Tell me what you want, but NOW i'm listening to my DT770 250ohm plugged on 2i2 FIRST gen (the weakest one...).
And volume knob is at ONE QUARTER.
Maximum (for weak signal) : one half, never more.

So YES, if you cant drive DT770 250ohm loud enough ... you are DEAF.

okay I think I'll get the 80ohm , my laptop has average 2W average audio output.

Yes it is, but not in headphones.
A DC signal has electrons flowing one way. When it throws electrons to an object, the latter will resist the flow. We measure the "opposition" in Ohms(Ω) hence the name, (electrical) Resistance.
But headphones use AC and this has electrons change direction periodically. This is why we call it impedance and not resistance. The more high impedance a device like a headphone pair has, the more it will impede the movement of electrons.
    Cheers

I was giving an easy way to explain this stuff to people who do not know it. I do not need an explanation of Ohms law, turns ratio calculations, inductive reactance, or any of this other boring electronics for audio stuff that were first year prerequisites. 250 is above the ratings of many pro audio interfaces individual headphones outs and you need an amp to use them. It's not all that difficult. It's why I mentioned that a little mp3 player is not going to drive the 990s correctly, without caring to type a full page post just to be combatative with someone I already have on ignore.

Hey, it's np. You shouldn't get upset hehe. You should excuse me if the answer sounded somehow agressive. I tend to have a condescending tone sometimes. I wasn't correcting you per se. I understand you know your stuff. But as much as you and certainly me, want to answer the easiest way possible, i do believe we also have to say things with their name as they are or else we 're prone to misunderstandings of the written speech. It is an audio focused forum after all. Plus we have people like the OP who, by posting the question it's obvious he/she didn't know what to decide, as all three DT 770s on spec paper seem identical minus their impedance.
We probably don't know each other, i have been away for a long time and came back to pay my respect when i learned Oly was gone and decided to give it one more go. Seems to me you came in when i was on the out. But anyway, i send you my best and i hope you lighten up.
    Cheers

You are trolling all the way matey. The 250Ω version needs about 63mW to play properly. Your 1st gen Scarlett can output about 22mW on its hp jack. But hey perhaps you are listening to dead flat square waves all day and night with no dynamic range hahaha.
    Cheers... Scrillex
PS: Irrelevant but i tried to watch some guy supposedly giving pro tips about mastering and compression and he started by saying something like " let's limit/clip this stereo track to -6db because dynamic range is overrated and if you think it's not, i got news for you pops, it's 2024." I immediately shut down the fucker. There should be audio police to eliminate those morons.

I use 80ohm dt770's and 250ohm 990's off a 4th gen scarlett 2i2. the difference in volume between the two is 5-6db or so, and even with -5db for EQ headroom through sonarworks, I have the headphone knob at the 10oclock position and can get the 770's too loud for comfort at that level. granted, the 4th gen 2i2 actually colors headphones below 80ohms or so, iirc I saw that from a breakdown by julian krause. actually I think I can find it

so it could be that they have a more powerful headphone amp now. idk, from my rokit's, to my yamaha hs8's, to my hd600's, 560's etc etc everything seems to get plenty of volume from a crappy behringer amp, or whatever really, and never needs to get pushed anywhere near even half volume. guess people need something to worry about :dunno:

lower impedance is easier to drive, 32-35 ohm is standard for phones/tablets/laptops,
higher impedance may yield wider dynamic range and volume but who cares
