but yamaha has the source code, while the DSP56300 doesnt have a source, so they ported the source code and didnt optimize it? thats what im thinking!

another question is - can you reduce the CPU usage with some kind of single mode? bcs i doubt most of us dont really need a workstation synth in their DAW, only want to use one instance of something and not want to go fully polyphony.

cpu usage is already directly tied to polyphony/number of parts, if needs are limited, cpu use will be limited as well. even if this took 50% with 8 polyphony with the ascension patch, most of my testing was 5%ish

I think you have to have a modern, fast CPU!
Windows system requirements [CPU] : Intel® Core™ i5 (4th generation) or higher [RAM] : 8 GB RAM or more

I copied the following text from the Internet:

The integration of MIDI 2.0 and a number of UI revisions for an improved workflow take the MONTAGE M synths to the next level. The Expanded Softsynth Plugin v2.0 enables in-depth editing and increases the number of usable MONTAGE M by several times, depending only on the processing power of the DAW.

One of the most valuable features of the MONTAGE M is the availability of the Expanded Softsynth Plugin: a comprehensive virtual version of the synth for use in the DAW software. The ESP is not just an editing aid - it is the actual sound engine with all parameters in plug-in format. This means that each user can use as many MONTAGE M in their productions as their DAW can handle. Each instance acts independently of the hardware synth, but can communicate with it. This communication between the virtual and physical MONTAGE M versions has been significantly expanded and improved with the update to version 2.0.

Not to mention, why haven't they considered making a collection of virtualized legacy synthesizers based on their more sought after hardware in the same vain of the Korg Legacy Collection? Namely the SY85-SY99 (I am aware that an unofficial but fully-fledged SY-99 emulator known as SWAY is hopefully underway for release), Yamaha XG/MU80 (like an updated Windows version, as well for Mac/Linux too), the Motif series or even the VL-1 for goodness sake!? They clearly have the schematics and source code buried in some old hard-drives somewhere to make this a reality!

Granted, if we were to actually such plugins, they'd be riddled with performance issues for a dozen version updates of them.

My point is Roland and especially Korg had lept on the VA/legacy bandwagon long ago and have still been riding high! Why can't Yamaha follow along?

the Funny reaction is not for your thread, but for luaghing at yamaha.

yeah they totally over slept that trend and the craving audio people have for 90s/00s synth stuff as emulations.

they could have clearly cashed in on this, but maybe since its not the major branch of income for yamaha, they didnt care?!

you are right: those plugins would be a mess for CPU performance, but maybe hey, the montage plugin would be better as result from that?

Or if this runs good with the montage, maybe we will see more in the future?

but still, who would want a plugin, which uses 20% on a modern CPU? after all nobody would want that, if you can maybe find better way to create something with plugins, which create similar sounds?

i still would think a CPU from 2022 is a modern CPU for this day and its just sad, how bad the plugin performs there.

i5 4th generation WTF, thats like stoneage old ...

Actually, if you had the money you would buy the hardware. Yes, they all have to make money and do things like hardware emulation that they wouldn't have done before because users wouldn't have bought it. Today, things are produced no matter what. You can see that with Arturia, first they make successful models, Prophet V, and in the end all analog soft synths are digitized to make money...!

With Korg Wavestate, for example, my CPU went to the roof and I then deleted the plugin again. I asked myself why they produce something that doesn't work properly, well they have to make money and many people have the fast, expensive processors...!

Then I'm not part of the target group. Now I have a faster CPU and no more problems with CPU spikes. But why should you buy a faster CPU every year just to play some of these plugins? Doing without is probably the biggest issue and difficult to resolve mentally. After all, we want to be part of the progress.

An AWM2 only, 1 part patch (Tenor soft Legato for example but many others are the same), played monophonically (1 note at a time), takes 15/20% of RT CPU of my system.

I'm talking about the same patches that I can play on my Motif XS7 where I can play 16 of them at the same time for a total of 128 voices.

If I just duplicate the same simple 1 part patch for 15 times for a total of 16 instances my CPU usage goes to 84% with 1 track record armed and playing 1 voice and if I record arm all tracks and I play 1 voice (16 voices in total spread on 16 tracks) my CPU goes to 97% and it's unplayable.

Motif XS was released in 2007.

I guess that the DSP inside my Motif XS is not more than 10x more powerful (and I'm being conservative) that a i5 9600k CPU but I could be missing something

My system is WIN/BIOS optimized, DPC latency under 100 microseconds, RME drivers (128 buffer at 44.100 SR) so it's not a problem of system optimization or poor soundcard drivers etc...

I think that this vst could do better in terms of CPU optimization but I will use it pretty much for some sounds that I used on my XS if it will not be optimized, so it's not a real issue for me but I wish this could be better.

Working on a closed system like a workstation can be limiting but it can stimulate creativity and give a sense of coherence to the whole and most of all you can work FAST if you know it inside/out

Has anyone compared the R2R version with the original one first released on the forum? In terms of CPU, or is it the same thing?

Hello, this is my first post for this nice forum!
    Greetings from Greece!!!

I am posting a video showing my system's CPU and RAM usage (See the Windows task manager window at the top right corner) with one instance of Montage M ESP 2.0 running inside my Studio One, as requested!

My CPU is 5900X using eco-mode 95Watt (PBO set)
My memory is 32GB Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB edition (3600)
    My Mobo is an X570
My audio interface is an old Lexicon Lambda
    I am running Windows 10
DAW is running on ASIO mode 24/48

    Cheers!!!!

Sorry to hear about your loss :(

OK you just need to right-click on the column header to show RT CPU.
( It does not show in a column, but will show in the window. Yes that is kind of weird.)
    My setup:
    Mobo: MSI H270 PC MATE
    CPU: i7-7700 (non-K)
    Memory: 32 Gig GSkill RipJaws DDR4 2400
Audio Device: Presonus AR-8 -or- ASIO link Pro-->Asio4ALL-->Realtek ALC887 (Although it seems neither setup is better than the other in this).

Yes shit happens with the HD loss. Craziest part is that it was working until I rebooted my pc then a BIOS message came up to back up my data before a loss. I don't now how to back up a drive if it's totally dead so what a BS message is that. LOL

Yes it was set to RT CPU.

Strange my Audio interface is the Presonus 2626 Thunderbolt 3. I don't know if that matters or not.

I would not use the Realtek drivers they are higher in CPU just try you ASIO drivers from Presonus AR-8.

I am using the Quantum 2626 ASIO drivers.

As far as RT value goes, what I said was: "OK you just need to right-click on the column header to show RT CPU."
I do not see the RT value in any of your posts.
I am not sure, but I know it can be set to display, by clicking on that column header.
The RT CPU is what was chosen to compare, and without that, we are not comparing the same things.

And I have used different drivers, including my Presonus, but none seem to affect the RT CPU range, which has short peaks of around 67%

It was in the first one which show the second graph as RTL

But here is another try for you
Mine is nowhere near you CPU usage. It really might be your audio interface drivers though.

    RTL? What is that?

Anyway in your first post i see no RT CPU or RTL (whatever that is).
In your second post with 2 screenshots, again there is no RT CPU shown.

Anyway this is now good info to compare. Thanks.

I miss typed it was supposed to be RT not RTL. The first screen shot has 2 graphs on it the first one and the second one.
The second green bar is the RT CPU.

It says right there RT CPU. But either way I agree it's good to compare different PC.

That is really weird. I can not see that screenshot in any of the previous posts.
Could you give a link to your message with that screenshot?
Perhaps I am not able to view that for some reason, or perhaps you intended to attach but did not.
    Link, please?

The Motif XF Soundsets are included in the Montage M (they have their own Category) so there is no need in releasing a Motif Plugin.

I owned the Motif XS8 and there was no real USB integration into your DAW like on the Montage M. If you wanted something in your DAW you had to record it via Midi Out into an Interface.

For the SY85 or SY99 your best option are the Gospelmusician ones for UVI Falcon.

The Montage M Expanded VST is only meant for People owning the Hardware and not sold seperatly as Standalone and Yamaha doesn't have any Emulations of Old Synths like Korg or Roland. (But they both don't have newer Stuff like Phantom or Nautilus in VST Format like the Montage M).

By the Way the biggest Part of the Price Point of such High End Synth Workstations is the Hardware if you play on the 88 Keys Version at an Music Store you will know what i mean.

I believe they want people to buy Hardware but in my opinion thats a totally outdated Way nowadays. Maybe they overthink there Policy in the Future.

The Montage M Plugin is consuming 35-40% on my i5-7300U Pro which is fine for me since i'm using a Single instance and than export stuff to WAV.

By the Way the Ghost FM Synth Plugin uses Way more CPU for me than the Montage M an is said to be CPU friendly.

They could have done better if they would have choosen the C++ Route to make it better Performance wise, but they decided to use Juce with no Multicore Support in 2024. (I can't believe something like this even exist in the era we live in and is that popular)

I don't understand why big companies use such an crap they could easily hire an Professional Programmer and i bet they already have some on there Payroll.

The Point is that the Stuff on your XS works like a charm is because everything is programmed to run smooth on the internal processor which you can't find nothing about. But the Processor is definitly something single Core (below is stated that even the normal Montage only has a Single Core ARM CPU) and not nearly as powerful as your i5.

The Montage M is running ARM Multicore Processor by Texas Instruments and got a huge upgrade over the Montage:

Yamaha gave the Montage M a major league host CPU: Texas Instruments Sitara AM5728BABCXA. The Sitara is multi-core:

    Dual-core ARM Cortex-A15 MPU (1.5 GHz)
    Dual TMS320C66x floating-point VLIW DSP (750 MHz)
    2 x dual-core ARM Cortex-M4 co-processors (213 MHz)
    Dual-core PowerVR SGX544 GPU (532 MHz)
This is a major step up from the single core 800MHz ARM in the original Montage. The Sitara is given twice as much primary memory than the original.
