I'm just using free plugins. I use Isol8 from TB pro audio to extract one channel L/R from stereo to make mono. If I want to narrow the stereo field i use MSED from Voxengo. If I want to make sound wider I use MStereoExpander from MeldaProduction, Stereo Touch from Voxengo, or Wider from Polyverse it depends what best to my ears and I use Studiorack from Waves for multiband stereo widening/narrowing or combine with those 3 plugins above for fine tuning and try the best widening effect.

 

i have tried many stereo plugins, but this technique has convinced me the most in terms of sound.i use it for individual tracks of a project, or also for the master bus.

 

I find the most overlooked plugins of the ones that make things that are in stereo sound just as good in mono.

If you have two electric guitars playing the exact same part, or even two voices singing the same thing in a Harmony setting, I find these two things work the best:

ArxOne - a free plug-in that fixes the phase issues that occur between two tracks. Any true tracks of any two instruments or voices.

Trackspacer - fixes frequency collision issues between any two voices, instruments or anything else for that matter. Forces frequencies to get out of the way with respect to instruments or voices you want to dominate.

It starts with recording and mixing. Ofc (during mixing preferably) plugins like ApQualizr2, Soothe2, Trackspacer, Nugen Stereoplacer, etc will help (as well as Haas effects, stereo chorus, doubletracking and counterpanning, stereo delay, reverb, etc).

Playing with stereorizers is cool but the best trick to have a wide and solid mix is to judiciously produce by thinking hard L-R from the start.

 

Reverbs are good for that purpose too. Mixing with Mike on Youtube has a video on this called "dry reverb".
Voxengo Sound Delay is in this list because of a trick I learned from Dan Worrall, put it in M/S mode and add a little delay on one channel for a nice stereo effect.
