    Hi all!
I decided to upgrade my PC from Win 8 to Win 10.
Does the Windows registry retain information when switching between operating systems?
I am mostly interested about Kontakt and Library Tab information... I have a few hundred libraries and I am terrified of having to reinstall them all from scratch...
    Thank you for any suggestions!

The Windows setup lets you pick between clean slate and keeping your old files and settings. Of course, there's no 100% guarantee. Consider making a backup. Ideally of your drive. If that's not an option, backup the Kontakt registry keys with 'regedit' or something that's more sophisticated.

I regularly backup my registry keys... but can I import Win8 keys into the Win10 registry?

Personally? I kept my Win7 setup as there are so many plugins that will not work with win 10/11 and just took an old computer box and built it with newer components for win 10.
I will not part with the win 7 machine as it's taken far too long to get it setup just the way I want it.

My advice? If there is any way you can keep both, I'd say do that!

I'm really very undecided about abandoning WIN8... like you I've reached an optimal configuration and everything works perfectly...

win10 is very mature now but, if everything is working 100% for you and you love the system, why change it? security concerns?

The only reason is that some plugins, and the latest version of Kontakt, only work from Win10 onwards... but, of course, the ton of other Vst, Vsti, libraries, etc., that are available for Win8 are enough to make new music for at least another 30 years...

It is supposed to if you attempt the "upgrade". However I never recommend doing upgrades of ms operating systems as they can be problematic and end up leaving you with no other option except to flatten and rebuild. If you're game to upgrading, then most certainly do a complete backup image of YOUR ENTIRE SYSTEM before attempting the upgrade. That way you have a safety base to go back to in case the upgrade bombs somehow. Use acronis or easeus for making those disc images to be used to get your entire WIN8 system back online within the hour in case of a hiccup.

I do get the wish to keep up to date with everything as it becomes available I really do, and over time both yours and my operating systems we use will be completely outdated, BUT if we use the hardware of the 70's and 80's as an example, how many people clamber and crave those old sounds now? Besides all that work that went in to making preset banks for these VST, all gone!

After talking with a computer technician, who told me that it is no longer possible to upgrade Win 8 to Win 10, and therefore everything must be formatted and start from scratch, I made my decision: I will keep my "old" system as it is, because it works perfectly...
When my wonderful PC dies a natural death, I will spend a few weeks of my life to rebuild the system from scratch. But for now... don't change a winning team! (I hope the translation gives the idea of this saying...)

at this point, I'd skip 10 and go for 11 eventually (IF your hardware can handle it), Windows 10 support ends in the end of next year so all software devs will (have to) jump ship too next year

Hey Buddy., all good here.. hopefully you too.

    I had trouble with:-

    Red Dragon 2
    Sonivox Telecaster
    and the URS Bundle

At the time I was considering updating the whole shebang, there were a lot of people complaining about other plugins that wouldn't work.. I don't know of any other telecaster for example without using Kontakt, so I never bothered..

Red Dragon 2 working on Windows 11. FL Studio good for old plugins. you can use FL Studio as a plugin in other daws https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-online-manual/html/flstudio_vst_plugin.htm

Upgrade to Windows 11. run Chris Titus Tech's Windows Utility and you good to go https://github.com/ChrisTitusTech/winutil

I have been really fine thank you mate.
Aaah the infamous URS bundle from 2010 hehehe. Just checked with AiR repack of v.1.0, works with JBridge just fine. Just 4.7 mb installer, that's how plugs should be made really.
Sonitus Tele i haven't tried nor have it anywhere but listening to a few demos i found, i'm pretty sure the Ample Sound TC beats it by a long shot. Mind you though it is sampled based but very cool to use and intuitive. Can get very realistic when programmed well. Especially with amp effects on.
Red Dragon 2 worked with JBridge again but personally i find it a bit bland by today's higher quality standards since it was made with an early version of SynthEdit. But hey whatever suits you is fine by me bro.
Bottom line for DAWs who don't have a tool to load 32bit plugs use JBridge. It's a nifty little tool i use all the time since half my clients want Darbuka/Latigo in their vsts hahaha.
Anything else you might want me to check i'm here :winker:
    All the best

If you're into playing around with a newer OS why not just get a used machine (maybe a couple of hundred $'s at most) that fits the bill hardware wise, and use it as a test bed? That way you can ease yourself and your workflow into the new system gradually.

Also, I would advise against running the "upgrades" to mickeysoft operating systems. I learned a long time ago that doing a complete backup image of your entire current win8 system first, and then flattening the drives/storage devices and installing the new OS on a clean system is the best way to ensure trouble free operation down the road.

I went to from winXP to Win7 to win10 on production machines in the above manner and it has served me well throughout every OS changeover. Also, IMO, win11 is not a great choice for production hardware unless you're installing a nice optimized version like Ghost Spectre or something that has all the resource hogging junk already carved out of it.

Following the mainstream herd that is always hyping the next best thing "that you must have" is a money pit that never dies and will keep you broke and constantly on the edge of FOMO. Whenever the industry says "you must do this or else" I pull out the stiff middle finger to all of it. I have been running win7 since it's inception and still have internet machines running it with ZERO issues at all.

If you build a new system get a good one that will be a contender for at least 10+ years. Once you get that new system installed and tweaked keep it regularly backup-imaged and you won't ever be worrying about downtime. Instead, you'll be concentrating on your production projects.

Win10 will be around and valid for years to come. Even if mickeysoft tells you they don't support it, it really doesn't matter much because no one I know ever uses their shitty support anyway. As far as patches/updates go, they are obligated to fix major security/operational issues regardless of their "support end" deadlines.

Wow, switching from Windows 8 to 10, when Windows 10 support ends this year.

Win 11 is better, from every aspect you can consider. Install a Windows 11 Lite (from famous makers) and you'd see you have missed a lot.

I forgot Win 8 was even a thing. Must be a selective omission to protect myself from a traumatic experience.
