"PastToFutureReverbs LaiVRY Gold AD122 96 MKIII DA Converters Plugin Extension for Proteus and NAM! (AU, VST3, AAX)" from sister site. Wtf does it do? I can barely make any sense of it even after reading the description. Apparently some kind of poor mans Nebula but you use Neural Amp Modeler instead and load it in and it is supposed to give you the sound of converters? Is that a thing now?

Yeah, seems so. A converter that should by definition be 100% transparent (input = output) have no sound, comes now, thanks to the geniuses in marketing, with an "even better" sound. So the better converters are not transparent? I am confused. Better is: F' this idiots, ignore them, ridicule them. Some f' around with couches, some f' around with audiophools who fall for every buzzword ridden idiocy.

Hey my dudes, using this PastToFutureReverbs LaiVRY Gold AD122 96 MKIII DA Converters Plugin Extension for Proteus and NAM is the same as putting on rose colored glasses...the sound doesn't actually change, but you feel much better about it!

the real unit is valued as a high end clipper. It's the "inspiration" for the Schwabe Gold Clip plugin. What it does loaded into Proteus, idk either. :)

that's not even them at their worst, they've done all sorts of nonsensical impulses. how are impulses of monitors supposed to work?!

next will be some cables I bet

some of their captures are actually really good. I havent tried this one, but i would imagine it imparts some clipping when driven.

This tech is relatively new, and is rapidly improving. Its only a matter of time before we see full plugins of this nature. I welcome it. The analogxai stuff is another. some of theirs are awesome.

All hardware of this nature is *supposed* to be transparent, but none of it *really* is because it can all be over driven or pushed to extremes in some regard whereafter it ceases to be transparent, as Clone pointed out, it has a clipper in it, therefore you should be able to overdrive or otherwise overload it until the clipper basically becomes a saturator or similar thing (the description says it isolated the saturation).

Trident consoles and SSL consoles are both *supposed* to be transparent, yet both companies have extracted the saturation from vintage consoles and released plugins with just the isolated effect.

Yes, this device is *supposed* to be, and probably is, transparent if operated within the bounds which it is designed to operate, but they will all do something if a push them outside of that range.

Helicopters are supposed to safely carry passengers from point A to point B and do, but they also behave quite differently if flown into tornadoes. . .

But this plugin (or should I say library?) doesn't have clipping, otherwise I would totally understand it, it would be like Acustica Ash ideally.

I just can't imagine that a plugin can emulate converters authentically (mind you again - NOT CLIPPING CONVERTERS BY GOING IN HOT, I think that's easier to emulate), I think that's kinda bs - except if Tim Petherick does it :P

They can't lmao. A monitor with high resolution regarding transients/dynamics can't be emulated on a speaker that doesn't have those properties, that is just a stupid thing to do. Except if you want to deliberately color the sound like McDSP Futzbox, but I don't think they meant those libraries to be used like that plugin.

You know, if this was a patch for Q-Clone I wouldn't mind, because that would actually make sense - the nitty gritty frequency response curve of a converter and it's transformers, why not? But claiming you can emulate converter sound, bruh not even Acustica can do that

No, even the most expensive converters bring a color to the sound and mastering engineers use different converters for different tracks, but no way you can emulate that with a plugin because it's more than an EQ curve we are talking about

Yes they do sound different, isn't this common knowledge? Everyone could test them with a word clock and external preamp, or just use your brain and realize that pro studios don't all use the same converter units

i gave it a run, and it does appear to be clipping.

No no no, this way I'm getting way more mileage out of my expensive CPU as it's doing something. The more I pile these bad boys up, the most bang out of my bucks I'm getting!!! You can't tell me otherwise!

Every single time I ever see this junk released I get the same "snake oil" vibe from it. Not worth the time to even DL the shit.

In their attempt to remain relevant, plugin makers will cause many to become disenfranchised at the constant money grabs, returning to simpler setups. Or not, dunno.

It works for guitar/bass amp, tape machine which clearly have some sort of clipping, compression and saturation along the audio path, add time domain response for reverb (tape unit too), why wouldn't it for this ?

But seriously, I don't think I'd get much out of any reproduction out of high-end gear such as this, because in the end what I'm going to be hearing is still going out of my middling gear. It's not magic.

What I want are reproductions of utter shit gear for some grain in my busses. Sure, I'm doing some processing there already so it's not like it would be a priority, but I like subtle crackle and distortion there so it would be fun to do some extra IR funny business there.

Why people do this? I'm assuming it sells because it's got a fancy name tacked to it. Not calling it snake oil, but just useless.

    My two centieuro.

It is anothef form of scam for all those who still avoid to do ABX blind tests to compare before\after to test what DSP can impove your input, and what make it just simply worse (transients smearing for example.)

I also don't know WTF this company sells.
At first I thought they sold reverb IRs from the name.
But they have plugins and I think even Kontakt libraries (?)
Not exactly the more trusty vibes ever like someone has said.

As I understood they use impulses to load into neural-learning plugins like NAM. It's something aligns to IK TONE X models, but instead of constructing your own amp from the component level, they use a response from a real hardware. Essentially it's a toneshaper box, some might like it, some might not. I do, although there is no need to collect responses as they mostly sound the same and of course a response or bunch of responses isn't any adequate replacement for a real hardware.

So yeah, it's a "snake oil" products, but it's not dishonest it really does have some real snake oil in it))

Most of us understand the purpose for these, but for degrading audio quality or for "color". This one is a little different, in that the gear being profiled is supposed to be transparent to start with. It shouldn't even sum to anything additional worth mentioning, besides a few milliseconds of additional latency. This is why most "DAC" plugins like the one from TAL,etc. will usually have bit reduction, dither and truncation features, etc.
