Hi, i need a new laptop thats strong at multi-browsing without stalling basically. And i need something that will last me 5 years.

i'm seeing laptop options and although ok price is a factor, i am still wondering if i should transition to apple (its now or.....i don't know when basically)

There's no reason why i should transition...other than if they "are better" or i don't know what

    I'm just asking

    thanks

What have you been using? So that someone can recommend something that's also better than your current machine. How much money do you want to invest? That would help narrow down the endless range of laptops. Do you make music with the DAW? I'm asking about CPU performance.

The sense of speed in processing is a relative thing. No matter how much money you spend and buy a more powerful system, after a while you will feel that it does not have the speed you need and you will think of another more powerful hardware.

now i have an ASUS Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU @ 1.80GHz i had it for a long time and its stalling

not for music...but since i need it to be powerful at multi browsing and not stalling it should be able to do music too.

pricewise...i want to know how much i need to pay for something that can last at least 4 years without stalling issues

Better resource management and finding the soft and versions that match your current system.
Whatever hardware you buy, you will find that it has weaknesses and may not be suitable for some software.

stay away from the 250-400 $ range. but also u dont need 1500 for a decent laptop. i'd say 600-800 $ and you will be more than happy for 5 years, and the performance will be stellar compared to what you have now. of course it depends how much money u have to burn. if you don't need the portability, consider the new mac mini m4

Only you know if you like Windows or want something else.

maybe just get a Mac and return it if you don't like it.

I was happy making EPs and Albums on my Dual Core, 4 GB, Logic Pro 8 and 9, Mac OS Panther, Tiger and Leopard once upon a time. Everything worked.

The "chase" is endless. It's ridiculous, and a joke.

    No.

This is just another distraction from actually working on music/audio.

    No, they're not better, it's a myth.

I have a powerful windows laptop specifically for audio:

    i7 9700k
    64 GB RAM
    GeForce 980M
    1TB Samsung Pro NVME
    2 x 2TB Samsung Pro SSD
    Windows 10 Pro

It's now five years old, NEVER crashes, absolutely stable and will run virtually any project I throw at it without having to freeze/render tracks (I compose, I like live MIDI).

I've worked on MACs in studios and experienced them crashing (dodgy plugins can crash ANY system), plus bugs also exist in MAC versions of software just like they do in Windows. I've seen associates MACs with numerous issues and artists MAC laptops repeatedly crashing in live situations.

The key to a stable Windows system is optimisation and bug-free software which does take a lot of work to achieve, more than most are prepared to engage in.

I'm an optimisation nutcase when it comes to setting up a system - if a Windows "feature" can be removed without affecting audio performance it will be. My laptop system has a total of 28 processes running at boot with a memory footprint of 1.3 GB - It literally posts in 3 seconds. The extent I've taken it to wouldn't suit most people though. There's no internet ability at all as it's been hacked from the system altogether, along with all the other detritis that MS leave littered throughout the system such as security "features", drivers for irrelevant hardware, pointless task schedules, menu clutter, blahblahblahblah, the list goes on and on.

I have documented all of the changes, and considered posting them on AS as I know that certain people are interested in that sort of thing. However, I decided not to in the end as it would open a massive can of worms, where people would apply changes that they don't understand, resulting in unbootable systems (I've been there LOTS) and I've simply not got the time to provide support, nor do I wish to see people distressed due to lost data. The key to system optimisation is to UNDERSTAND everything it is that you're doing beforehand, or at the very least be aware that there may be consequences and ALWAYS have a backup to revert to if it all goes tits up.

Anyhow, I digress as usual , back to the point.

I'm in no way saying that MACs are problematic per se, they're not and "possibly" more stable for the general user but the myth that they are somehow error free and a breeze to use is far from the truth. Personally I prefer the Windows OS and it simply isn't true that it is inferior to MAC OS when it comes to running an audio system, provided it is set up to do so (it's completely unnecessary to go to the extent I do to achieve a stable system, I'm just an incessant tweaker).

Microsoft, as a global company, produces a Windows for everyone and for every purpose, for every office and even our ATMs run on Windows. New mobile devices are added every year and Windows adapts the system accordingly. Since hacker attacks also endanger Windows users and online banking, Windows has drastically tightened security measures.

The system has become ever larger and more services and users have fewer and fewer rights to change anything directly. In addition, Microsoft needs user data because data is the new gold.

Since musicians are a small target group, you have to get involved yourself and set up your Windows yourself, as the fantastic @Haze already described, and deactivate or delete things you don't need. Back up your important data externally and make backups of the entire hard drive.
