Love the Nightlife."
It was her biggest moment in music, making her self-titled debut a definite part of the feel-good disco scene of the late '70s.

I based it on his post, less drug problems in that period. worse later, sure, but I took it at face value, being German that he knew what he was talking about, being his own country.

see below the excerpt from his post.

I was born in Germany, and it wasn't as bad as in England and America. It wasn't until 10-15 years later that the drug wave swept over Germany, and with it, drug and acquisitive crime. Today, gangs from all over the world operate here; recently, customs seized 20 tons of cocaine in the port of Hamburg. It's a multi-billion dollar business for the drug mafia. Today, hemp, or grass, is legal for personal use.

Many of my fellow human beings in the 70s were kind, decent, and intelligent people. The violence was very low, and then the devil came upon us. Where from? I suspect it's the Americans! Today we have knife violence, mass rapes, and murders, mostly by immigrants.

Every now and then, one of these madmen, usually mentally disturbed Islamists, drives a car or into demonstrations or Christmas markets, with fatal consequences. Thanks again to our stupid government for allowing and making all this possible.

Actually, watching that, there are a lot of critics who speak of the influence punk had on many things. I think punk may have been responsible for what they later called a mosh pit. So yes, I think you can call it a form of dancing :)

Much the same. In my country it was and still is the same with alcohol as well as the drugs. The nickname for alcohol is 'animal juice'.
They call it that because it turns normally sane people into pigs.

Canned Heat - Did some gigs with them in the 90s, working with the support band. Nice, down to earth guys I thought. They got better riders than us though and didn't drink much so their dressing room was a good source of additional sustenance..

The new chemical drugs: fentanyl, crack, heroin, crystal meth, coke, speed, ecstasy, pills, etc. Welcome to hell!

Number of drug-related deaths in the US at an all-time high

Christa Dettwiler / June 2, 2022 Mainly due to increased social isolation due to the coronavirus and economic hardship, people are turning to opioids and methamphetamine.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are reporting new record highs in drug-related deaths. Around 108,000 people died of an overdose last year. A report in the New York Times cites the opioid fentanyl, which is often used with other drugs, and the stimulant methamphetamine as the main causes.

Drugs claimed more lives in the US in 2021 than AIDS, traffic accidents, and gunshot wounds combined – about a quarter as many deaths as COVID-19. According to the National Institutes of Health, deaths from meth overdoses tripled between 2015 and 2019.

Synthetic opioids were responsible for 71,000 deaths in 2021 (13,000 more than the previous year), while stimulants such as methamphetamine claimed 33,000 victims (8,000 more than the previous year). The 15 percent increase follows a double increase in 2020.

Fentanyl is a white powder that can easily be combined with other drugs, such as heroin, meth, or cocaine. Therefore, counterfeit pills frequently appear, which—when combined with antidepressants such as Xanax—can have fatal effects. There is also a trend toward so-called "speedballs," a combination of stimulants and opioids. In the US state of Vermont, which has experienced one of the sharpest increases in overdoses, 93 percent of opioid-related deaths are attributed to fentanyl.

Dan Ciccarone, a professor of family and community medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, is concerned: "We are facing an unprecedented epidemic of synthetic drug mixing. Never before has an opioid as powerful as fentanyl been combined with the equally potent methamphetamine," he told the New York Times.

Punk was most certainly responsible for the mosh pit. I watched (participated) in its development and crossover to the metal crowd after bands like Antisect / Amebix / Discharge / Conflict / Disorder / Chaos UK etc in the early 80s and then later the crust/grind bands such as Doom / Extreme Noise Terror / Napalm Death directly influencing the extreme/thrash bands that were to emerge. The "dancing" also became much more aggressive (dangerously so) than the relatively benign pogoing of the 70s.

The question remains though, whether a mosh pit can be considered dancing. Muhammad Ali seemed to consider boxing as dancing but I'd hardly call what goes on in the ring a disco...

All drugs are chemicals. Whilst some can be particularly dangerous, ecstasy isn't, and listing it along with such things as smack, meth and fentanyl is akin to propaganda. You may as well list cannabis, psilocybin and LSD in there as well for all the deaths that they cause (zero *mental health aside). Alcohol is THE most dangerous drug of all and yet it's celebrated and promoted by a huge proportion of society, even by supposed anti-drug evangelicals (who are really campaigning against anything that suggests a countercultural narrative).

I agree it is nowhere as dangerous as the others, but for anything to be declared as not dangerous, wouldn't it be reasonable to assume that nobody has died from its direct abuse?

MDMA/Ecstasy deaths are nowhere as high, but I think that while it is a methamphetamine, and there are recorded direct abuse deaths, it's not really propaganda. Probably law enforcement has over-exaggerated it, but unlike smack and other powdered recreational drugs, I do agree it is nowhere near as bad and there are no direct abuse marijuana deaths, only deaths after they have taken it doing something they probably should not have while really stoned.

That was really funny (haha) :)
I think we may possibly be in the same age bracket. I remember watching the Thrilla in Manila on TV.

    EDIT:
Most people arrested when stoned weren't arrested for driving too fast or dangerously. They were arrested for driving too slowly.
