well i just know from playing large shows and going their last year to take this girl to see the grateful dead, that their sound system is below average. im not like an expert on acoustics but i can tell the difference, the way the sound bounces in the circle sucks. i was not expecting that from that venue

like the sound quality is clear but its weak in depth, bass and volume, the vocals also sit weird. we went for the second show a couple days later and i got us spots in the center when i realized how the sound was bouncing, it was better but still below average for the industry. like even Red Rocks, which is an open venue surrounded by rocks and wind, that ive both played and attended others concerts at, sounds better. even the Ascent in Nashville has a better sound system and these are open spaces where the sound is better

i get the imagery is whats special about it, but if theyre gonna have concerts there and residencies from artists that will a bring a lot of money, they have to upgrade the sound, its subpar. not that i can fill 20k seats but if i could, id rather play the MGM. like im not an acoustic architect but the speakers are behind the screen in a circle, idk how that makes sense in having the sound bounce well

if they fix that though, it would be a cool spot to host a music festival and would attract more artists. everyone wants to play in a place that sounds good

I miss the old days when the performance by a talented, competent artist/band WAS the show.

I'm surprized to hear that, i've never been to the Sphere, just not a Vegas guy, only been to Vegas once.
But sound reinforcement has really gotten to be a sophisticated science, they should be able to fix that.
I've got a yamaha sound bar that does surround sound (or a decent enough emulation) just from one location.
and it has 3 0r 4 other images, like stereo, 3 beam,5 beam etc. as well as different eq profiles. So I know if they can load that much science in a consumer stereo, they should be able to have mapped all the acoustic space in the sphere.

The hollywood bowl had similiar problems for a number of years, and had a group of different sized spheres suspended inside the arching shell to correct it, It was okay, but they really improved it over the years by adding powered speaker arrays on either side of the stage.

I havent been myself, but a friend went for a few nights of the Anyma show's, and he said it was surprisingly good sound! I value his opinion, as he does sound for large scale EDM events. The whole funktion one rave scene and all that. Now, Anyma and The Grateful Dead are pretty opposite ends of the spectrum, so both opinions could very well be true. A live band is definitely a lot harder to tame, and make sound good, than an EDM artist.

@Garamondo Furbish : yeah thats what im hoping, im not really a Vegas person either (outside of the food) the weather is awful in Nevada. the actual space itself is nice though, like being in it is impressive. if they get the sound right like that, cause the Hollywood Bowl sounds great, i didnt know they went through all of that. that would be great; because it could be an amazing venue

@shinyzen : ive played hundred of shows in my lifetime in venues across the world in all kinds of places. ive heard even Opera houses in NYC with beautiful acoustics and basically no sound system that sounded great, its not really about the style. everything sounds good in a good space with a good soundsystem. it definitely doesnt have the low end for EDM and ive been to Watergate in Berlin

now to be clear im not saying its horrible; but its very noticeably thin. if youre in Vegas by chance or get a chance to go for yourself, check it out

@Grape Ape..When we went to The Sphere last summer I drove my wife crazy by telling her I hid the diamond necklace that I bought her for our 30th anniversary in one of the corners of the venue. You're right, the sound is really bad there...her screams of frustration were bouncing from all around and made the ear piercing racket even more intolerable. They really need to correct it.
