    Hey AudioSx'ers

I am looking for a standalone and/or VST plugin for PC which will detect the chords from a mastered audio file and display them.

I was recommended DDMF ChordDetector so I purchased it but its not very good at all, the chords just jump all over the place and no way are they correct.... I so should have tried the trial but it was cheap enough lol.

Any advice would be super duper.

    Thanks
    Storm

Spoiler: none of these chord detector apps are reliable and some aren't even usable depending on what you need. Would be easier and less painful to just pay a professional to transcribe it for you if you're not willing to learn it by yourself.

Totally with you, DDMF was terrible but I am only looking for something which will give me an idea on the chords.

I can play anything I hear only problem with that is I dont know what I am actually playing as in the chords and sometimes I get asked :)

There was also Sonic Ladder Riffstation it a standalone & portable, it wasn't a VST program but had many features that are quite useful and was reasonably accurate. you could change the pitch, speed, isolate sounds, save a segment to repeat until you figured out the notes. It is no longer sold, Fender bought it a few years back but didn't do anything with it. The full version was distributed for free for a few years, it might be still available, there was also a portable version. It helped many of my pupils when I taught guitar for a short while. It was x32/x64 also had a mac version you will still find it if you search for it, It worked on Win 7 so should work on Win 10 also, the last version was 1.6.0.0. hope this helps

I've used Riffstation for years. It's pretty accurate.

Riffstation Pro is still available for free if you search for "giveaways Riffstation" It was at the top of the list on my browser, if any of you are interested there are both the PC & mac versions are there. I downloaded both to verify that they are still there and available, I installed the PC version " it is fully working Riffstation Pro v1.6.0.0" just follow the instructions for the PC version and check off save file to downloads folder.
David Brock mentioned " that he used it and he found it pretty accurate"

Melodyne has Polyphonic note detection. People prefer to use it for guitar parts they want to convert to Midi because of that feature.

Google's comment... The “Polyphonic” algorithms in Melodyne, thanks to DNA Direct Note Access, notes can be detected and edited within recordings even of polyphonic instruments such as the piano or guitar – including the individual notes of which chords are composed.

Thank you I will look more in to this although Melodyne will probably do a little more than I was looking for. This Riffstation fits the bill perfectly.

You're welcome. It is the one of the most powerful programs of its kind, and I do not like using it at all. It's very tedious. If you are doing lots of work with vocals; it's a required poison.

Yeah, you just gave me a chuckle, as I completely agree. love/hate with it.

I love it as it works. It seemed like a damn miracle on release (especially polyphonic version) and really changed things in so many ways...

While it has saved me ass on many occasions....

(I had once recorded a performance from an artist who was playing on a record of mine on his steinway grand at home, and his playing way way above my pay grade, and the part was performed was complicated Prokofiev level at times, but his low d and another key were slightly out, and certainly out with the the rest of the music in the track, and Melodyne had just gone polyphonic and just released, and with much doubt, I gave it a go, and damn if it didn't save the day and my ass... it was amazing.... and no discernible artifacts etc..)

But the flip side, on which you are so right, comes the hate in the form of the damn TEDIUM sometimes of vocal tuning and trying to fix someone, and the time it takes and the hours and the boredom and whatnot..... it's gonna do it more naturally if you take the time and do it right then any other tool I've used... so especially on a lead etc... (bgv's I will cheat out on with lesser but faster tools at times) ....but jeebus... sometimes the time ....

so yeah it is a required poison for some things, as just nowadays there is an expectation of it being right and done well in so many situations... and it's just not a fun way to spend ones evening or day sometimes.... sigh... and if you haven't done it in awhile and are not in that 'zone' of kinda autopilot on it etc etc.... argh...

that's one I do try and outsource if I can, but unless it's someone else's dime and they don't mind.... it's just what it is...

I haven't used it much for just chord detection much myself, there are some decent tools I would probably reach for first 'now' on that like Scaler2, or ear like Arctic said to some degree... but Melodyne, given material, would be the strongest I believe if those fail.....

At least with stem separation (whether quick and easy or more sleeves up) and whatnot getting better, it's easier to split things out if one needs... but yeah, I agree with you and Arctic.. it just depends on the material I imagine also with dense sonic tracks and different production things sometimes definitely making it hard to find the tree in the forest...

I would recommend to use a stem separation tools like RipX, Izotope RX11 or an online service to have less elements that only make it harder to hear clearly and especially Software like melodyne, song master or other note detection/midi conversion tools work way better that way.
