negli anni '80 lavoravo con il mitico Notator (Atari) con grande soddisfazione in quanto si poteva lavorare direttamente sul Pentagramma e con linguaggio Midi.
Oggi Notator non c'è più, per cui sono alla ricerca di un suo equivalente per Windows.
Tempo fa ho acquistato Cubase Professional, l'interfaccia utente era più rivolta all'audio che al Rigo musicale. Per cui l'ho regalato ad una scuola di Musica di Verona (inoltre era molto complesso).
Ho bisogno di una DAW che abbia questi requisiti:
- software con il quale posso interagire direttamente sul pentagramma?
- utilizzare modifiche di Program Change, Control Change, Sistema esclusivo, ecc.?
(Per precisione su Sistema esclusivo: posso ad esempio scrivere questa numerica che serve ad alcuni moduli della Roland passare da un Enter GS all'uscita GS con questa stringa decimale?

Notator leggeva questa stringa e la inviava via Midi al Modulo (RA90 Roland)
- Possibilità di scrivere manualmente una partitura?
- In conclusione, mi servirebbe(per quanto mi riguarda) una DAW che mi consente di lavorare sulla partitura tramite linguaggio MIDI.
Qualcuno può orientarmi?

 

Since he has already gone the Steinberg route, I would suggest Dorico. Some of these functions asked about are more on the Cubase side of things. There is not much "going back to Notator workflow".

La C-Lab fu acquistata da Apple moltissimi anni fa e Creator & Notator (che io utilizzavo con il 1040 ST Atari) diventarono Logic e poi Logic Pro.
Se puoi... facci un serio pensiero. C'è un mondo che ti aspetta!!!

Notator turned into Logic, and you can use the score editor in Logic certainly. But I would still go with Cubase/Dorico for Orchestral if you really want all the additional bells and whistles. Also, there is Sibelius which many people use.

I'm just picturing a bunch of somewhat underpowered computers with VSL and Cubase. Babylonwaves Art Director expression maps, etc.

 

1 Cubase (BUT maybe NOT PRO???)

3 a combination of Cubase and Dorico

-1 explained: Cubase can do 100% of the stuff you listed there, including any operation with midi (advanced or basic as you need). About "writing on the staff" it is a bit mechanical, but for simple things it can to the job. I mean, if you have to write an orchestral score with 30 instruments with complex indications such as f, FF, mp, crescendo, and so on then Cubase is tedious, but for simple scores it can work it out. About "midi entries" nothing to say, Cubase is literally the best DAW to manage anything about midi, the more with external modules.

-2 explained: Dorico is not a daw, but it's a professional software to write and print professional scores for publishing or for printing copies for orchestras and so on. It can manage midi in a very basic way, but it is very tedious. I'd really avoid it if you have to work with external modules, CC, midi msgs and so on.

-3 exaplained: well, nothing to add to what I wrote, Cubase for midi programming and Dorico for complex score printing

sum: I think that you had problem with a modern copy of Cubase Pro because you expected to find something like Notator, but Cubase is the Notator after 40 years of development, so you can imagine that it has a bunch of improvements lol nowadays Cubase is full of stuff so you have to study it a little bit to reach any goal

From what I understand, you are not a professional of music production or orchestral scoring, so the best solution could be a copy of Cubase but NOT PRO. If you check the Steinberg site you will find also Cubase Elements and Cubase Artists. These versions are SMALLER, light, and with less functions. I cant tell you if they got the score editor and a good midi editor because I use the PRO version, but I think that you can easily check the official site for that.

anyway I dont think you will find a better solution than something that has "Cubase" in the name

Nowdays I work very little in Score creation but many years ago I used to create a lot of professional scores and I preferred to Import from Logic into Finale

I don't know if such software still exists today but I have a beige 286 with Windows 3.11 and a 14" monochrome screen if you're interested!

 

There are fantastic ATARI emulations out there ... I was told and shown.

If I understood correctly what need, try Reaper you can add midi events there in text form
Se ho capito bene di cosa hai bisogno, prova Reaper, puoi aggiungere eventi midi lì in formato testo

 

And those Atari emulations also have built in drivers for a midi port/patch bay?

 

It is Italian. Spanish is different.

 

I have a x386 with an amber monitor, a Hercules VGA, and 20MB HD that weights a couple of kilos. No much use aside from "see this" "WOW!".

In this case I would just use my Atari Mega 4 and send MIDI over network to a PC. Notator is wonderful and the MIDI timing is impeccable.

I'm looking for somebody to inherit all my treasures since I had no time to produce any ancestors.
