Funny, I just thought about this when reviewing a recent download of V01D-2 samples. I usually just listen to sample for ideas/inspiration. I only use them for quick fun tunes, nothing serious. Back in the 90s (or early 00's) The Chemical Brothers gave the advice not to use pre-made samples, as anyone could say your creation was as a result of (the sample creators) work. So yeah, you're absolutely right. I agree.
There's this guy, Kaelin Ellis. He makes sample packs and I once read his policies...The entitlement is crazy. Found it: Furthermore, in the event that any recording embodying any Sound(s) is either intended to be subject to a synchronization license and/or exceeds One Million (1,000,000) streams across Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, Deezer, TIDAL and YouTube, then you shall be required to immediately obtain formal clearance of the Sound(s) for use in the recording as follows: (a) contact Licensor promptly to seek clearance for use of the Sound(s) on such recording(s); (b) provide for a no less than 25% share to Licensor of any advances, producer royalty and publishing, including for the avoidance of doubt, in relation to any so-called 'synch licenses'; and (c) provide Licensor with Co-Producer credit on the liner notes of any singles or albums (in any configuration), in advertisements, and wherever metadata permits. Do I not understand this correctly or is this extremely fucked up? I don't think I've seen any other sample packs with such a licensing agreement. Last edited: Aug 18, 2024
The V01D-2 samples have this line in it: "...THE LICENSEE IS EXPRESSLY PROHIBITED FROM REGISTERING THE ..NEW SONG WITH ANY CONTENT IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM (for example TuneCore or CDBaby, and any other provider of user-generated content identification services), i.e. you can normally release a track on Spotify e.g. via distrokid, but you can't register it in content id system. " or this; "....larger artist or/and well known labels, it is your responsibility to clear the samples with us...whose ONE publicly released song on any platform....has exceeded 300,000 plays during the last 6 months. It's like buying something second hand at a rummage sale/shop, then the item turns out to be an item of high value, and they want a piece of the profits after the higher value has been appreciated. NO! you sold it on you're own freewill, you received the price you asked, now piss off to wherever you come from... You sell me paint for my race car, I win the race; should your name be on the trophy? NO! also: I/They were refering to paid (non royalty free) samples as well. Last edited: Aug 18, 2024
half of the things that "sample makers" put into their documents are so people will buy them; thinking they have somehow gotten their hands on samples where there is a prospect of "winning a Grammy" and all the "millions of streams". Yes, I know better. This is a Foster thread.
What is a "foster thread"? "Troll thread" ? I am asuming it is in reference to a poster named foster911 ? Last edited: Aug 18, 2024
Rage bait. No, you are wrong, objectively. Vaughn Oliver's (aka Oliver) sample packs have been used all over professional records, both pop and more unique too. Professionalism is being able to say that someone might be better than you. So if you found something which gets you going (like a drum loop), why not work on it? Why let a potential idea slip? Because of "entitledness" and arrogance? This is that kind of music elitism which doesn't help anyone. I bet a lot of people used to think sampling wasn't music and couldn't recognise the art and creativity in it (there are some who think this to this day). Same thing happened to rap, etc. The "new thing" which is different from the "old thing" is always viewed as something stranding too far from what's accepted at the time and then gradually becomes more accepted by society. I guess it's the nature of people. Samples are just samples. Music is just music. For some it's a job, for some it's a hobby. We can all enjoy it without judging each others by some rudimentary standards. No, this is not ChatGPT (it would express itself more clearly )
Alright, I have no clue what you mean or are referring to, so sure. I am just used to people saying crazy stuff online and thinking they genuinely believe it.
I usually only use one shot sounds into my sampler, how would they know I'm using their drum sounds? To me a 909 snare sounds pretty much like any other, how could that be picked out? I understand if you use a full drum loop, that ,may be a different story..
I almost dropped my HobNob into my cup of tea, then realised you weren't actually referring to graphic designer Vaughan Oliver, the genius behind 4AD's distinctive album covers. Edit. Just Googled him only to discover he died in 2019. Bollocks. Rest easy VO. Last edited: Aug 18, 2024
lmao. i love sample related threads. they always unhinge so quickly. within 2 comments we have somebody saying the chemical brothers suck. The rest of the thread is more rage bait and post defending samples. Ill add to the fire.... If you hate samples, and think people who use them are not real musicians blah blah blah,, just wait for a few more years, when the current biggest touring artist is just somebody who is good at prompting AI. As far as the non royalty free sample packs go, yah, i dont understand it either. The terminology is extremely vague as well. When they say something like "larger indie label", or even just "major label release", but its not clearly defined. Like what if i am signed to my friends indi label, and that label's releases average anywhere from 500k streams all the way up to 5 million. I get a release with them and get 1 million streams, are they a "larger indie label"?? Using sample packs is awesome, but i only use them for inspiration, UNLESS.... the samples are chopped and screwed completely beyond recognition. Drums, FX, one shots ill use as is, but melodic content is usually a no for me.
Foster is a troll, s/he keeps appearing under a new alias every now and then with a new post declaring how music theory is everything and if we don't understand it and know every rule we can't make authentic music. An argumentative thread ensues with Foster doing their damnedest to keep it running no matter what. You'll know it when you see it. Last edited: Aug 18, 2024
I´m reading this and i remember that one of my sample packs on youtube has over 1000 downloads, i dont remember if i wrote anything in the .txt file, but i dont agree with the alegory that the sample is like a car paint and that it has nothing to do with the race. But just blatantly asking 25% and some numbers is hella crazy, specially if the sample´s role is not of some importance, even tho trap samples from cubeatz are straight up 25% or 50%.. If i was making samples with a Prophet 6, tube amps, transformers and killer clocking i would probably write some agreement because it takes me some time to fiddle to get something worthy of hearing, and i would feel stupid if later on somebody claiming it for 8$.
