Get a Mono-Maker plugin you like. You can use Sonalksis Stereo Tools, and quite a few of the Plugin Alliance plugins. Mono everything under 100hz using that one plugin you pick. Then test/listen for mono compatibility of everything above 100hz. Lots of people do this mono listening consistently during the production and mixing, so that there are not many surprises when the track is nearing completion. Or so the theory goes. This is also another good reason to pick your reference tracks carefully.

I just completed my referencing device with midi controller and LED feedback for everything. Two studios, club check and neutral headphone check, check against reference tracks, balance and level comparison, VU-meter and mono check all with dedicated buttons and no need to use the mouse.

Didn't think it would be a big deal but it's a game changer.

Any cheap midi controller and mapping a car or club check and mono check to a button I highly recommend.

Phil Spector use to run a wire out to his car in the parking lot and run it through his car radio to check the mix. It worked for the wall of sound. sometimes the simplest trick is the easiest and the most lifelike. If you want car sound, play it in a car.

This is what I want to do as well. But here it is sometimes -15 these days outside, sitting in the car even for 20 minutes in that weather is not very convenient, when I need to have 1 door open for the electricity cable as well. So having no other option at the moment, I am trying to find a good simulation. IF it is possible, of course.

Nothings better than the real thing -15 will make you make up your mind real fast if you like it or not...
i find 25 degrees F challenging these days, once it goes subzero I won't budge for anything less than a natural disaster, but thats just me. can't imagine life inside the Artic Circle, though I'm sure its often beautiful, though challenging..

the car thing is a moving target, literally once the car is underway the sound is constantly battling outside noises, inside noises and road noise.

In ye olde days a lot of studios had little low power FM transmitters so they could actually transmit over the radio to a car in the parking lot.

That is considered. But if I can mimic the car circumstance, and can at least mix real time, not needing to rush down to the car and insert the USB stick after every small change, that is already a leap forward.

Well there's your problem, you don't want to try to assess the sound of your mix on other platforms every little step of the way. You have to get to where you can produce a decent mix, then test it, then tweak it. I suspect you may be creating a huge amount of time waste and frustration for yourself if you're assessing things this deeply after every little change.

Hmm. I imagine you go to a studio, and start telling to the engineer: 'I suspect you may be creating a huge amount of time waste and frustration for yourself if you're assessing things this deeply after every little change.'

Do you know this is how music is produced? You start turning the knob, and listen which level you prefer and leave it there. I wonder what you are doing in this forum if you have not noticed it yet during the years? This is kind of 2 year old kids level if you did not notice this so far.

I am very glad we start going down to the level where we are debating about turning knobs, switching buttons, etc. When do we start discussing how to pee or eat with spoon?

If you're trying to check your mix in a car environment all the way through doing it, as you work on it as opposed to a final check afterward... then the rest of this post will serve no purpose except to be inflammatory... I suppose I'm out of this one, have fun. Cheers!

Thank god you are out. Especially because I don't even understand what you mean by now: check the mix in car, final check, not check...inflammatory? What??? Because I am looking for softwares like SoundID etc? That is inflammatory? Did you already emailed Sonar, describing this to them, that their software is inflammatory? Jesus... I see you are struggling to write something to try to ridicule me, try harder than that. It is very low level.

this has inspired me, I think I'm going to build a studio inside a car.

Flying down to Rio was a highly unlikely series of events that is very entertaining and features the debut of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire working together. Its a great bit of escapism. One thing that tickled my funny bone, was Fred Astaire plays a composer who has a piano in his plane. its a single engine circa 1933, and a piano has a cast iron sound board that has the wires strung on it. they are heavy, a airplane of this vintage would never been able to have a piano, but hollywood magic and it does.

    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0024025/

so if Fred can have a piano in a plane, an itty bitty plane, why not a studio in a car?
a laptop, a pair of monitors, and a pair of speakers and some high octane gasoline and its a mobile hit machine.

BTW Fred was a multi-instrumentalist as well as a singer/dancer/actor. he played piano and drums and here he probably fakes playing an accordian..

i just want to get into this early and state I usually use a fork unless my fingers will work, soup can be sipped as can most fluids (not antifreeze) and I feel spoons are a non-starter and a distraction to digestion and food in general.

You could also build a studio in a mobile toilet. Try that as well. It would be fun. Post a photo as well when ready, we want to see it!

    BOTH ! :)

you could take the roof and windows off and run them along side each other.... or have six of them form a circle with the red car (yes there's a seventh car and its a red one) in the middle and we have surround sound.

instant in-car mix check with "modelled" surround sound... and the cars could also be driven by models :)

Anyway, what is the car audio system? Is it anything technically special? Do speakers for the car differ from speakers used in, I don’t know, wherever?
