it seems that we wont see the portable version anytime soon, otherwise it would have been already here.

I will anyhow wait for the first NI official update, then will go for Bob's version. New libraries/apps connected to Kontakt 8 seems to be very tasty to try

Ive been using the Danilov version since V5 but I never got the "new browser" to work. I just get "no results found". All my libraries are on a separate ssd. Win 10. This has been the same for all versions since the new browser was released. Can anybody tell me what I am doing wrong?

Been using bobdule's versions from K6-K8 and it just works with no fuss.

From reading the release threads, I see a lot of the issues are from people installing various releases of Kontakt at different times expecting that they will always play nice together. They don't.

I would advise bob dule every time. It's much more hassle free and bobs active so he'll help you if you need him

In Kontakt Portable\UserData\NI Resources\Image you need to create a folder with the name of the library, for example, 8Dio Century Strings. Inside that folder there needs to be a .meta file (a plain text xml) with the same name as the library (and the previous folder). And inside that .meta file you need to make a <name> tag with the same name. And also a MST_artwork.png file, which will be the thumbnail that will be displayed in the new browser. Use as a reference any library already existing in the Kontakt Portable\UserData\NI Resources\Image folder, or in the normal installable kontakt location, which is in Public\Documents

I rather use Kontakt Portable of vkDanilov, because it's very simple and doesn't have any limitations, and besides, I can't wait to see Kontakt 8 Portable Version for all of us.

Probably portable, but even 7 was a bloated package, 8 looks even worse. I'm with arctic, 5 still rocks, but new libraries don't work with it.

I'm still using v6.8 on my older Mac. You can still use many more than you can't because of version numbers. But what just gets very old, is knowing the only reason they won't work is because of NI constantly updating version numbers just to "protect" libraries. There are some exceptions, but most do not even rely on new features in those updates. It's like some kind of protection racket, but it doesn't even work.

3 - if it's like all the other versions of kontat from 5 to 7, at least in Reaper, no. it's not backwards compatible. you open a project with a different version of kontakt and it will not open at all, much like izotope's most plugins. which is a bitch because if you've been in the game long enough and sometimes have to open an older project for a client, you'll have to have all them versions installed. othewise it will not open at all. come to think of it Arturia is also like that. Piano V version 3 for instance, will not open a version 1...

how are you calling it backwards compatible if you do have to swap 7 for 8 and confugiring library loaded and parameters? that's not what backwards compatible means. backwards compatible would be you loading a project made with kontat 5,6 or 7 and kontakt 8 would open and load that library with parameters exactly as it were and life would go on. but what you're describing is indeed not being backwards compatible. fact of the matter is that when you only have 8 and try to open a project made with another you're dead in the water. imagine you indeed had 7 or 6 kontatkt loaded with 5 instruments and did not exactly name the tracks as the instruments or god forbid changed parameters etc when your client was with you mixing the track and he LOVED the sound you guys got going there that you spent hours achieving. Now he comes back to finish the mix after recording vocals a couple of months later because he was on tour and as you open the track with him there, you're going to have to replace 7 with 8 and build whatever sounds you guys created from scratch because if the version installed was older than what you got, it will not even load the vst. it stays in the offlline state meaning that you can't even see parameters so that you could copy them to the newer. So ...unless he owes you money or favours or you're working for free, the client will not be a happy camper and you will not be a happy mixer and will have to redownload that said version and install it and go through the process of activating every single version.

Yup, I remember the version number embedded in nki was just a software way of convincing you to upgrade.
There was one particular version of Kontakt 5 that opened also nkis and nkms saved with newer version, think it was 5.1.0

I re-save since ages kontakt libraries-multi in my own instrument, so I can recall it from new version and it has already the MIDI CCs mappings, which is the most important thing for me. I dont modify nothing, just add my midi cc and re-save without samples. It works until you make a big change to your system.

I normally use Portable when there is one and currently I am for v5 and v6. Using Bobdule v7 and having issues with Bobdule v8, firstly the Kontakt_Button was missing and now theres like 12 Libraries there which were already there without Adding Libraries and it does not seem to save them after using the Kontakt_Button even though it found 91+ Libraries and they're all there in the Lib Organizer to sort but never show up in the Kontakt 8 GUI
Edit: I had to run Kontakt 8 v8.0.1 (Standalone) bobdule as Admin for Libraries to show up not only as images (new style) but in Classic View also and blocked with Firewall from connecting to the internet

Oops, terrible wording by me. I should have clarified/worded that part way better... it is backwards compatible with any of your old libraries is what I meant. Of course you are right in what you are saying, however.

As for the plugin parameters needing changing, there are DAWs that will keep the parameters and selected library intact (looks like it's just Cubase, Nuendo, and Logic Pro that do this though) - i.e. auto-migration. This part will be pretty messy for users of other DAWs though if they don't keep the older Kontakts installed.

I have many projects that use Kontakt 6.x.

If I upgrade to v8, will it mess with these projects?

In library view mode, you see third party instruments only by brand. Is there a way to make them visible also when browsing by "Sound Type" or "Character" ?

Tried to edit them with Komplete Kontrol (v3.3.3) with no luck
