Looking for a true bypass insert is pure insanity, since inserts are meant to be post-preamp. They're there to amplify your mic/guitar so you can sent it to external compressor/reverb/whatever at line level.

I was assuming the line level input goes direct to the AD converters.

8 years later I am looking for a preamp, for vocals mainly. Probably in the 300-400 dollar range. Any ideas?

    Maybe check out :
Black Lion Audio B12A - (API 312 family); or Warm Audio WA12; or Warm Audio TB12 (API with more options)
BLACK LION AUDIO B173 - (NEVE family)
Black Lion Audio Auteur - (clean w/ some vibe)

Personally, I'd snag a used ISA ONE. Has a swiss army knife of options.
