Interesting points are made. I am planning on buying some monitors in the next few months and this had definitely raised some questions for me. He says build your own monitors (and he's selling a course on how he made his...). Thoughts?

Back in the day i used to build speakers, scoops, 18" Woofers with crossovers for the reggae systems!.. But in today's standards you need proper studio monitors!! Yamaha HS5 for a starter or there's budget monitors https://uk.presonus.com/collections/monitors?rb=o

While what I will say might be in fun, it is basically true. These days, if people trust everything they see on YouTube or hear on any media channel, then they may as well believe that fish can climb trees.
It is about what's right for you. Personally though, I'd hate it if I saw a fish climb a tree because that would do my head in and I wouldn't trust my own judgement anymore.

 

I just checked out his channel and all the content is so nerdy and provocative. If you enjoy watching channels like this, you are just wasting your life.

 

this is one of the cliches sound engineers use, it contributes to the quasi-diversity of market where "each microphone has its own voice". so that marketlogoists can invent bicycle over and over again, selling the same junk but renamed, re-painted and "repurposed" to be "more accessible for the broad public".

however, it won't hurt diving into what appears to be a "creators vision". Engineers who create sound systems don't just "follow their ears", they use sophisticated systems of knowledge in order to deliver something that we later percieve in its givenness. that's the point of technical reviews and measurements - to understand something on a level deeper than describing sound as "sweet", "salt", "punchy" or "airy", whatever that means. how can you trust your ears if they are untrained? most of people nowadays are deaf because of the constant noise floor they're exposed to.

also Harman curve (an average of preferred frequency response) helps everyone to be on the same wave. so that we hear things the same, and can better understand changes we make to sound. of course there are also specifics of individual hearing, nevertheless, that's the whole point of digital revolution in sound - standartizing so no more "magic" could stop people from mass-producing the music.

my opinion, leave the magic where it should be - in music. technical is technical, and it needs to be approached on a technical level.

 

While this dude usually has a general point that is true, most, if not all of time, he hangs on to very esoteric explanations and concepts that no one in the business cares about. A great example is his video on clippers: while it does make sense, his concept of a clipper is not what everyone else thinks of a clipper, so his point means jack shit if it's not a concept that is applied in real life. Same for his newest video on speakers, he's raising points that even if true, doesn't mean shit because it does not stop anyone from putting out records bigger and better than his stuff. Same for David from MixbusTV, he can cry as much as he wants that you need to mix in speakers instead of headphones, while reality has proved that no, you don't need speakers to mix a good record. This is the landscape of current "educational" content: people ran out of things to teach, so now the whole point is to make you into one of their disciples and have you mix and master their own way. The APMastering dude is more interested in getting a cult following than actually putting in practice the "truths" he speaks out.

 

Sure, build your own speakers. Do lots of research. Get the right tools and building materials. Start building whatever design you want to build. When you're done building, put the speakers in the measurement chamber and run a few signals through them. After the measurement, take the speakers and throw them in the trash. Then start again. It's a really interesting hobby if you don't have any other hobbies.

 

Define a "good record" to me, chum.

 

A mix that translates into other devices and generally sounds like how you expect music to sound. Simple as that.

If you're looking for examples, there are plenty on Google. I'll purposefully not cite any because someone will just say "this one sucks" and nothing comes out of these discussions since mixing is more subjective than you might think.
