That's exactly what I think will happen. They're giving you a license for less than half of the price of getting it WITHOUT the subscription. Makes no sense unless there's a catch, and I don't think that catch is the fact that the subscription is so good you'll keep it forever.

I believe they will start releasing major versions every year, just so you don't have time to unsub. Got your free license? Then now sub for the next version or get stuck with outdated software, loser. No upgrades either, only for the other losers who paid $400. That's what I think will happen. Studio One always had a 2-year update cycle until the next version, but if they're dropping it to 1 year, you're still spending less than buying a $400 license, but more if you already had one to upgrade. Once you get stuck with the non-upgradeable perpetual license from the sub, the logical choice will be to pay for the next year instead of dropping $400, and that's how they get everyone stuck with a sub that seemed too good to be true.

Sadly, the only thing we can do is to wait and see what happens, because I'm positive they won't say anything. S7 will drop this year and most likely S8 will drop next year, that's my bet.

I will stick with R2R. When I'm forced to no longer use studio one, I guess I'll try Bit Wig.

Same, they lost me when they stopped accepting Paypal as paying option for the monthly payment, hell, they even made sure it was gotten of the "rent to own" option at Splice. If this wouldn´t have been the case, I´d still use S1.

So, after a quick Intermezzo with Cubase, I went on to Reaper. Best decision I made.

These companies know and take advantage of a user's desire to...

a.) Always have the absolute latest version and updates, even if there are no discernible changes to the software. It just feels good to apply an update and to see that version number match the latest version. I have no doubt many companies are aware of this mania that users tend to have and send out random, fake updates to keep the addiction alive.

b.) Be legal. People don't like to feel left out or with the feeling their DAW is compromised, gutted, or full of viruses. They like belonging to a community of people who do things the right way. Having a cracked DAW might bring initial feelings that you're ahead of the game and saved a ton but that almost always ends up resulting in dissatisfaction with the fact your DAW is cracked, pirated, and illegal...terms that make anyone's skin crawl. I've been on the verge of paying hundreds of dollars just for the luxury of being legal. There have been times I've been fully aware that being legal would not bring me any improved functionality or perks of any kind and I still get that strong desire to pay a ton just to be legal. I've yet to spend hundreds to have a legal version of an app but I have given in to subscriptions and various licenses of a variety of apps that I use frequently and find very useful. But that's just common decency in my opinion. Anyone who gets a lot out of an app that doesn't cost a fortune but insists on avoiding giving back is sort of a douche and is not helping the app developer improve a very useful tool. Apps that don't get my cash are the ones that blatantly seek to fool you into paying a ton for cheap perks or try to lock you into lifelong subscriptions that end up costing you 10 times the amount you paid when you got that perpetual license which their greed has converted to a license only good up to a certain version number and getting any higher version requires subscription. I happily and eagerly use the cracked versions of those. =)

as long as they keep a perpetual license for major versions or .5 steps, i dont see this is wrong?
EDIT: ohh i see Pro is one time payment?

i still dont like the thought of paying for anything monthly or even yearly. rather just when i want to upgrade ...

Reaper is jsut an insane good solution.

Ableton is fine with push sales and it took them always 2-3 year to get to another major version, as you can see if check the past.

I think Push sales are going well for ableton.

IL does have their daughter companies and also the collab with novation? for the FL controller. This looks stable to me aswell.

Cockos just doesnt care about it, since the devs not really need money? but the impression is, the 60 bucks option will possibly stay and people will keep using it, when they are no longer happy with their daw.

Apple does also an ok job Logic, but its macOS only and you really an apple PC for it.

maybe users should choose the best of them in terms of price ...they always have been fair and keep going that is REAPER ...I'm not a user, I have a legit S1 but as the things progress, people's choice should be the fair one ... in the past I said and I repeat; we live in a digital domain, creating copies shouldn't be a problem, but when I see such master subscripcockery; they are stealing not selling a product; I know, no one forces one to buy, and that's why I raise the voice, Presonus does not deserve any from you, especially those that are hobbyist... pro's maybe can handle the subscription=stealing ...

i've downloaded Cakewalk last week, saw it has an alignment and lip syncing tool like vocalign, that was what made me do it. Plus ARA. haven't tried it yet though.

About ableton, yeah is not really anually, i just feel like it was yesterday they were launching ableton 11, now we have ableton 12 already; it goes so fastt. I started producing in ableton 8 lite, came with my scarlett, i didn't even know what ableton was but it had a cd key so i installed it.

19 bucks more expensive, 399,99 for retail Studio One, 149,99 for update, 179,99 for whatever they are introducing now. If they start making sense for people to be on yearly updates, they will pump versions faster than FL, so it will be 149,99 every year to be on latest. And there's 19,99 a month without owning it at any point.

ohh Ableton has pitch correction now as a device and its quite usable.

I knew Ableton since version 3.0.4, a beat release, which a friend gave me, but i couldnt figure out how to unlock it from BEATs NFO, so i never touched it again, until a friend i found online was using it and it had freeze, which FL didnt have, i know it had bounce, but it was to complicated, so i moved to Live with version 8.0.1 and started really learning it, reading manual, watching tutorials and doing a lot of projects in it in the first years.

Price for every Live version is just crazy ... but i feel great with it.

Yeah ableton bundling the Lite versions with audio gear is just a very good step to get people to start using your DAW.

I tried to many other daws in the beginning of faster internet, but FL was a long time my way.

I still have to check if Sonar has this Notator view, Logic has, it would be very good to write with it.
Wondering if ToonTrack Piano thingy has a notation view instead of a Piano roll, this would make it a lot of easier to write it inside Ableton, instead of using Sonar ...

I dont think subs for audio software is the future alone. There has to be a way that you can stop doing these subs monthly and still keep atleast after a certain amount of months a permanent license - like the rent to own model. Something like an reward - afterall sure subs are good if you are a casual producer -- just like a casual gamer, but if you really want to use it perma, without anything complicated, then having a perma license is just a good idea.

Yeah....HELLS NO. Longtime Studio One OWNER. Longtime Cubase/Nuendo OWNER.
I don't do subsubscriptions. I don't do dongles. I don't do ANYTHING that requires me
to be constantly online in order to work. YMMV.
