Get it right at the source! The right performance, arrangement and a good song are 90% of the work. I think what Kenny means is that unless your songs are going to be on the radio, mixing is not as important as the song. Sure you don't want a horrible mix that has poor volume and pan balance. You also need some basic eqing so it's not super tone tilted in one direction or the other, but the need for a multi band compressor to notch out 2 db of a certain frequency is not a priority for bedroom producers.

A good mix can make a mediocre song shine. When you listen to pop hits today, what you hear are mixes, not songs. It's all about 'creating excitement' to make up for poor songwriting and solving careless arrangement decisions with advanced digital mixing techniques.

Meanwhile, many records that are historically acclaimed for their mixing quality are records in which the mixing didn't matter at all. Take Steely Dan's Aja. It's just a fucking perfectly arranged album. Even Fiver mixers would make a stellar product with that, because the material was written and performed to be neatly separated from the get-go. So much so that the engineers and technicians involved are very humble about it, and say they had no pretention to make history, used everyday (Neve) equipment and didn't do anything special at all.

Maybe that's what you hear and find worthy, which is normal for someone who is into production and not into pop music, like typical "pop music is trash, production is good", so it must be production that is working on these people, because in no way nobody is really into that music. In most cases, they don't really expect genius songwriting or clever arrangements there, just something they can connect with, be that a vibe, lyrics or whatever.

Sometimes it's just the silly thing that makes whole thing, I saw people losing their shit with the guy repeating something like "dough from the bro sack", mediocre beat and production, but whole vibe of the thing was there, those guys lost their shit on it, you just need to experience that first hand, they literally lost their shit, got pumped up, silly, retarded, craving for alcohol and cocaine at that point, yelling, speeding the car, it's like seeing people turning to monkeys in front of you.

And there you are, like yeah, it's that production trick, it's not, it's the bloody thing, it's the thing like "wet ass pussy" that sold that vibe to that people, not Serban's or whatever mixing or even that beat that much, it's the silly term they built whole thing around.

    Without mixing:-

flour, eggs, fat, sugar, salt, milk and baking soda

If mixing WAS important however, you'd have this:-

mixin is important because when the inputed material in the mixer and tape machine was outstanding you could still fuck it up if your a dumb ass...

so... please respect and learn what is music and make some really good otherwise shutup your zealot mouth

Exactly, it's production in some cases, like nailing low end on type of pop music that is heavily relying on it, it would be huge fail if you wouldn't. People just expect to hear hefty nice low end on type of beats that are inspired by EDM, trap and etc, they instinctively turn that stuff up for it, they don't really expect to hear some life altering revelations in lyrics department, but you need to nail that low end on that kind of beat.

This sounds like a quote from Steve Albini; but this guy is not Steve Albini. :trashing:

Lots of EDM, Pop, and other non-live recorded music is written, produced, or assembled all within the same DAW session/project. A lot of "mixing stage" work is done before the track is even ready for final mixing.

It's kind of funny, but usually the people who say things like this are the first ones to be fanatical about the mix. " I barely had to do anything to get this mix done. That is just how damn good I am at this!"

Like Billy Shakes said, "The song's the thing".

For me the ranking goes...the song, the performance, the capture and then the mix, however when we're talking about most electronic music I think that the mix is on the apex of the pyramid...the natural world hasn't much to do with it.

    "Mixing doesn't matter"

So play your song in a club without treating the esses and hi mids of your vocal to decapitate the listeners or without controlling 60-180 cicles of your bass and make everyone shake their internal organs and eat all the bandwidth of your song while the crowd is taking sinewave shocks from your song. And yeah, you already mix your snare and it sounds hella shitty, so doesnt mix it and it will be shittier than ever when it starts clashing with the hihats everybody will enjoy taking sand and salt in their ears.

In all fairness, dude never said you don't need to mix at all, so thrashing his existence is kind of little too much, but hey...

If we compare mixing to a book, it corresponds to the physical medium, binding, calligraphy, and the font used etc.. In this sense, the technical aspects of mixing determine how the tracks are connected, the transitions, and the overall structure of the mix, just as the appearance, font, and binding of a book define its physical form and readability. So, the mixing of music is the way the 'content' is presented and connected, much like how the physical appearance of a book does the same

Let me be clear i respect everyone here, and try to understand the point of every person on the forum, not on a clickbait video. Quite honestly i don't feel i'm trashing his existence, and i'm much likely trashing his opinion, which are different things; For me, underestimating a necessary process of a product is at the better scenario hilarious. Every process regarding a record should be taken with the due seriousness it deserves. From the sound design/recording, arrangement, estructure, mix and mastering. There's no such a thing as a ranking on the process of creating a great song. General audience wants to hear things that sounds good to their ears and they are not inside this mentioned process. Maybe for people that mix for fix, a good recording stage can save tons of time, but for people that want to print a vibe on the record instead of fixing previous errors this is a long road and it's easier to say "just sound design and arrange it good, gain stage and bum you got a mix". But for sure, people that love and study mixing wants to make the sound picture amazing within the mixing stage. You just need to know which path you're going for, and this is completly yours choice.

Dear brother, my response wasn’t stab at you really, sincerly I feel he didn’t said anything new or contreversial, put the horse behind the cart, not before, that’s what I got from from his video.

Essentially for folks who try to wear all hats, it’s solid advice, make something that is worthy of mixing, something like that, don’t try to fix things with mixing, if you don’t do that, even mixing will become much easier.

You are awesome, really, I’m sorry if my response bothered you in any way. :mates:
