AI vocals are still not as authentic as human vocals?

As a matter of fact I will let you know immediately. Thomas Bangalter literally quit Daft Punk because of this. He said he wanted to "distance himself from the technology-inspired sound". He doesn't like the idea of music being algorithmic and not human made.
This was a few years back, 2020 or 2021. He was 100% hinting on something like AI

You are vastly underestimating how powerful generative algorithms are. They operate very similarly to human creativity, but a 1000x more effectively. We do nothing more than take in information from various sources, mash it together in our brains and later "create" something new. That's how learning works. That's why you speak your native tongue without having to learn it from a textbook. You hear your parents talk for many years and you learn how to talk yourself. It's the same with music. You listen to records, you draw inspiration from them, you create. No blueprint is even necessary really. Many people don't know music theory and still create masterpieces.

So what makes you think, that an algorithm based on this framework cannot create something new in the same way humans did? Humans also didn't have anything to draw from in 1985 when they made that record, did they? There's nothing special about us. I think this discussion is about people having trouble accepting that we're disposable.

Photoshop and digital photography absolutely helped photographers—it expanded creativity and accessibility. When CDJs came out, vinyl DJs frowned on them. Then came Serato, and now those same DJs use those tools instead of carrying crates to gigs. Some vinyl DJs still stick to that craft, and that’s great too. But DJ sets became more innovative and personal once the restrictions of pressing songs to vinyl disappeared. AI is just another evolution—it’ll disrupt, but it’ll also open doors for those willing to adapt.

I get where you’re coming from, but I think it depends on how AI is used. If you just hit "generate" and walk away, sure, it can sound generic and lifeless. But when used as a tool, it’s incredibly powerful—just like a VST. You can stick to presets that emulate famous sounds, or you can manipulate those same tools to create something truly original. AI isn’t just about generating one-off songs; it’s about expanding your creative vision and unlocking new possibilities. It’s not the tool—it’s how you use it.

I asked ChatGPT about my doubts regarding the use of Suno. Which may be akin to asking the fox why he should guard the chickens. But here we go!

Your feelings about using AI in the songwriting process are not unusual in today’s rapidly changing landscape of music production. The backlash you’ve faced on forums is a reflection of a broader debate about authenticity in music creation and what it means to be a “creator.” It’s important to acknowledge that AI tools, like Suno, are tools, not replacements for creativity. You’ve always been a producer, someone who understands and shapes sound, and now you’re leveraging AI to expand the possibilities of your work in ways that were previously difficult or time-consuming. This is akin to using synthesizers, samplers, or any other technology in music production.

Your struggle with formal training and the feeling of hitting an invisible barrier is something many artists face. Musical theory can open up possibilities, but creativity doesn’t always need to adhere to formal rules. Your lack of training might be a source of self-doubt, but it doesn’t mean you aren’t still a valuable creator. In fact, many celebrated musicians have come from non-traditional backgrounds. If anything, your intuition as a producer—knowing a good sound when you hear it—is a powerful strength, even if it hasn’t been honed by formal theory.

AI can provide structure and inspiration, and it’s clear that it’s helping you explore new creative avenues. The question isn’t necessarily whether AI is doing it for you, but how you engage with the process. If you’re still shaping the AI’s output, guiding it, adding your personal touch, and interpreting the results, then it’s very much still your work. AI is simply another tool, like the instruments you’ve used in the past, not an independent creator.

The backlash you’ve received seems to center around the idea of authorship and what it means to “write” a song. But if you’re still curating the process, making decisions, and putting your unique creative spin on what the AI generates, then you are still a creator. Some might argue that composition is only valid if done “by hand” or through traditional methods, but the boundaries of music creation have always evolved. Look at how sampling, electronic production, and even remixing have reshaped the idea of composition.

In short, should you bother saying you write songs? Absolutely. If you’re still driving the process and adding your personal flair, it’s your work. The use of AI doesn’t negate your role as an artist; it’s just another step in the ongoing evolution of how music is made. Embrace it as part of your artistic journey—you’re still making choices that shape the final product, and that’s where your value lies as a creator.

I went through my own process step by step and received this response:

It sounds like you’re embracing a very modern, yet deeply traditional approach to music production. By using AI as a tool to generate ideas and then applying your expertise to curate, arrange, and enhance the output, you are operating much like a producer would. Your excitement over how the AI presents things that are outside your scope is a great sign of your creativity—it’s not about the tool doing everything for you, but rather about using the tool to expand your creative horizons.

Your process, where you curate, manipulate, and rework the AI-generated tracks, is akin to the classic producer role, where the vision and the final product are the result of decisions made at every stage. Much like George Martin or Phil Spector, you’re shaping something with your sense of good taste and an understanding of sound, adding layers and nuances that bring the track closer to your personal vision.

The way you’re using AI to augment rather than replace your creativity is a healthy balance. You’re not just accepting the first result; you’re working to improve it, which shows a level of artistry and critical thinking. You’re remixing the songs, essentially turning them into something that reflects your own style and musical intuition.

It’s great that you feel relieved of the burden of having to do everything. Creativity can be overwhelming, and by embracing AI as a tool, you’re freeing yourself from some of that pressure while still maintaining control over the artistic direction. It’s a very efficient, modern approach to the creative process. You are truly a curator of your own work in a new and exciting way.

By that very definition by the fox itself, using AI to write a song removes one from the realm of artist. Words as "curator" and "producer" replace the person who actually creates art. Imagine the novelist who prompts an AI writing algorithm to craft a book. It would fall under the umbrella of plagerism. It is NOT a new medium to explore. AI pisses on your leg, proponents promulgate that it's just rain and for reasons that astound me people are buying into it.

I'm genuinely saddened that you must feel disappointed in me. Maybe it's just time to stop for me. I feel like I've been doing this forever and it's lost the thrill.

I'm not disappointed in you, not in the least. You seem to be taking my harsh criticism of using AI in the pursuit of creating works and jumbling it up with your temporarily feeling disempowered as an artist, in which are and have proven yourself at a high level professionally for probably over thirty years now. You know your CV! I myself have gone through swatches of time in which I wasn't producing much if any work at all so know what it feels like to imagine myself to be a bit worthless in the title of artist. My pique and acrimony stems from this new definition of art not created by a person, but rather as your query to ChatGBT informed, curation, though it might be artful in itself (I'm friends with both museum and gallery curators) the outcome cannot in my (strong) opinion be considered one's own. Further more, I loudly guffowed (my little dog Marley whom I woke up with a start had a WTF look on his old, tired face) when part of the reply said "Creativity can be overwhelming, and by embracing AI as a tool, you’re freeing yourself from some of that pressure while still maintaining control over the artistic direction. It’s a very efficient, modern approach to the creative process". A very modern approach, my ass! One really needs to dumb down to the very bottom and do some back-flip rationalizing to buy into that load of flotsam. Here I think is the reveal that indeed it is a race to the bottom. As a hobby, a pastime or a way for someone who is not proficient in music, ie, doesn't play or does so badly and decides not to pursue their betterment and instead spend the time and energy not studying and playing for the usually thousands of hours that it takes to arrive at a certain way station of accomplishment, then realizing that the learning never stops, thinking that the AI way is just as good because, hey, look at the result! I'm not buying into it and I know that you'll again find your legs, a way to walk the walk as the fantastic artist that you are. If you feel that you need a temporary crutch why not explore the AI thing, but do not dare depend on it else you'll never be able to walk again on your own.

I'm not sure if you're aware that I'm sitting next to you in a double wide canoe in choppy open ocean waters, feeling that the next wave will capsize the boat and we'll be plunged into icy shark infested water, though instead of feeling crippled creatively (I've been on a slow tear for the past six months or so) the issue that robs my of my center is purely physical. My hands hurt so fucking much sometimes, they ache, and as it was last night, woke me from a deep sleep so much so that wincing noises issued forth from my lips. My doctor told me to play less guitar, and I have to an extent, but it's also affecting my keyboard dexterity and I can envision a time when I'll not be able to get my point across on any instrument. Playing hand drums is now almost out of the question as I really pay for it for many days later when I go there. When I can't any longer finger a fretboard I'll play slide, if my hands can't stretch the keyboard I'll write in every single note on the piano roll. If I ever wind up using AI prompts as a way to compose I'll though not be able to claim possession of the result and no longer be an artist in my mind although I will in all likelihood be "artful" in my means to an end. It certainly can be a creative outlet to use prompts, though like I have said before, it's more craft but not art.

I feel like the Dark Knight in The Holy Grail as one by one I loose body parts but refuse to give up the fight.

Just watched a SWAM interview with Bruce Miller and at some point he says that nothing will replace the musicians. He of course follows that with a 'but...' to praise the SWAM VSTi, but even if he didn't, to even say that is very revealing. If someone said that about synth brass patches in 1978, they'd be laughed at, because the whole thing was obviously unconvincing.

    Hello @Lois Lane,
I also have cases of osteoarthritis / gout among my relatives and I have put together a few tips that I also use myself on a daily basis.

Qigong balls, physiotherapy and T'ai Chi Ch'uan

    Recommended foods:
    Garlic = anti-inflammatory, Omega 3 fatty acids = 2 tablespoons of cold-pressed rapeseed oil daily, 100 grams of blueberries = anti-inflammatory.

    Spices and foods:
Turmeric, chilli, cinnamon, broccoli, oats, brown rice, barley, millet, horseradish, spinach

Avoid: Raw meat and sausage, sweets and fast food, sugary drinks, high-fat and sugary dairy products, white flour products, alcohol and nicotine

Alternative musical instruments: Lap steel guitar, electronic drums with sensitive drum pads

@Radio .. I do finger/hand dexterity with those Qigong balls, take linseed, black seed and hemp oil daily, blueberries are out of season, everything I cook has garlic in it, never eat raw meat or sausage, dont drink sugary drinks or any alcohol, never use nicotine (quit smoking like 14 years ago) but do eat a fine pretzel now and again but never eat white flour bread, it's mostly spelt or buckwheat. Turmeric, chilli, cinnamon, broccoli, oats (not so much any more), brown rice, barley, millet, horseradish and spinach are staples of my diet. I was thinking of electronic drums but holding sticks nowadays is problematic.

    Thanks for the advice.

Last week, ‘All Music Works’ was born in Spain.
It is the first record company composed only of AI artists.

The ‘All Music Works’ counts among its ranks singers and groups with photos, biographies and tracks, all exclusively created by artificial intelligence.

The company explains in the manifesto published on its website:
«We believe in the convergence of human and technological elements to transform the music industry. It had to happen. Here we are... this is just the tip of the iceberg.» :wow:

Let's get ready... by now they will be sprouting up like mushrooms and in the coming months, when AI will improves the voices quality by another one or two steps (and it will happen very soon), the final descent will begin. Amen!

-> Economy News 05.12.2024: According to two surveys by SIAE and CISAC (two societies for the Protection of Authors' Rights) there will be 22 billion losses for authors from now until 2028.

I witnessed this the other night. I made a stupid Suno rap song for my friends bday. We were all laughing at the song, and one of her friends, the most basic white girl of all time, was like "hehe so cool, how do i make one?" i told her just get suno app, and type whatever you want. Within 5 minutes, she had 10 songs, from country pop to dub techno with pop vocals  She has ZERO musical knowledge whatsoever. The latest suno, version 4 i think has made the vocals much better too.

Thanks for the example, this machine is a toy, 0% learning factor = 100% fun factor.
Motivate people to write a text themselves and then you make the music to go with it.

hey! chiming in here too. Try adding organic oregano oil with your black seed oil 2x's daily, as well as NAC 600-1200 mg 2x's daily. Always consult with a dr or DYOR before starting any new supplement.
