This is the type of guy when you sent your music to him to do what his role suppose to do, he'll then email you back saying you wrote the music wrong.

Smart enough to know these are just tools but dumb enough to be tempted by anything with a cool analog GUI.

Music doesn't get better because of using this or that EQ! And that goes for 'ALL' other tools like compressors, limiters, etc! The first rule: quality of music is determined by the composition, arrangement and the mix! And you don't need all these fancy plugins to make a good mix!
If the mix is OK you can use 'any' tool to make minor adjustments to make it 'maybe' even shine even more? If the first rule was not met? You can try hundreds of EQ's and other plugins that promises you to make all your tracks sound like pros, but you'll never ever get there!

Some VST/AU EQs are significantly more of a scam than others.

Don't believe me? Look up Streaky Colourbox EQ and his marketing of the product.

I have a small YouTube channel and actually put together a complete video going over how much of a disingenuous scam artist Streaky is, bit I never released the video because I'm afraid it may impact my ability to work with brands in the future.

The video is fairly long and I demonstrate how you can make his Colourbox EQ in less than 30 minutes using Kilohearts Snap Heap. I also go over how shady his marketing and responses to people's criticism is.

I'm not as concerned about how similar all analog modelled EQs are (some people just like different interfaces and saturation algorithms), I'm much more worries about scumbags like Streaky taking advantage of uneducated, beginner, or uniformed producers and musicians.

It doesn't help bigly - you just proved it - if one's believe system is way stronger than his intellectual abilities. :-(( Sorry, but you are blabbering BS. Obviously you didn't understand one video discussed here. And you don't know what addition (= summing) is. 1. grade in school wasn't for you? You started in audio school? Cool. And facepalm.

What am I looking for here? You mention Kilohearts, but who cares what another plugin can do? Should they stop selling Phaseplant because you can already use your Virus? Should people stop making new saturation plugins because we can just use Decapitator?

If they use the reputation built buy another brand to further their own, that is a little shady. If the product does what it is supposed to, what is the problem with the product? That someone did not do better research and find a cheaper alternative?

"Streaky" probably did not even code that plugin. Is BT a programmer? How about DJ Swivel? Jaycen Joshua? I always figured Dave Pensado for a programmer, look at all the plugins his presets are in. Do you mean to imply Tom Brady doesn't make sandwiches at Subway?

There is all kinds of shadiness out there. So I wonder why you single out one guy? Of course I don't. It's a way to wedge your youtube channel and garner attention for nothing.

You’ve just proved my point. I have a PhD in audio, not a YouTube education, and I also run a recording studio.

He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Yes some plugins are scams but not all and his “science/evidence” is selective and flawed for views and likes.

With regard to summing, you do not send ready mixed stems out to analogue summing, you mix through the system from the start. All professionals are aware of this.

Pushing levels to saturate as you mix - adding the analogue saturation, and crosstalk from the system. but I suppose you don’t use any analogue modelled plugins to achieve that. And it’s all a scam.

it’s easy to make something you don’t comprehend a conspiracy isn’t it.

totally agree!!! but u know that the analog hardware have electriicty+transformers, so the EQ there makes a difference, but in the digital realm... i doubt it... cant found a very GOOD difference... the last ones i used a lot are from RedRockSound, very good quality there! but still.. How can you emulate a transformer that will deteriorate over time? thats the thing i cant trust in these "analog modeled digitals eqs"

creating new filter algos, decramping is just hard maths. So i have nothing against the industry selling you the same filter algos in a new package.

i am fine with my EQ8, which was improved by Cytomic as commission from Ableton.

and if i want to go fancy, FF Q1 - the old version from 2013, it works great.

also DSP and audio coding is just hard:

What are you looking for here?

Streaky's Colourbox EQ and its marketing materials. Exactly what I said. Seems like you haven't looked it up.

Do you actually believe that I think Streaky coded the plugin himself?

Man you're smart. Much smarter than me.

I'd actually give him credit if it put the effort into coding something himself (even if it's just a 3 band EQ with fixed freq response and no saturation which it claims to have, selling for about $90 USD)

The product doesn't do what it claims to do. White Sea Studio even demonstrated that in a video. The product especially doesn't do what it's supposed to do based on the claims Streaky made in his marketing.

I shouldn't have posted my YouTube channel link here on this post just for attention tho. My bad, you're right.

Oh wait, I didn't do that.

I singled out this one guy because this is a thread related to EQ plugins and whether or not they are scams, so I posted a scammy EQ plugin from a shady guy. Hope that makes sense.

You should try doing some research before randomly ranting and putting words in other people's mouths.

Considering how often I see you ranting incoherently on this platform, maybe that's just your hobby.

This is ALL you needed to say. Back on ignore. Or I am sure I would complain about your "incoherent rambling" more frequently. I'm sure some things I type are sometimes difficult for your perhaps limited vocabulary. You just said Nothing. You learn about audio on Youtube.

You probably worry about all the noobs "Streaky" makes money from, because you bought his plugin. :)

Your reasons to even talk about someone like this when they aren't even here, is probably even worse then this. Did he break your heart when he asked who you were. when you emailed begging for an NFR?

    What @clone said.
Apart from that, I think this guy is really funny. /s

I saw the follow-up video. This one:

    Here are some notes:
Human hearing perception has a dynamic range of about 140dB. If we subtract masking ambient noise and the range above the pain threshold, we are left with about 100dB. So if the delta of a null test is equal to or quieter than -100dBFS, we can speak of an almost perfect null. With regard to music mixes, we can speak of a significant null at -60dBFS or lower due to masking effects. In this example, I assume that both signals to be compared have a level of 0dBFS. BUT:

Let's have a look at his test setup.
    • The test signal is a -12dBFS white noise.
    • He applies a +6dB boost to the plugins.
    • The meters are calibrated to cover a range between 0dBFS and -24dBFS.
This guy seems to assume that a delta greater than 18dB is a significant null. :deep_facepalm:

And even if we disregard the visible measurement results on the level meters...
I could clearly hear the delta in every single comparison... on my smartphone... on the built-in speakers... so even without headphones. :deep_facepalm:

But hey, let's make a video about "scammy" plugin manufacturers and in this video I sell a course teaching you how to use a plugin "properly". In this course I'll show you some "esoteric stuff" you've never heard of, like IMD and pre-emphasis. :deep_facepalm:

Everything this guy says is 100% science. /s

Science is dead. Long live science.

Ooooh my goodness me. These Axe ads were so repulsive... even as a young guy (target audience) I was like "I feel my intelligence is insulted".

I mean, we do think with the dick often, but NOT THAT MUCH. For chrissake it's a fucking deodorant, not an aphrodisiac stupid motherfuckers...

I really enjoyed his video series, and if you skip the author's assumptions and just listen to the results, these videos actually prove that all plugins sound different. However, this difference is probably not even worth $5.

Youtube channels run by 'experts' are often just as scammy as the things they review, they aren't really trying to convince you of anything other than watching their videos. They're monetising your eyeballs.

I trust musician-consensus in forums more than any youtube influencer.
