Hi! I posted here a couple of years ago requesting help to find a sample, and everyone was super helpful! I ended up finding it through another source, but I thought I’d post here again as I’m trying to find another sample/synth :)

Masafumi Takada composed this song called Welcome to Despair for the 2010 game Danganronpa, and I was wondering if anyone can recognise any of these pad sounds? Specifically, the gated pad that starts at around 0:07, the howling chrorus-y synths that start at 0:28 and the gated zaps that also play throughout.

I’ve gone through a large selection of synths to try and find this, mainly software vsts. Ranging from NI massive, fm8, reaktor, kontakt factory, virus TI, Kore 2, Omnisphere (probably not gone through all of that) and lots lots more probably. Anything at all would definitely help with this. I know some synths definitely have a sonic identity to them, so (in a perfect world) I’m really hoping someone can recognise and go ‘oh yeah, it sounds like x vst/library’ :)

Some specifics about the track and composer; the game came out in 2010, although this song sounds a lot older/dated comparatively to the rest of the songs on the soundtrack. The composer tends to use presets in a lot of their tracks, which still leads me to believe this comes from a pretty commercial library for the time of its release. I’m fairly sure he used some sort of hardware synth on this ost (considering he used Kore 2 and virus ti ) so there’s a chance it could be from a hardware synth too. Or the complete opposite, maybe a sample pack somehow :)

On my last past someone asked me why I don’t just learn and recreate it myself; recreating stuff is actually really fun! I just wanna track down the exact source as I’m part of a discord group that hunts down samples used by composers, mainly for fun, but also for aiding in song recreations or for making remix content. It’s really fun but also just satisfying to see how the composer went about adapting something like a preset to fit within their arrangement.

    thank you for your time!

He may have made these songs using various synths, like the bell at the beginning of the track could be from a DX7, or FM8. But that does not mean he did. You mention he has a Virus TI, and a Virus is capable of making every sound in this piece. Maybe some separate FX would be needed to get the vibe and color closer for each sound, if you were shooting for some perfect recreation of what he has in the piece. It has the feature set available to do any of them, given enough tweaking.

By 2010, there were already many commercially available sound sets for the Virus TI he could have used. Since the free DSP56300 Virus/Virus TI emulators called Osirus and OsTIrus have arrived, many more of those sound sets have been shared online. There are literally thousands of patches which can be downloaded. You can find both of the emulators here, but I would suggest using OsTIrus: https://dsp56300.wordpress.com/category/downloads/

The firmware ROM you need for the emulator contains every preset which originally shipped loaded into the Virus already. If they are stock sounds tweaked, they are included in the ROM banks.

I think you need to do some preset hunting, because of course he could have used some samplers/samples; but nothing in the piece would need to have come from samples.

Hey! Thank you so much for reply :) I'll definitely look over the virus TI stuff again, there's a chance I didn't go through everything very well as the emulator made it look like there were a lot of duplicates of presets that were out of order in the listings n stuff, I'll see if I can clean it up a bit and go through again.
