Hello! Hope you’re doing well :)

I know Logic Pro has that feature…

Any other DAW with those possibilities?

"Show Automation Editor Panel" button in Piano Roll, I assigned shortcut for all of those options, it's easier to toggle them that way instead of clicking, they don't have default shortcuts AFAIK. Then you can switch between Track/Clip automation tab's.

Sincerely I never found myself editing that much automation in piano roll or clip level, so pressing "A" is the way for me, YMMV.

Oh, I thought you meant editing automation in the midi editor itself.

Reaper is my main DAW and afaik it doesn't work like that unfortunately. Unless you use some fancy third party script to do that.

I mainly use Cubase, but I'm willing to change for better performance and midi programing possibilities.

Reaper optimization is top notch. Also, It's microtonal possibilities are very interesting for me.

But when I try it... I get confused really quick. I've been producing with Cubase a few years, but when I try Reaper I feel I know nothing about music.

Don't know how good are it's midi editing features compared to Cubase

Bitwig is really good at microtonal intervals (fully MPE compatible), better than Cubase in this aspect.
About general Midi editing, you won't find anything in Reaper that you couldn't do in Cubase.

Yeah, it's next to lanes where you edit note expressions, micro pitch and etc, so part of the midi editor/piano roll. That one doesn't have default shortcut.

One that do have, which is key shortcut "A", isn't part of midi editor, it's separate automation panel, which I use mostly, that one doesn't open while you are in midi editor.

Then you got these tabs to access clip or track automation, as part of midi editor, you got those options again for automation panel too.

I've not played with it too much but the latest Ableton (12) has full tuning support for microtunings as well. I'll leave it to people who are familiar with both to compare notes.

Also yeah, you can edit the envelopes in the same editor in Ableton as MIDI notes too, makes it easier to effect just particular notes etc.

So, after testing Reaper for a few hours, I stumbled with the solution. Although not directly having the FX parameter lane, the midi link function allows you to manipulate plugin's knobs within the piano roll, even if the plugin doesn't have the midi learn function. Pretty nice!

    hello dear friend,
If you need deep and complex midi/audio programming you should really try Cubase.
You will find there a very convenient workflow to manage midi programming and audio track automation (plugins or whatever) in the same view, even for multiple tracks.

it is called EDIT IN PLACE

1 you can choose it FOR ONE MIDI TRACK and see the piano roll with notes only plus audio track automations

    .
    .

2 you can choose it even FOR MULTIPLE MIDI TRACKS to see piano roll with multiple MIDI LANES i.e. velocity, modulation or whatever PLUS multiple audio track autiomations (then you can easily copy midi msgs or audio automations beetween tracks or lanes or whatever)

in this example I opened only 2 midi lanes (velocity and modulation) and only 2 automation lanes (in and out) but you can do with dozens of lanes obv

I think that only Logic comes close, but Cubase is hard to beat about complex midi programming, you should deffo try it

In Logic, pressing the "A" key when you have the Midi Note Editor open (by already pressing "E" with a Midi track/region selected) brings up the Automation/Midi lanes at the bottom of the Editor.

My only complaint is that you have to drop Points along an automation line, like how you do with all other automation. I'd really like an option to draw freehand with the pencil tool. I do most automation lane editing directly on the arrange page anyway.
