Then you just need them both on the same network, with sharing enabled.

 

That's what I'm trying to set up and can't work out, and wondering if someone was able to provide some idiot proof advice for. The tutorials I've found don't seem to work, and not sure if it's related to 24H2 on my laptop or something else as most of the tutorials seem outdated in terms of the settings to change and so on.

 

@Bunford, by the way, you've been suggested as co-pilot for Elon Musk's first Mars mission because you seem to be familiar with a lot of programs, software and cable connections.

Assuming this works the same way as on Windows 10:

Run fsmgmt.msc on the computer you want to share FROM (your desktop).

Go to the Shares folder on the left-hand side.

Leave the default shares alone (ADMIN$, IPC$, C$, D$, ..).

Right-click on the right-hand side pane -> New Share.
Add the folder you want to be accessible on the laptop.
Set offline mode to "not available offline".
Adjust permissions as needed.
Make note of the path (something like \\BUNFORDSDESKTOP\Temp).

On your laptop, open Explorer, go to This PC, expand the ribbon (the giant toolbar with the text and icons), click on Map a network drive.
Enter the path from earlier (\\BUNFORDSDESKTOP\Temp or w/e).
If it can't find your desktop, try with the desktop's LAN IP (\\192.168.2.125\\Temp or similar).

If it still can't find the desktop, check that on both ends (desktop and laptop) Settings -> Find -> sharing -> Manage advanced sharing settings -> discovery and file sharing are enabled for your network type.

If it still doesn't work after changing those, then you need to unbreak your Windows installation somehow (un-disable services, that kind of thing).

do watch thoroughly video in my post above, I'm pretty sure your problem is you didn't enable printer sharing (don't ask me why, it's not supposed to make sense)

I have Parsec remote desktop running on my machines to connect for example to my studio or gaming PC from everywhere in the house. So if I need some files I can simply edit file sharing settings without being at the PC itself. It is so fast that I can even play PC games remotely on my MacBook Air.

Some time ago I have used AnyDesk for this which has an inbuilt file transfer function to access all drives, but somehow it stopped working and I couldn't get it to work again. So now I use Windows file sharing and Parsec to remotely access the PC if I need another folder shared.

Edit: Parsec is also sharing the clipboard, so if you need to copy some challenge/response code to a Windows app while on Mac, you don't need Crossover or Parallels Desktop and simply run the App on a Windows PC in your network.

This second video fixed my issue. ANd I'd tried this, but led me down a bit of a rabbit hole and found the issues and difficulties were because my desktop did not have the Sharing options in the Properties menu for files, so adding this registry key fixed it!

1. Press Windows Key + R then type regedit and hit Enter to open Registry Editor. Run command regedit
2. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\Sharing
3. If the Sharing key is not present then you need to create this key. Right-click on PropertySheetHandlers and then select New > Key. Right-click on PropertySheetHandlers then select New and choose Key
4. Name this key as Sharing and hit Enter.
5. Now a default REG_SZ key will be automatically created. Double click on it and change its value to {f81e9010-6ea4-11ce-a7ff-00aa003ca9f6} and then click OK. Change the value of default under Sharing
6. Reboot your PC to save changes​
