If you work a lot with different AI models, it's hard to agree on a general statement like this. Depending on how the original input data was filtered and pre-classified, which criteria were analyzed to feed into the model and how the trained data is used, will all influence the quality of the result, and today you can already have just as many virtually perfect generations as you get obviously fake results.
Developers still have a lot to learn but because so many people are interested in the technology, it won't take long until we see much better results.
You can easily try that for yourself today on one of the free AI-based generative music sites. Find a good prompt that does what you mean, give it 10 attempts and you'll usually get at least 1 or 2 perfectly usable results.

Good point. But how to regulate it sensibly, protecting the rights of composers without taking the freedom and fun out of music making?

Nightmare this shit! when you have worked on a piece for maybe 6 months to a year! Then AI does it in 10 minutes! i suppose AI it's ok for medical reasons, but to piss on a music producers parade maybe can be disheartening. Or use it to your advantage! scary times ahead.

This is the petty theft in comparison, just a guy making vid2vids in his home, the analogy of a chiken robbery. Big models are all based on ramplant theft in plain light and is really easy to bring proof out of them. I hope all the lawsuits around the globe against the companies who made the models on public acess data (as "if its the reachable we can use it") win and a huge chunk of their profits gets distributed in justice.

Go to Claude and ask it to write a lyric in Kim Gordon style, or whatever musician of your liking. Go to Udio and use any of the "magic prompts" that are online so you can get the style of Depeche Mode.

For me this is going to be the theft of the millenia, were 4 companies stole and gatekeeped under a subscription all human intelectual labor without compensating anyone.

frankly, lawyers should be genuinely scared about AI lawsuit "DDoS" attacks - imagine receiving filed complaints, couple millions of them, go one by one because by law you can't throw them away

Something similar just happened with a friend. It wasn't a video of her playing, but actually her music videos. They filed a copyright claim against her, trying to steal her content. I've talked to some people and watched some videos and found out that bots stealing content on YouTube is pretty common now. It's disappointing, but it's what you expect. Machine learning is a great technology, but it's sad that it's often used to do shitty things like that.

The "AI" you all are on about in this thread and others isn't real AI, and won't be for quite some time... All of these trinkets that are marketed to catch the eye of the gullible shopper with the word "AI" on them are simply (for lack of a better term) more smart random number generators than anything related to actual AI. If the tech used was real AI it would cost far more $$ than what these dev's are schlepping it for now. Put some musical notes/chords in a can, shake the can around a bit and dump it on the table - that's pretty much all it amounts to...

As far as plagiarizing vs the "law" goes, the "law's" favor the ones with the most $$ who can afford the slickest attorneys in these kinds of cases. If that is you then congratulations. Most do not fit that category and wouldn't have a chance in hell of proving otherwise... Also, you have to prove intent in cases like these, and attempting to prove "intent" (beyond a shadow of a doubt) from something that was created with what amounts to a digital roulette wheel would be almost impossible to prove in court.

We are living the content creator bubble. AI is gonna burst that. And then content wont matter anymore because we will have an app like chatgpt that will be all of those channels we love at once.

Those who wastes their life watching SHORTS of PEOPLE (not musicians) playing covers should burn in hell (IMHO).

I also like fine arts (painting, illustration, comic, sculpture, etc.), but I don't see much of this kind of confusion in the AI image generation industry.
Why is there less of this confusion in the AI illustration industry?
Why does this debate only arise in the music industry?
Why has there still not be a DAW with fully-feature AI composition capabilities?

Actually it's affecting the artists the most. The fat cats in the "record companies" are the ones raking in the ca$h and calling all the shots at this point. Which is partially the reason why the content is so subpar compared to decades ago. It's gotten so crappy that it seems the only thing that is getting any industry push behind it is the hiphop scene which I personally loathe. Real artists with something real to say are left slaving away on "tours to nowhere" getting paid jack shit and real musicians have been replaced by 2 turntables and a microphone. It would be laughable if it weren't so sad...

Love that you really get how AI works.

I tell people who hate on AI in music but use GPT all the time that it’s the same thing. GPT is trained on the open internet just like music models. You can ask it for a Bible verse and it’ll give you the exact passage. But you can also use it to refine your own words and help shape what you're trying to say.

Music AI works the same way. You can feed it your song or elements and it can help expand, reimagine, and evolve your ideas. If you ask for something basic you’ll get something basic. But if you know how to finesse it you can make something fresh and unique.

This is exemplified in this article about "fake artists" (and fake music) on Spotify:

    https://open.substack.com/pub/tedgioia/p/the-ugly-truth-about-spotify-is-finally

The (supposedly-human) writer of the article seems to fail to grasp, or deliberately sidesteps, that A.I. is probably being used for generating music, "artists," and therefore, revenue, on the Spotify platform.

There are two curves that the general public is behind: that of what commercially-available A.I. platforms are capable of, and that of how advanced government-grade A.I. really is.

Assume that A.I. bots have scanned and been "trained on" the music you have posted anywhere online. An A.I. bot could even be trained to learn "you" and produce convincing derivative or original works in your established or extrapolated style of "you."

A.I. is already being used to produce visual content for television commercials and for music videos. Hollywood could go extinct in the next five years, as people generate "bespoke" short and feature films from A.I. prompts.

More about A.I. music on Spotify:

Politicians in most countries won't be doing jack shit for artists as they are not working for their constituents but rather for the deep pockets that fund their campaigns which of course are the leviathans which open wide their baleen and gobble up all the artist tiny plankton creations with which to call their own. After it's eaten and digested to their benefit what's left are huge whale sized turds that are marketed as mana from heaven, delectable and yummy.
