Here's me thinking: does "synthy" rhyme with "irony"? Like "goldy" and "bronzy"?

If we're being completely honest, no synthesizer sounds like a Synthi!

This is a good point though. I think going forward if anyone posts the first response to a Foster thread they should header it with
    THIS IS A FOSTER THREAD
so these sorts of embarrassing faux pas don't happen. Otherwise the lack of context can make things weird. :winker: Because you don't always notice.

Convincing at what, I mean large metallic spring-mass resonators constructed in an extremely unconventional (dare I say artifical) way? That isn't really what my brain associated with a "natural" instrument either. I'm not saying they sound bad, but Physical Audio synths often sound "synthetic" to me too.

I don't buy it. All the fungus that I jam with are keyboard players (although I do know of a few woodwind players) and none have modular setups. Don't believe everything that you see on the internet!

But you do not want to inform him the jig is already up, every time. Also, a good percentage of people read the title only and reply without ever reading the first post.

For me, more natural sounds usually come from using a sampler.

As for natural sounding synths...oddly enough, the most organic sounding synth sounds I've created were from wavetable synths....namely my Ensoniq Fizmo or something like the Usual Suspects Xenia softsynth. It may seem counter intuitive as the stock sounds on these kinds of synths can be incredibly digital and thin sounding but they're capable of creating sounds that sound incredibly thick, lush, and organic....sounds like scraping two massive stones together, tectonic plates shifting, sounds like glass or like metal on metal.

One of the things that first got me into electronic music was the sound design aspect. Listening to groups/artists like NIN, Skinny Puppy, Coil, Aphex Twin etc.. and wondering, what they were using to get some of the more organic sounds. I had heard plenty of synth pop and the sounds they were getting sounded nothing like typical synth pop. I would later find out it was mostly sounds coming from samplers. Sampling to me is much more than merely sample playback. To me, a sampler is a synthesizer that uses any sound as a starting point instead of the standard synthesis waveforms.
