FanControl seems like such a nifty little tool, especially for audio and music-based computers as it enables full control over all of the computer's fans and is totally customisable. That said though, I am completely at a loss as to how I should optimise this app for my system to lean towards quietness, but also to avoid my hardware from getting too hot.

Any other users here with any suggestions, or any curves or setups worthy sharing?

 

I use "HWMonitor" and "CrystalDiskInfo" especially in midsummer to check the temperatures and whether the case fans are even running. In midsummer, I just want to know if the CPU cooler can do it or if I have to point a fan at the PC from outside. So far, however, it has never been this warm.

At 28-30 degrees room temperature, the Noctua with its 1.5 KG cools the CPU perfectly.
I have installed 4 fixed fans from BeQuit with 900 RPM.

The temperature of the CPU cooler and the limit temperature - if the PC overheats, it automatically shuts down - is also displayed in the BIOS.
I think you can make more bad things with fan controls than better.

I installed an Akasa fan controller with a display on my second PC. There are 4 fans connected to it. It shows the internal temperature of the case. I have set all 4 Scythe fans to 800 RPM. If a fan has failed, it starts beeping!

 

I used Argus Monitor for fan control. I really just set it up to keep my hardware alive as long as possible, as I really don't have to worry too much about noise. It's generally quite quiet unless I'm playing a pretty heavy/intensive game (which isn't too common these days).

yup, mandatory piece of software for every PC build with motherboard and fans that support it (some nasty aftermarket PCs like HP don't always support fan speed sensors+control though!)

this is our setup basically, it's dead silent when idle (loudest thing in room being Kali Audio IN-8 monitors idle self hiss)



few tips:
1) do take time and properly map/label all the fans and temperature sources you want to use
2) before tinkering with any curves, observe how your PC components behave/heat under load (until you enable anything, you can see speeds, temps etc.. in FanControl) to get an idea what limits you want to fit in
3) curves are defined in relation to temperature source, NOT fan noise
4) as you can see in my example, you can add "Mix" curve with "Max" function - a rule of decision which source temperature curve to apply (on case fans in the example)
5) for maximum silence (which I highly recommend), you can set thresholds to keep all fans off until certain temperature is reached (basically what Apple does)
6) properly calibrate (and use your ears) to figure out minimum fan speed/% for fans to keep consistently spinning (can be anywhere from 15 to 40 % with most fans) and adjust curves to reflect that (for me it's around 25% on Arctic P14 PWM and P12 PWM fans)
7) check specific hardware guidelines to set temperature limits for max fan speeds to avoid PC crashing due to overheating (for me 100% fans kick in when it's 75°C on i7-5820K cpu OR 85°C on GTX1080Ti graphics card)
8) don't overlook the "hysteresis" (in graphs/curves) to even out fan speeds on fast temperature fluctuations, for ex. I use conservative 3°C hysteresis with 2 seconds response time BUT only on "way down" (=fans slowing down) and ignored at min/max temps
9) depending on where you live, you might want to configure different setups for winter and summer seasons depending on ambient temperatures in your room/studio

it's a bit of a rabbit hole, I admit, but definitely worth it, I especially love how such free app is independent from all the manufacturers (fuck you ASUS with your outdated AI Suite, and fuck you MSI Afterburner with your app unable to set graphics fan curves together with case fans)

 

Don't be stingy with air and cooling, the cooler it is in your PC, the longer your components will last, especially the capacitors in your PC.

 

Just dial in a proper Curve for the fans..

-FanControl didn't work for me in linux/Debian,
but CoolerControl (appimage) and CoreCtrl (for AMD GPUs) do..

I'm controlling Case fans with Linux stock "pwmconfig" (so it's more deeply rooted on the system),
GPU fans with CoreCtrl (looks like they know what they're doing..)
CPU fans with CoolerControl (taking control from BIOS with a similar config..)

CoolerControl also serves as a Monitor for all of it.

Ofc CoolerControl could do all of it,
but it's runnin from an appimage, not fully integrated, so it's on experimental mode for now..


-In Windows I just prefer to use ASUS own "AI Suite" software, or AMD's Adrenalin for the GPU..
