    BAZILLE, the modular monster.

After ACE, the second spawn of our ongoing 'Berlin Modular' project,
this one is a very different, much larger beast...

    Key features:
    • hybrid modular system: digital oscillators, analogue filters - amazing SFX capabilities
    • 4 oscillators with simultaneous FM, PD (phase distortion) and FR (fractal resonance)
    • 4 multimode analogue type filters, 2 of which have 6 parallel outputs
    • 2 modulation maps, lag processors, quantizer, inverters, rectifiers, sample&hold
    • morphing sequencer: 8 slots of 16 steps each (splittable into 4, 8 or 12-step units)
    • u-he's exemplary customer support, all regular (.x) updates are free of charge

Those in the know have been waiting for this since 2009. Read Urs' own story here:

    Berlin Modular

About four years ago I started to work on a new synthesizer. The idea was to build a virtual modular system much like the first modular system I ever used in 1986 – an old and hilariously out of tune Roland System 100M. I totally loved that thing. It stood in a room in my grammar school, and I spent hours and hours patching it up.

Over the last couple of years I built a little modular synth based on Doepfer‘s Eurorack modules. It has become a nice and inspiring hobby, but it‘s also quite expensive and for me (as a software user) really difficult to work with. I‘m used to being able to save patches, I‘m used to having multiple instances of my synth, and I‘m used to play chords. All these things are simply non-existant in an analogue modular system. On the other hand you have that tactile thing with the hands-on experience. Plugging cables, turning real knobs and all that is very rewarding compared to just pushing a mouse.

Nevertheless, I have always kept the idea of a software modular system in the back of my mind. Recently some other ideas somehow nicely aligned with that concept, and the Berlin Modular project experienced a massive boost in pace!

Of course the name "Berlin Modular" is meant to be reminiscent of the Berlin School of electronic music, and expecially of the bands and artists I listened to when I was a teenager. Those guys e.g. Tangerine Dream and Jean-Michel Jarre inspired me to make electronic music my hobby, and in the end they also inspired me to develop synthesizers. So what could be more obvious than dedicating a synth to their style?

The idea is easily explained: Imagine you have a modular system in a rackmount enclosure with a couple of oscillators, a couple of filters and envelopes. Now imagine you have three or four of these systems with different types of modules. That‘s the basic concept: Similar systems based on different modules. They are already nicely put together and ready to make some noise!

A while ago I demonstrated a prototype of the first system within Berlin Modular. I call it "Bazille", which is German for bacterium. It has become quite a crazy fellow! Bazille combines 4-oscillator FM-Synthesis and Phase Distortion with the depth and flexibility of modular patching...

So here's a demonstration of the first prototype of the first member of Berlin Modular:

Looking forward to this one, love modulars. Anyone who watched my Angelspit Blipvert videos will remember that they were using some Doepfer hardware.

    hello, friends,

    http://uhedownloads.heckmannaudiogmb.netdna-cdn.com/latestbuilds/bazille2333mac.zip

keep in mind, these are beta (pre-public beta, actually) versions, there could (certainly will) be still (loads of) bugs...

toy. Makes sproximately as much sense as the new Moog Emerson Modular does. Toy to toying with. Or just to have it in the rack.

'twas one really lightning fast response, stemming, most certainly, from the fastest, steepest, learning curve, experienced by one being in this universe (SPROXIMATELY, of course, only)...

wish us much, much, more loads of such toys to have them in our fullest racks, overflowing with the usual best of the best...

Awesome! I've been looking forward to this (along with ACE XL and L.U.S.H). Have been using the demo for a long time.

Ok, now we talking seriously. The GUI posted by Cat in OP was so ugly. No doubt it wasn't the final one, u-he is quite good at gui design.

This thing seems really good, and this means I'm gonna lose days playing with it to discover all the tricks
to get the most from such a complete modular system. New toy is in town :break:

    :mates: :lmao:

    lowpass,
just a FYI, this is how a tool built for sound synthesis looks like.
For example, a tool you surely love like Nexus to name one, is the furthest thing from a synth present on the planet.
Surely you won't find your average EDM out-of-the-box-top-chart-ground-breaking-etc. preset here,
but that doesn't mean its a toy. Actually is the very opposite.

well i wonder. Wonder of you being pissed. This is just my opinion. No more, no less. And to be clear: ACE sucks, Diva sucks, U-HE sucks. I am not interested in the opinion of Hans Zimmer, Hans Zimmer sucks too. That guy (a companion of me like Urs Heckmann, btw) has the biggest shitload of synthesizers ever in his LA Studio and every sound he ever created was the fart of a rabbit in the wind. Any diligent teen can do the same with no budget within one hour. But yeah, Hans Zimmer promotes U-He so U-He must be good. Man, pick a simple chord progression, put your amazing Diva in the strip and step through the presets. If your computer is able to manage that generally, you will be disillusioned. But above all, keep in mind..........This is just my opinion. So Peace, Sir

LUSH is pristine. I've never heard anything sounding good like that baby. To be honest, i never use it because of its CPU hungryness but LuSH 101 is excused.Firtst touch -----> Creeps. I generally am in love with D16 Group. Toraverb, Decimort etc.
