Wow, they really went overboard on the power usage on the 7950x. Definitely should be run in eco mode (-38% power usage for -5% performance).

If you do some tweaking in PBO with a negative offset, you can most likely get that drop in power draw with near or at-zero drops in performance. It's honestly kinda insane how much tweaking headroom these chips have.

So which one to choose? 7900X or 7950X? Money is not really a consideration, as the crazy inflation is going to eat it all up whether I spend it or not, so best to have something tangible to show for all of my hard work.

The 7950X seems to be better value per core, and it would be nice to have the extra processing power in reserve, but mostly I would be running the CPU in optimised or eco mode unless more processing power is required, (for example, I run a lot of Nebula instances during mixdown).

If I were in your shoes, namely price is not a problem, I'd also go for the 7950X. The difference vs the 7900x is remarkable. And from what I've seen it can sustain very heavy workloads with all cores quite close to the max with a "real world" cooling. And rendering... man... that must be an orgy with that bad boy

Also, that ECO mode is a great touch from AMD. You still have insane power when enabled but if you want go ballz to the wall cowboy mode you have that extra power just with a switch.
I've also heard that those new Ryzens automatically optimize at least the RAM settings with the first boots, rebooting a few times until they find their sweet spot. That's also a nice touch.

The price is a problem! What else is there to do when the current inflation situation is going to eat up all our money anyway? So may as well have something to show for it, and maybe I can even sell it for double the price in a years time.
    :invision: :hahaha:

Yes, the rendering is good with 7950X, and I want to try it with 100 instances of Nebula. Let's see who is the boss in this game

I'm no expert but if multi-core performance is better used in mix-down/rendering it should wipe the floor with any existing CPU.
Damn, I'd buy tickets and popcorn to see that

Some more details with regards to mobile CPUs and APUs from AMD:

There will be one tier above the 7845HX: The 7945HX features 16 cores (4 more than the 7845HX) and 32 threads with a maximum clock of 5.4GHz (+200 MHz over the 7845HX).

    For comparison, multi core:

    AMD Ryzen 9 7900 @ 48,477
    Intel Core i7-13700K @ 47,030
    AMD Ryzen 9 7845HX @ 46,791
    Intel Core i9-12900HX @ 35,730
    Apple M2 Max @ 26,429

    Single core:

    Apple M2 Pro @ 4,228
    Apple M2 Max @ 4,163
    AMD Ryzen 5 7600 @ 4,020
    Apple M2 @ 4,011
    AMD Ryzen 9 7845HX @ 4,003
    Intel Core i9-12900HX @ 3,986
    Intel Core i5-13500 @ 3,955

Phoenix1 mobile APU with Radeon 780M:

Close to nVidia 2050 mobile levels of performance apparently.

    Phoenix2 APUs:

Hybrid design like ARM's bigLITTLE or Intel's performance/efficiency cores. Two full speed Zen4 cores and four efficiency Zen4c cores. Roughly half the transistors for 25% less performance, same feature set as the big Zen4 cores. (Intel killed off AVX-512 for newer chips because they couldn't find the room for AVX-512 on the efficiency cores.)

I would probably consider 9900X (jumping from 6 cores 5820K to these 12 cores) but I absolutely need enough PCIe lanes for a gpu, at least two NVME SSDs, and PCIe audio interface = 28 lanes

Just noticed I bumped the CES 2022 thread instead of CES 2024

BTW, I heard that the 3D cache models will still be only 8 cores max with 3D cache.
So for the 9950X 3D only 8 cores with 3D cache and 8 regular cores.

Although the global boost in overall performance falls short of the expectations/rumors, the reduction in power usage is remarkable.
Maybe they almost managed to fit the 3D cache in all 12, 16 cores but finally couldn't pull it off by a hair.

I'm hoping the Ryzen AI 370 will find its way into cheap Chinese smaller form factor boxes. Not really into desktops anymore.

If I only had one computer it wouldn't be a desktop, but for pure power they can't be beaten when it comes to tasks that require some heavy lifting. I ended up skipping the last gen, so it's probably a good time to make a move on one of these new ones.

they really should give me one free to make up for the mess with the 7950x3d. they totally abandoned it and don`t even offer a cpu driver for it while they do for 7900x, 7900x3d and the 7950x. they are ashamed and they should be.
