I think behind him it has to be an E-mu Emulator 3, you can see only parts of it but the greyish housing with these buttons and the characteristic "steps" on the left side above the disk drive look much like it. It was built from 1987 to 1991 so it fits and it was very expensive being one of the first stereo 16 bit samplers.

Right on the dime  Yes, a true legend of the metal guitar. Sadly another that died young.
Hmmm... I really don't know. You could be mine... I mean right :winker:
But I guess for composing, although it's always advisable, you don't need to be a good player. There's quite a few Guns N Roses songs with piano, despite not being difficult. I remember Estranged too, for example. They nailed that one live.

A bit irrelevant to the OP's question , but this was actually a pretty good cover. It contains the same melancholy vibes Also the video.

    hell yea.
The thing about November Rain is Axl composed it many years before the song ever took a direction, he didn't know what to do with it or if it was any good. Everyone was always telling him dude it sounds amazing don't do anymore with it. Have the band compose around it and it's a masterpiece. So they said everywhere he went he'd play it but didn't know anything else lol.

I wish they would've released Estranged first instead of November Rain so it could've gotten the recognition that November Rain got. By the time Estranged was released people were kind of over the Illusion albums. I think Estranged is a much better song. Not that November Rain is bad by any means...I just think Estranged is one of the best songs of all time. It is basically perfect.

Also, I think Axl is a fairly competent piano player. In concert he noodles around a little bit and he sounds decent. Even though he played it on the album, for some reason Axl never played piano on Estranged live.

I think that since they released a double album they only had so much content they could make mainstream. Hell if every song was a hit then no other bands would get airplay lol

Never seen that before, absolutely blown away! I knew about the synth string stuff, which is incredible, but for that kid to play all the parts, impressive!!

It was, especially by people in the area.
I had a friend, older than me by quite a few years, who knew him in passing through a chic Axl was dating down there (my friend was a bouncer/protector at a local club where the girl worked.) He also jammed with the other members of G'nR, since there were a handful of venues that had open mics where you could just wander in and play, usually in the vicinity of the Whiskey. Axl wasn't really into that part of the scene, but he could play piano fairly well, which he learned growing up in the church. I could easily argue that being able to play songs at the drop of dime—no matter the instrument, piano, guitar, whatever—is a poor gauge for musicianship. Being a musician doesn't necessarily mean you're a natural performer, and even if you happen to either be fine with, or have become comfortable performing in front of people, that doesn't mean you know how to play every song that people throw out at you, even if you happen to know the song. And believe that artists get some wild requests sometimes, with people expecting you to be an obligatory and grateful jukebox.

Axl used to buy those American flag jackets that he wore in concert from me when I managed The Antique Boutique in NYC, sending in his tour manager to pick them up, but the guy never mentioned Axl's piano chops so I can't really comment on it.

Anything bringing in piles of cash, like G'nR was at the time, I could see Lars gravitating towards—that story checks out. :hahaha:

Yes, big truths. Estranged was underrated and "Use Your Illusion II" was bloated. I mentioned it earlier they nailed it live, but it already stood out in the album.

I guess they aimed too high with the double-vinyl duration and ran out of ideas n the second. To the point of putting the same exact song twice (one in every album). That nice ballad "Don't Cry". Hey, but with brand new lyrics! One of the biggest "WTF!" in my life lol

Bro I was wowed when I saw that like jaw on the floor, he played it all from ear and tab the chords too. If you look in the description he even played the exact same instruments that were used except the synth. He played a midi controller.
