    Hell-O!

I am doing a project that will need some not so heavenly voice-overs, and I'd like to try to do something a bit like Pinhead's voice.

I'm just wondering what effects would be used to achieve this. The person's voice will be deep and I just need to know whatever other effects are necessary for this.

In Pinhead's case, Doug Bradley, the actor, doesn't have a very deep voice, but they achieved to change his voice very well.

    Anyway, here is a sample:

Warning: these are bits from horror scenes. If you can't take horror, don't watch.

    Thanks in advance, AudioSexuals!

Sweet question! I've wondered about this for awhile too.Pinhead's voice is sick.

I think Cradle of Filth used an effect similar in a spoken piece in one of their songs if I remember correct.
It sounds like maybe a pitch shift and maybe a lil chorus or delay. Just a guess though.

Listening to the example it seems like they may have toned it down a lil in some movies vs others. The first few Hellraiser's you can really hear it. The devil's voice in Legend has a similar effect as well.

Yes!! Legend has it too. Good one.

Actually, cradle of Filth used Doug Bradley's voice throughout the Midian album. And they credited him as "Hellraiser invocation by DOUG BRADLEY, lead Cenobyte and Oracle of Midian".

    How cool.

I'll try what you suggested. Thanks!

Thanks Joem. very handy. I reckon I can try something like that without the mechanical bits, and presto!

The guy doing this is fucking funny. Great watch.

D-Music and Leviatate pretty much nailed it. It's a rather simple FX actually. Although, they surely used something like Eventide H3000 or better at the time to achieve it. Just use some pitch shifting a few semitones down and a voice doubler, or a flanger, or a fast chorus. Depending on what you like best. Voice doubler would sound the most similar to pinhead's voice, or any ADT emulation plugin https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_double_tracking. I would suggest the *mono* ADT/voice doubler/flanger/chorus. It is rather important to use mono FX on the voice because you will have it "all over the mix" otherwise. It will sound even more "authoritative" if you add a *little bit* of mono delay on it, too. Longish delay. Like 500ms or more, very subtly in the background, almost like an echo or reverb.

    Cheers!

Why even settle for cheap imitations Demon. :dunno:

Simply travel to some far off Asian country. Find a suitable back alley flea market shop and purchase yourself a little Chinese puzzle box.

Next, strip to the waist, sit in a circle of candles in a darkened room and figure, over MANY hours, how to unlock the puzzle box.

Voila, you`ll have the company of not only Pinhead, but also a number of other hellish Cenobites from whom you may sample the voices direct. Simples! At this point you may be forced to endure "Sweet pain such as cannot even be conceived", or, that old chestnut and party favourite, having your "Soul ripped apart!" Explaining that you only wish to grab some vocal samples in a grovelling manner MAY spare you such inconveniences. :beg: Or....... maybe not!!! :wow:

I must admit I find your, and certain others, fascination with all things "dark" more than a tad disturbing my friend. We each travel our own paths and are led to our own conclusions as to what we gravitate towards. I am OVERJOYED to be able to say my path has led me to the total opposite end of the spiritual spectrum. There just seems to be something of a fad running at present, here and over on AudioZ, with all things 666 related. I pray tis only a superficial dalliance for all involved. :dont:

God bless and lead you to His light.

D-Music sorta nails it. I think it's just shifting the formant down while holding the pitch. You can do this with any pitchshifter with pitch&formant control like zplane elastique, QuikQuak pitchwheel (but the quality isn't so great), etc.

Have a look at this document , look for the ones with formant control: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Arj2Nn-TKZ9adHN2c3A5NnBkNlp4LVlDZHdmUnBGRXc&usp=drive_web#gid=0

Add imaging to taste as per others' suggestions.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. very helpful.

Pilzy, thanks for your thoughts. I wonder if Pinhead would let me take out my microphone and laptop and allow me to record him. I wonder if he'd get pissed off if I ask for many takes, hahaha. Not a fad, but a way of life. If I could get the real box, I would actually! I have only an imitation one (doesn't move). Whatever path you choose is your choice and I wish you well in it, I don't judge it; and I appreciate the same in return. Now when it comes to "666": that's bible stuff, I don't believe in it.

junh, that's an awesome document, THANKS!

I think you're going to need either Doug Bradley or a Lament Configuration.

There is no light without darkness. Personally I don't believe in God or the Devil or other ideas of that sort. I'm more a man of cold hard facts. I do find much enjoyment in darker music such as Gothic and Industrial and I find that this topic is often used because it's controversial not because people worship Satan. There have been plenty of God worhsipping folk that have had no qualms about committing some pretty heinous acts from raping little boys to burning people at the stake. God worshiping doesn't mean good by default and the same on the other side of the spectrum. It's the same as positive emotions and the stigma surrounding negative ones.
I think it's oftentimes the emotions that are associated with these subjects such as anger and pain combined with a taste for the macabre more than anything. It's the same reason people love horror movies and I happen to be one of those people. Clive Barker is fucking ace. :break:

Now I can clearly see why we get along!

Throughout centuries "god-worshipping" has slowly turned into "god-fearing". I believe fear is the most effective tool of any church.

Another fact, if you follow the bible:

People killed by Satan, according to the bible: 10
People killed by God, according to the bible: 2000000+ (over two million)

Me too mate, well said. Fear is a great motivator because fear is primal and we all experience it, there are no opinions here. If you peel away the layers of the human condition you will undoubtedly arrive at this destination because our greatest fears drive most of our behavior. Some people use that to their advantage.

Humble apologies for kinda hijacking your excellent thread and inquiry Demon. I never meant to turn it into a theological debate.

I too used to LOVE all things horror related. Clive Barker`s depiction of hell, everyone suffers their own personal nightmare for all eternity, deeeeeeeeep! I used that quote sooooooooo often in my youth. What about the amazing Evil Dead? And the hilarious yet still disturbing Evil Dead 2? Then there were the oh so sweet zombie movies. George A Romero? GENIUS! Dawn of the Dead, the original, just amazing for the time.

I don`t tend to watch so much horror these days though, just doesn`t float my boat like it did it my teens and twenties.

Please don`t think I was judging you my friend, as you rightly say, each to his own. I was more just wondering about the current choice of nicks that abound of late. Satan, 666, Demon and the like. I think Catalyst has kinda answered that for me though, as his statement, "I do find much enjoyment in darker music such as Gothic and Industrial and I find that this topic is often used because it's controversial not because people worship Satan", makes much sense. I too loves a bit of Darksides vibe.

Hope the project with Pinhead is rolling along nicely Demon, would love a listen to the results....

    God bless.

It's all good mate. Like I said, each to their own. As long as we all have respect, all good.

A funny fact of why I am called Demon:

As a kid I was a little shit. We are three brothers and got to all kinds of mischief. My grandmother, being the german/south american mix she was, joked a few times saying that I must have been possessed by a demon. So when I would be up to some mischief she would say "this is not my grandson, this is demon here!" Of course everything was a joke and tongue-in-cheek. She liked joking like that.

The name kind of stuck. Even my car's number plate is DEMON :D

    Peace, mate.
