News source say Digg, is relaunching with some interesting moderation ideas to keep it from turning into the Reddit cesspool.

    and

it was originally sort of the equivalent to the usenet chatgroups with a web interface, due to some bad management choices in rebuilding the databases and breaking them as well as trying to monetize the site, they eventually went tits up and everybody fled (to their regret) to Reddit.

they are accepting early sign up

I went from digg to reddit way back when, and from reddit to lemmy when reddit's leadership started turning the place into the corpo brainrot content dumpster it is today. lemmy is great IF you're technically inclined (fediverse = confusing for some), IF you don't mind the old-reddit vibes (eye-rollingly edgy at times, more often than not left-leaning) and IF you're not into endless scrolling.

I wonder if the new digg is gonna steal lemmy's thunder like bluesky stole mastodon's thunder.

always good to have an alternative, they've got a guy from Reddit and a guy from the Old Digg, so it should be interesting what they come up with...right now it appears they want to keep the company private, which means they have no shareholders to answer to, so they can experiment....

I've never seen an environment (virtual or physical, fictional or real) as effectively opposed to free speech as Reddit nowadays. It's systematically unusable.

Digg was very good until they changed it and it basically fell off a cliff, a perfect example of how to ruin a good thing.

Ah, venture capitalists driven by wanting to create a community experience for their users. Yeah right.

Agreed. But wasn't free-speech supposed to be the main theme of the entire reddit site to begin with? These days It's all about corporate liability and ownership. As soon as the corporate model takes over anything, all is subjected to what the status quo dictates as moral, or immoral. Wherein these days 99% of the status quo is made of 'karens' that don't know their holes from an ass in the ground.

I look forward to trying out Digg, I went ahead and signed up with a bogus email address, i had laying about. (like I always do)
    haven't had a reply yet...

I check reddit daily mostly for shits & grins - the frontpage is really terrible, just a firehose of negativity.. I created a reddit account when I left Digg (the original), but only used it for about a month before departing after being brigaded for mentioning a friends death and my hopes she was in a better place, I was attacked to for not being an atheist, and left in disgust. I am not interested in converting anyone to my religious views, most days I can't even explain them to myself, let alone a stranger, but I am appalled that total strangers want to attack anyone who doesn't believe the same as them. The hive mind was very evident even back then which was probably late 2009.

Reddit is handy for technical questions if you know which subs to look in. I never sign in there, don't even know if I still have my password. I liked Usenet Newsgroups, probably my entire reason for ever getting involved in the internet. Wide ranging discussions, knowledgable people, decent moderation and newbies were brought up to speed in a way that kept conversation going. It was a great help with technical problems as well as understanding the media and politics, economic issues etc. It was some very smart people back in the 1990's , I've never experienced anything quite like it since.. Digg had a little bit of the feel, but also the whole "digg/bury" paradigm really polluted things by the end. Still Digg was a lot of fun and I didn't mind logging in and discussing things with people without being brigaded.

Reddit is dead and waiting to fall over, its a cesspool.
